The npxt part consisted of tlie rendition of
the cantata or Queen Ksthcr. The inutlcl
pants in this cantata ably sustained their
roles and preved te the aiullonce that the
musical education of the pupils of tlie aca
demy has been very thorough. The follow
ing young ladles sang and acted their parts
in a very pleasing manner. King, Miss
Mary Craven ; Queen Esther, Miss Clara
Beeth; Merdccla, Miss I.lllie Stoinhelsor;
Hainan, Miss Clara Strausc. Tlie miner
characters In both cantatas were well taken
and thodlfTeront songs wero well rendered.
Miss Sadie E. Shiudle presided at the piano
and did her part well. Instrumental ho1e,
duets and tries were played during tlie acts
of the cantatas, and all theso who were
assigned te this portion of the pregramme
did exceedingly well.
The conferring of tlie honors was tlie third
part of the pregramme Tliouciidcmie honors
were cenf erred en Miss Mary Craven and the
composition honors en Miss Mary Carrell
and consisted of a chain ami mark.
The valedictory address or Miss Mary
Craven closed the oxercisos.

ed the backing straps upon the herse or M. J.
Wagner, the Slnger sewing machine agent
in Columbia, yesterday afternoon. This was
net discovered until Mr. Wagner wasdriving
down Mill street tewurds Frent, wbicli is
very steep. The wagon pushed against the
herse, causing it te liecome frightened, and It
started te run awav, but bcfoie it had gene
any distance Mr. Wagner succeeded In stop step
ping the animal. The only dainuge done
was the breaking of the cross-piuce of the

The infilling of the newly elected pastor of
the First Colored Uaptlst church will take

On July Fourth the rluk will be open all
day, and a carnival will be given in the even
ing. All theso who Intend te participate are
expected te wear an old-fashioned cap made
in the style of tlie Geerge Washington cap.
The ladies will also wear eld-style dresses.
The regular monthly sociable will be held
by the Second stroet Lutheran church en
this coming Saturday evening in the yard

Putnam Clrcle last night in their ledue room,

The trial of the Shawnee lire cnuiue took
place last evening at tlie river. Tlie engine

Wm. Woeucock, of Elizabeth, N. J., is
visiting in town. He was formerly a ro-d-dentef
Columbia, and this is his llrst visit in
II years.
The pay ear of the Heading fc Columbia
railroad made its appearance in town te-day.
The presonce of the circus in Columbia to-te-morrow
will draw our country friends te
town and will be a gala day. The show is
said te be lirst-class in every particular, and
it will delight the small boy.
Adam Hedcnhauscr is having built a sand
dredging machine which will enable him te
get better sand and In larger quantities than
by the old methed of using tlie hand shovels.
The attendance at the rink last night was
quite large, although tlie parties from out of
town that were exjmcted te be present lulled
te put in an appearance. The rink will be
open every Tuesday and Saturday night, and
the Irenville band will be In attendance.

Alderman Ilarr's ofllce was crowded this
morning, tlie occasion being tlie hearings of
tlie twelve tramps arrested by Constable
Dern and Ofllcers Ritchey und Headman in
Maner township. Tlie trumps gave the
names of James Regan, Jeseph Hyau, Jehn
Fisher, Win. Reynolds, Nicholas I Iaus, Win.
Wegan, Wm. Simpsen, Jehn Seuder, Jehn
Hans, Veter Lewis, David Martin and Jehn
McGulre. A number of farmers residing in
the vicinity of Masonvllle tcstllled that they
wero greatly annoyed by tramps this sum
mer loitering en iheir farms and building
flres en their laud. They dlrccted Censtable
l)ern te arrest them, and the capture of the
twelve abeve named was ellectcd by him, as
sisted by the two Lancaster olllcers.
Thoelllccrs testified that they found the
men lounging around tlie camp tires built en
Mr. Martin's (arm.
Ten of the accused alleged that they iiad
ceme from New Jersoy nud oxpected te get
work from the farmers of our county during
harvest. All claimed te tie working men,

week was accidental. The alderman commit

killed at Scran ten en Sunday. The Scranton
Jlcpublicnn gives tlie following particulais of
the accident :
"II. A. Mullen, a machinist who caiuojte
Scranton a few weeks age unci obtained em
ployment in tlie Iren company's shops,
climbed ever the fence skirting tlie high em
bankment between the Lackawanna avenue
bridge and tlie D. L. .V W. railroad briilge en
Saturday afternoon. The ten of tlie embank
ment Is inclined. Mullen f-jftdeunand went
te sleep. Presently he rolled ever the em em
luukmeut and made a sheer descent et tw on
ly feet. He, struck upon the Lehigh aud Sus
quehanna railroad and was killed The Jury
which Corener Deancmpauncled came te the
conclusion mat .Mullens ueatli wascaused
by his rolling ever the embankment while
hi a stupor. Mullen had no bearding house
aud slept about tlie shops. A Grand Army
or the Repuhlic badge was found in a ce.it
that Mullen left In the weiks. Messrs. A. It.
Stevens and 'I'. J. Themas ideutilled him as

Lackawanna that comes under the new law

Mary Mullen, his mother, with his wife and

The deceased was a geed mechanic und

shop of A. C. Welchans and ethers in tills
