Whlle speaking of General Grant's illness
te an old frontiersinan this morning who has
been here for thrce or four days en business
bofero ttie land olllce, the man of quarter sec

On ene occasion Grant, then n lieutenant,
and a lad', and Jehn Altman, the new well
known mall contractor, occupied selely ene
of the stages en the Southern overland route.
The driver was a master of profanity, and
every time n horse's hoof struck the ground
he would accompany it with n chunk nl
choicecuss words. He had n volce llkea
calliope, tee, and It was oxtremely unpleas

going te join her husband, an nrmy

Altman could stand It no longer. IIe get up,
poked his head out of the window, and
and told the driver ir lie dld'nt shut
up he would lick him at the next
cbange station. That tickled the driver te
death, and h'6 amused himself until the sta

number et teeth, eye", iawbenes and rilis he
would knock out of " the tenderfeet lnslde"
when the station was readied. Altman. who
was a wonderfully powerful man and per
fectly scienced, took that driver out behind
the shed and beat him se badly that a coyeto
would liava run away from the sight. The
restofthe jeurney was silent, as far ns the
driver was concerned, tint Altman nnd (J rant

that which had characterized the first part of
the trip. Alter soveral hours they beparatcd
Grant having arrived at ills destination.
In 1S70 Altman canie en te Washington te
see about soine mall contracts for which he
had been the lowest bidder, but which for
seme reason had net been awarded te him.
One afternoon he was standing in ft out or
Wlllard's liotel when a stout man with full
beard closely cropped steppod up te him and
inquired : " Is your name Altman ?"
Jehn replied that he had thejdlstingulshcd
honor of bearing that name.
"De you retiiuinlxir ene ilay twenty years
age whipping a stago-drlver who mw swear

"Oh yes" said Jehn.
"I'm the lieutenant who was In the stage,"
continued the stout man, "my name'sOrant.
Come up te the Whlle Heuso and see inc.
nnd If thore'Mniiy thing I can de for you let

up, and thrce days afterward he was en his
