It 1ms been soveral years since fruit sold nt
se low prices tis Inst week. The ninrket was
completely overstocked villi fruit el fnlr
qinlity, nltlieugh tliere wn9 but n very llm llm
ited Hiipply of really flne stock. The rasii rasii
berry growers wero sadly disappointed by
the results of last week, as this fruit had sold
durltiBthoenrller part el tlie season nt very
prollUible prices, mid tliey nnllclpated lltlle
ornecliango from provleus prices. Hut no
peeple nre uiore easily Kitlslled nt n rasp
berry feast than New "Yorkers, nnd the sea
son lasted tee lengaml they boenme surfeltcd.
Thousands of cups of Keed raspberries of nil
tlie varlotles from Antwerps te Natives were
sold te liccnsed venders, Jam and syrup
makers, or te whomsoever would buy nt a
cent per cup, or .1 cents per quart, nnd In
many cases for even less price. Thousands
of quarts wero thrown nway. Anticipating
n smnllorcrep and shorter season than usual,
nearly every ene engaged In preserving, can
ning, or making syrup bought thelr supply
bofero last week, and no ene wanted any
and only bought because they wero se ery
cheap.
IH'ickberrics wero cheap, and thousands of
quarts of perfbetty sound berries wero whole
saled en each day eflast wcelc for as low as -1
cents ier quart, and very few could be sold
at nbove 8 cents per quart Thore were large
shipments of these, heriies from Delaware,
Maryland, and New .Tortey dining nil of last
week, nnd they nil arrived in geed condi
tion, but tlie dry ncallier has caused them te
be small and picscut a dried appearance, and
tlicre wero very few really niee blnckberries
te be had. Tboie will be a geed many rasp
berries liorethis wrek, and it Is net likely
that any will be wholesaled nt ever 5 cents
pur cup, anil only very line enes at that,
wliile the greater portion will be wholesaled
at about 3 cents per cup. Tlie biackliorrles
that will be here this eek will mostly ceme
from Monmouth county, N. .1., and It Is ex
pected that they will be of better quality
than any that liave been here fe far tills
season. Thore will, hoveor, be quite n
f;oed manv from I'pper Delaware and Vino Vine
and und ilammouteii, N. .1. The Dulnware
berries will be of fair quality, but the Vine
land and Haumionten berries will be very
small and shriveled, and geed berries can be
had all this week at fiein 5 te 8 cents per
quart.
Currants have been scarcer this season than
in Iho years, and hne been sold at much
higher prices. Kspcci.illy has this been the
i-ase with the small currant', such usare gen
erally used for making Jelly. Tlie currants
aie ery rlpe new, and tliose lieusekeepeis
who Intend nmking thcirewn supply el jelly
should net defer in getting them, as they are
fast being picked, and alter this week It is
doubted if any can boebUiluoJ. They have
been wholesaled nil the season at about 0
cents per pound, and will be wholesaled at
about that llgure tills week.
Thore will be seme very nice Hale's l'arly
peaches here tills week. Tlicre are a few
i growers in Delaware and Maryland who
enew hew te eultivate tills variety, aud
whero properly reared nnd all tliocendltlons
are suitable te ripen them they sometimes
mature perfeclly, nnd thou they nre a very
niee peach. This season lias been most lavor laver lavor
abie se far, hence seme lines ones nre ex
pected. Toward the last of the week thore
mny lien few Troth's Karly Irem Lewer
Maryland, and by tlie llrst el ne.t week tlie
regular I'enlnsula peach trains will com
mence te run. That portion of the renlnstila
whero peaches are the most abundant this
season Is the lower counties. Consequently
the early peaches will be in cheap as any te
be had this season. 1'e.ichcs will be sold
dining the first two weeks In August ntmod ntmed ntmod
eratoly low prlces, but in the latter part of
August and Iho llrst week of .Soptembcr they
will lie scarce nnd iiigli.
The outlook ler lrulltiiisweek is faverable
for consumers. Thore will be an abundance,
and rlpe pears, peaches and apple will be
cheap, while laspberries and blackberries
will be within the reach of almost every ene.
