tered suit against Ann Turner, a colored
woman, for assault and battery,;at tbe ollk-e
of Squire Frank. A warrant was Issued and
the hearing took place this morning. The

Waites' comedy company will make their
appearance In the opera house for ene week,
commencing March 15th, at popular prices.
Tbe company is supplied with a full band
and orchestra, which gltesa street parade
and concert each day. The company will
appear in a different comedy or drama en
each evening.
The candy sociable held by tbe ladles of
tbe Presbyterian church In the lecture room
last night, was well attended and a very so
ciable affair.
Theycar of the Pennsylvania railroad
will arrive In Columbia en Monday after
noon te pay the empleyes for the preceding

The two thieves who yosterday morning
were successful in stealing a piece of nilk con
taining ene huudred yards lrem Watt A
Bband made a similar attempt at larceny nt
H. Z. Rhoads' jewelry store, at neon yester
day. One of them entered and asked .te he
some diamond rings. Several line
jewels were taken from the nhew
case and while Mr. Kheads ( who was
alone at the time) was allowing them te hlui
tbe second thief eutered, and after walking
up and down the store room, hurriedly,
said he would like te leek at some geld
chains. The diamond ring custemer told
Mr. Kheads he was net in a hurry, and
could wait en the ethor customer. Mr.
Kheads thanked him, but was prudent
enough te gather his diamonds together uud
lock them up before going te attend the
Sold chain customer. This fellow was rather
ard te pleas&Beveral chains weroshewu him
that did net suit, and when he found one that
be liked, he proposed te take it in oxchange
for one that his sister had given him. Mr.
Kheads' suspicious being aroused, he kept
his eyes watchfully en both his customer,
andcareiully locked up his chains bolere re
newing his attentions te the diamond pur
chaser. The fellows pretended nut te knew
each ether, and left without purchasing.
They answer the description of the thlees
who fleeced Watt & Shand exactly, and they
played exactly the same racket at both
places.
