Tlie stnlouient is made that tlie presence or
Lord Randelph Churchill In tlie cabinet of
tlie Marquis of Salisbury, means thonon.ro thenon.ro thonen.ro
novval or tlie crimes nctfer Ireland. If this
is tlie case the Conservatives begin olllee
Itli tlie adoption or a policy in regard te
Ireland which was Hadlc.il until Churchill
thrust It down the threat of Ills party. That he
should be able te de tli is and, at the same tluie
assume tlie responsible olllee of socretary or
state rer India, is the most romarkable Tact in
connection with the transler of political
power from oue party te the ether in the
United Kingdom and Ireland. l,eid ICni.
ilulph Churelilll.kiiews nothing or ofllce rou
tine, and his lltnosser ueu-lltness for the nit nit nit
pointment given him has te be doiuenstiated;
but he is a leader nuda power which had te
be reckened with in the formation of the
cabinet.
He is the third son of the sixth Dukn et
Marlborough, Inte lord lieutenant of Ire
land, and brother of the present duke. Ills
mother was the daughter of the Marquis of
Londonderry. He was born in the year
1810. In 1S7I he was graduated at Oxford.
Three years after he was elected a niember of
the Heme of Commens, mid lias held the
neat evor Hi nee. Should .Sir Stallbrd North Nerth North
ceto be given .in earldom, and honre taken
se-U In the Heuso of Lords, Churchill would
lead his parly in the Commens.
The young statesman is an able debater,
und cuiplejs vigorous language in the ex
pression and dolense of Ills views, which as
legard te exceptional legislation for Ireland,
me sometimes net in harmony with these of
his party. He distrusts ltussla and is o e
posed te concession when British Inlerostsnre
assilled. In this rosneet he ami the Marquis
of Salisbury are in full accord. Peace, may
be maintained with Russia, the Liberal oppo eppo oppe
Hltloii, led by Mr. Gladstone, being tlie ma
jority In the Uouse of Commens, nnd belng
able thorcfero te displonse the ministry should
grave occasion arise. At the same tiine there
is greater danger or war new that the Mar
quis of Salisbury takes the place of the Karl
orGrauville as secretary or statu Ter foreign
utl.iirs. Increased Irritation between the
powers engaged in negotiation might easily
come nbeut, and create a war leellng in
England which would gle tlie Conserva
tives a majority in the election te take place
next fall.
Lord Churchill Is married te Miss Jeremo,
eldest daughter el Mr. Leenard Jereme, or
New Yerk city. Until his present appoint
ment he was a comparatively peer man,
worth only 2,000 n year.

