could hear the sweep of the scythe and smell

as one should stere In the cells of one's

a long tlme in peaceful enjoyment,
watching the swallows or kingfishers as they
Hashed through the sunbeams that slanted
through the flickering leaves. After awhlle

with the stream, guiding myself at intervals
with a vigorous stroke of my paddle. Black

"Sholley," exclaimed I, readlng the title.
"Yes," said she. "It has met with the
same fate as its peer author.
She glanced at it with a comical little ex
pression of sorrow.
" Yeu are much kinder than I deserve,"
said I, still feeling red and foolish ; " the
only way I can make amends Is by helplug
you oft" B
"Hadn't you hotter get off yeurself first T"
Bhe answered, laughing.
Se I commencod a violent struggle with
my paddle, vainly splashing the water like
a wild geese with a breken wing, but unable
te budge an Inch.
My companion In misfortune, fully appre
ciating the absurdity of the spectacle, burst
Inte a fit of laughter, which she strove in
vain te check.
" I am glad," said I, as I paused for want
of breath, " that I ullerd you seme amuse
eont" " It is se funny that I can't help it," said
she.
" Pray don't try en my account," sold I
magnanimously; "lam quite aware I ewe
you seme compensation."
At this point there was a rustling in the
bushes ; a big block deg appeared, and, de
scending te the water's edge, began te bark
Joyously.
"Here's Hecter," said she, Hthen Dertle's
uet far eif."
I Inwardly hoped Uertle might net be a
young man inclined te glve himself airs.
As uhe spoke the owner of the deg stepped
from behind the bushes. He wat a nice
looking boy of about twelve, whom I guessed
te be her brother.
" Hulle, Edith 1" he exclaimed, " what's
the row," -
