TBE NEW COUNCIL'S COMMITTEES.
Are Tby te be Determined by the Vete nn tbe
Light QaetUen, Te-Nlgbt ?
Te the Editor of the IitTiLtleictR.
It Is reported in some section that the ap
pointment of the committees In the organiza
tion of the New Councils will, se far as the
Common Council 1 concerned, be governed by
the Common Ilranch en the light question i
that ll, that members voting Ter the EdUen
light are te be slaughtered, put en unimportant
committees. I can hardly think this of the
canons candidate for Chairman of Common
Council, because I have always known him as a
fair man, even in warfare : but there are these
who believe It. Mould uch a thing occur, the
men who vote a geed light and a saving et many
thousand of dollars te the city by voting for the
Edisen proposal can better afford te be se
snubbed than ran any authority afford te
nub them. Men voting at the dictate of
cenaclence, knowing that they are serving
tbe best Interests of the pubile by voting
for that which Is net only the ehtaptit, but
TUB but 1I0UT, as Is unquestionably the
rase with the Kdlsen light, can afford te take
buck seats en council committees, for they will
bee'evatedln the esteem of tbe taxpayers tea
hlghcrplane than cun come from any appoint
ment In the gtlt of a chairman of ceunclK
Citizens w IU await developments In the organi
zation of the Common branch of the new City
Councils with net a little Interest, as the vete
en the light question will be published In fall,
and, from that record, the standing of the KOI
son men en the committee may be asceitalmd
I cannot believe that such a pregramme as that
which I have Indicated will be carried out ; but,
come what may, the duty et the ceuncllincn Is
plain, te my eyes, as well as te the view el nearly
every taxpayer I hve consulted with and that
is te vote lorthefeiretl and bttt bill, according
te the tetms of the Invitation for proposals.
That bid tus lowest ake best Is the hJlsen,
the only light that will de away with the miser
able gasllghtand the abominable gasoline lights
with which tbe alleys and outer ward are
afflicted. SEVENTH WAKI).