A cable disintch te the New Yerk J'eil saj-s
of the" Diaries of Gorden at Khartoum " te
be published by Kegan, Paul it Trench nt
Louden, that the contents nre awaited with
the livoliest lntorest.
The diaries fill 3'J.'i fuges, and there are
l.W pages of npcudlx. The diaries are a
strange medley, and were written evidently
in porleet sincerity, but varying in
style, manlier and subject from page
te page. One page will be an
abstruse statistical discussion of the
sesial and ixilitlcal aspect of the Kgyptiau
problem. Then fellows, perhaps, n page
reading like a Biblical commentary, with
many scriptuial quotations and cress refer
ences giving Gorden's peculiar views, which
thoedlters have been coin polled te make a
great cllbrt te explnln In feet-notes. Then
suddenly will come a bit of reiiiinisconce of
llh) in Knglaud or oUewhere, orastery about
seme Arab child. Then he turns aside te
discuss Ills own feellngs and habits, and ends
perhaps witn a iiiiiny sietcii inunwcu ny me
declaration that he is resigned te Ged's will.
Much is underlined.
The following extracts will gieau iilea of
the varying character of the diary and of
Gorden's opinions :
" I am tossing up in my mind whother, IT
this plnce Is taken, te blew up the palace and
all in it, or be taken end with Ged's help
maintain the laith, and IT necessary stiller for
it. I think I shall elect for the last."
" Frem a professional military point el
view, speaking materially, I wish I was the
Mahdi. I would laugh iitall Kurope."
"Fer my part 1 am always frightened, ami
very much se. I lear the futuioef all en
gagements. It is net tlie fear of death; that
is past, thank Ged. llutlfeardele.it audits
consequences te us. The near approach et
the Mahdi has net troubled me. 1 have al
ways felt that ViO should meet face te face
ere the matter ended." (It will be remem
bered that Gorden's head was taken before
the Mahdi, according te the latest ac
counts.)
"I own te having been very insubordinate
te her majesty's government, but it is my
nature. I cannot help it. I knew if I was
chiel I would never employ myself, feri
am an Incorrigible. 1 am net going down
te history as the ciuse of this expedition. I
decliue the imputation. I came te deliver
the garrison." (Tills is constantly re
peated.) "Tlie waste or money and expense or lire
by the present expedition is utterly due te
tlie indecision of our goveruiuout."
"I hate our diplematics. I think, with
few exceptions, they are arrant humbugs."
Here fellow sn funny sketch of two diplo
matists, initialled K. X. and II. G., discuss
ing the above statement. J
" Put yourself in iny position. If you say,
Make n ranid retreat and leave Kemt.tr te its
lute,' I will say, 'Ne, I would sooner die
IlisL' Il'ynusav, 'Theu you are no longer
governor general,' then I am nil right. All
responsibility Is en you." This Is repealed
again and again, and 'is the key of Gorden's
whele view.
" If any emissary letter comes oideiing
me te leave, I w ill net obey it, but will stay
hore, fall w Itli the town, and run nil risks."
The last entry is en December 14, and says:
" New mark this : If tlie expeditionary foice
(and I ask for no mere than 'J00 men) de net
come In ten days, the town may fall. I have
done my best ter the honor of my country.
GiKHl-bye."
The appendix contains a letter of nine
pages from the Mahdi te Gorden, telling of
the capture or Stewart nnd the consuls, giving
the contents of many of Gorden's dlsjiatches,
nud adding: " Me nover ml-s any your
news," and summoning him te Iieceiuna
Moslem or huricnder. Gorden's only com
ment en this letter was, " Couieon."
Throughout the diary it is stated that the
help of Turkey was the solution of the Sou Seu
dim. .Se Jtoeiu te llury the Drail lu NelT Yerk.

l-'or the reason that the Lancaster club had
played such geed ball en thelr trip, the pco pce pco
ple el this city wero w llllng te overlook thelr
ilofeats In Newark, en Mendny nud Tuesday.
Vosterday n large crowd gathored at the park
exporting te fioe n geed gaine with the Tren Tren

borero the gaine was ever the nudlonce was
threughly disgusted with the home club.
Someof theui played mera Uke a let of school
boys than professional men, nnd thelr errors
were inade nt the most critical times
In the gaine. Fer instance, in the secend
lulling, when thore wero two men en bases
n rather het ground ball was sent te Floed.
He should have stepped lt,but It went through
him te the fonee. After recovering It, he al
lowed It te drop from his hand again and by
the time It was llelded the batter himself
and two ethers wero home. P.irker was but
little hotter In left field and had a cnuple of
very ugly and d imaging errors. Outsidaef
Kuodell, the visitors played well in the
Held. The catching of that player was
miserable ami he allowed no less than four
runs te be scored en passed balls, whllea
number of men reached first nfter having
three strike.
Smith pltched for the home club nud he
wns well peuudnd, especially by the peer
hitters or the Jersey team. T'lernan was
also hit quite lroely, but It Is very certain
that he Is tee much by rar Ter the home club.

The Philadelphias cannot hit Clarksen, of

The umpires et the Southern League are
causing niore trouble than the locusts.
Pieiseii, Inte or the Newark, was given a

There is talk el releasing seme men en the
Lancaster club, and no one would blame the
mnnngemcut if they did.
The Trenten club has arranged te play
games in Williamsport, Friday and Satur
day. They leav e Lancaster te-morrow morn
ing. Umpire Decker, whose decisions in St St
Leuis yesterday, gave se much dissatisfac
tion, sent In his resignation last night te the
presldent of the league.
The Lancaster pitchers cannot blame ethers
for the misorahle work this week. The hits

Ohllield is compelled te de considerable
work just new en the Laucaster club, but he
does it well. Besldes belng ene of the finest

that club in a Tew days.
It is strange that s ucli peer ball-players as
theso comprising the Brooklyn ami Balti
more clubs have the nerve te kick when a
geed man is brought among them. Yester
day Barnie showed that he possessed mere
ceurage than tlie Brooklyn management.
Barnie did net want an Lastern League
club in Baltimore, and new u nine in tint
association would scarcely think it worth
whlle te play such a peer team as tlie Balti
more. They are dc lea ted every day, either
by mess-back nines or theso of their associa
