;bter Stener Allowed Hat One Clerk for
the Future The Lie Freely Given.
The register of wills salary beard, made up
of the county commissioners, county audi
tors and Kegister Stener was convened at 4
o'clock en Monday afternoon in special ses
sion in tbe law library room of the court
beuse. County Commissioner Myers, the
president of the beard, statod the object of the
meeting te be te censider whether the
clerical force in the register's.emce is net in
excess of the wants of the ofllce. After the
object of meeting had been stated there was
a war of words between Commissioner
Myers and Register Stener. Air. Myers said
that Stener had lied te the salary beard at its
meeting in January when be premised te
glve the dutles of the olllce his personal at
tention, while Uie fact is that he was net In
his ofllce altogether ten hours since the llrst
Monday of January.
Stener retorted by telling Myers that he
dare net tell him outside the meeting that
be lied. He then endeavored te explain that
he had been building extensively this spring
Which kept him home, but in tbe future he
would give his olllce all his time and atten-'
Uen.
Mr. Myers offered Uie following resolu reselu resolu
teon: Iteiehed, That that fermer action of the
alary beard be rescinded, se far as it relates
te Uie clerical help in the register's ofllce and
that from July 1, the register be allewed 0110
, clerk at ?1,000 per year. Commissioner Hart
inan secondeu the resolution and it was
adopted by a unamlneus vote, the three
commissioners and auditors voting ter it, and
Mr. Stener declining te vote.
The salary beard in January gave the reg
ister two clerks at (000 each, aud Israel Car
penter and A. C. Edwards are the clerks in
the ofllce. Register Stener has net yet deci
ded what he will de about the matter, but
from July 1, only one et the clerks will draw
salary from the county. He may keep both
en and pay ene out of his own salary.
, It Is said that the force of ether elllces in
the court house will be considered by the
salary beard at the next meeting 011 the llrst
Monday in August, with a vlew te reducing
'the number of clerks.
