David Downs, or Carben Jjun, I'a, lies in .1
pauper's grave and his mother is in thu
Bradford county peer house, although the
two, within a few weeks, possessed $3,000 in
cash. Downs and hisyiethcr were almost
the sole remaining inhabitants of Carben
Bun, a village desertcd a year age, when the
coal workings of the region were given up.
The two were known te be misers: Mrs.
Downs often having geld pieces exchanged
iw greenbacks, anil, after work closed, they

Alley Gees Down In the Creek and Is ICcilted
With Much Difficulty.
On Wednesday evening about twenty-flve
boys from this city went in bathing in the
Conestoga at the ' Three Stumps" in Hanck's
meadow. Among tlie number was Abraham
Frankford, aged 10 years, son or Miles
Frankford. This little fellow jumped upon
tbe back or an eldor boy and the two at
tempted te cress the creek. When they get
in deep water both sank and went under
threo tlmes befere their companions were
able te rosctie them. Yeung Frankford was
unconscious at least litteen mlnutes during
which time the crowd steed him en his bead
and did everything olse befoie he recovered.
The crowd was terribly frightened and suc
ceeded in keeping the affair te themselves
since.
This should be a warning te small boys
Who persist in going swimming befere they
are scarcely able te walk te the creek, and
parents would de well te leek after them. It
