W , Bess Menbter is for Welmer. Until a very
w recent period AVeimer was Capt. McMelleiPs
K right bower. He and McMelteu had a fall out

, Ment7sr. Welmer may be made superio

are against liltn. He Is a carpenter by trade,
atalrly intelligent man, but knows nothing
4 of the duties of the elllce, irMentzer could
Induce Welmer te stand aside and would
take p some practical engineer like Tem.

CIV Treasurer.
Fer city treasurer the present Incumbent,
Clayten F. Myers, has no opposition. iZx iZx
clerk el the quarter sessions, Dr. B. 1 W.
Urban has a hankering after this elllce. but
he will hardly make a canvass for It. Myers
bas his own ward nelld tu start with, and the
ether Influences behind hlui will make him
a bard man te beat.
CUT Solicitor.
Fer city solicitor the candidates thus far
are J. W. Jehnsen, the present law officer
of the city, Henry Carpenter, J. W. Deulin
ger and W. T. Brown. Jehnsen Is the
shrewdest politician and wire-puller of the
let, anciniitieiigii lie may net n.ive tils own
ward solid, he has warm friends In feine
ether wards who will be for him. While
net originally a Besenmillur man uu teed
the mark en election day, and did all In his
power te keep the 1 eurth ward In line,
but the harder he worked the worse Boxy
tared. The result in that ward is well
known. Denllugcris the candidate of "Judge"
Eberly. W. T. Brown Is a candidate en Ins
merits. Henry Carpenter is backed up by a
Strang combination and has the best of the
fight
Street Comuiffmleiier.
Four persons have thus far announced
themselves its candidates ler street commis
sioner, and three of them come from the 9th
ward. The present commissioner, Jacob
Bert?, &eeks a re-election en the record he lias
made during the year he held that office.
Bertz has made a lair officer but he has the
bad habit of talking tee duich and tee loud.
Pete Gorrecht, who made a strong tight for
this elllce a year age, is also n candidate. He
bas wuie Iriends but hardly enough te see
him through. Harry Besh, et the Rauie ward,
is also a candidate, but his lollewlngwill be
email. i
Charley Buckiu, who was street commis
sioner a few years age, is also after the snap.
The tight, from prewmt Indications, will be
between Bertz and Bucklus.
TlieltPRiilttera.
Fer princ j al regulator the contestants
will be Cel. .S. C. Slaymaker atid Allan A.
Herr, the present Incnre'ient.
Fer asUtaut.ri'gulatersHubley and Albright,
the present officers, are candidates ler re
election. Antheny Leculer, sr., is also a can
didate for assistantrregulater, and he w III be
ene of the successlul ones.
Council OrgHiiliatleu.
It is said that Dr. R. M. Belenitis, who
only enters select council en tbe first Mon
day of April, aspires te bo'tlie president or
that body. He will get badly lett if Bebert
A. Evans wants te preside ler another year.
Aldermau Barr has opposition for the
clerkship In the person or Kduard S. Smeltz,
who clerked ler the street committee last
year. Indications point te the alderman's
re-election.
In common council Jacob M. Chlllas, clerk
of tbat body the past two j ear, will prob
ably le re-elected without opposition.
lhe only name thus far mentioned in con
nection with the presidency is that or Wil
