Why Veung Women Marry Olil Soldier.
The recent case of a soldier applying for a
pension shortly bofero his death, which he
expected hourly in order that ills wife should
draw a pension after his deatb, illustrates
ene of the most flagrant abuses or the present
pension system. Itsoemsto be a speculative
business cnterprise wittt certain young
women te marry old soldiers who cannot
"iive long, se that they may draw ousleus as
widbws after their husband's death. "Yeu
will be surprised" said an etllclal of the
pension olllce, " when I tell you that thore
are new en the pcuslen roll of the
department 21,000 pensioners of the
waref 1812, all of them widows. That war
ended nearly seventy years age, and the
number or troops engaged in it was net re
markably great. These 21.000 widows drew
last year 1,832,000, or flve and one-half
times as much as the few thousand
old soldiers surviving. Of course the
explanation is that home or these
widows were married te the veteran
soldlers half a century or se after the war
was ever. They became entitled te their
pensions as widows whether they had been
widows ten days or bad celebrated their
golden wedding. It Is net improbable that
in the twentieth century u great many of the
21,000- widows will still be drawing
pensions en account of the war of 1812."

The Court lUfutee te Apprere Mia Salary et
the Prothenotary's Clerk.
At ihe last meeting of the salary beard te
fix the salary of Edward Winer, the prothon prethon prothen
otary's clerk appointed teYtll the vacancy
caused by the resignation of P. E. Slay-
maker, the salaries of Doputlea Jehn I). Mil
ler and Win. E. Krolder, were made Uie
same, (050 each, while that of Mr. Ultncr
was fixed at f&'A the same as paid te the ju
nior clerk in that office when the salaries
were adjusted last January. The minutes
of the salary beard wero sent te the court for
approval, as required by the previsions of
the salary act, and a day or two age they
wero sent back te the clerk of the salary
beard as disapproved. Tiie court are of opin
ion that the prothenotary, by giving his en
tire tline and attention te the duties of the
office, and the two doputlesare all that nre ro re ro
qulred te preperly perform the dulles of the
olllce, and that if the prothenotary does net
wish te make n hand in the office, he should
pay uie intra cierK out et ins salary.
The decision of the court has caused
quite n flutter among i-eurt hotise
officials and efforts will be made te have the
court reconsider their disapproval of the
third clerk te be paid by the county. The
argument issued is that the olllce has net
been run for years with less than three
clerksand the work cannot be dene with
less than three, bocause during a grcater
part of the year two common pleas courts are
in session, which tnke two men from the
ofUce and leaves only ene te de the current
wetk.
The county commissioners have served
notice en the treasurer that the salary of C.
F. Stener, register of wills, Is net te be paid
hereafter as he does net perform the duties of
the offlce. They claim that he lias net given
the olllce the slightest personal attention.
They held that they have the power te ro re ro
ceuvouo the salary beard anytime, and cut
down the clerical ferce If It is demonstrated
that tee many clerks have been allowed. As
te the resister's olllce it is claimed that one
clerk is sulllcient te db the work. It is also
claimed that the county should net pay the
deputy clerk of the quarter Kesslens a salary
of S 1,000 ; that If the county pays him f 500
or fCOO, the clerk Mr. Settley wee docs net
de an v of the work should pay the balance
out et'lits pocket.
The county elllccrs claim that It nover was
the intention el the framers of the salary act
that the county was te make money out of
the effices and they will resist any attempt
te reduce salaries or cut down the force.
When the auditors meet en the first Monday
of July, there will no doubt be lively sessions
of the salary beards.

Jeseph A.Ocker, is the natne e( a horsedealer
from Littlestown, Adams county, who for
sevcral years past has been bringing horses
te Lancaster te seli. On Monday afternoon
he had a sale at the Mcrrimae herse stables.
Among the horses put up was n eerrcl which
Ocker guaranteed te trot in2:10. The animal
was finally withdrawn at t!7p. It is
about the ability of this herse te make this
tline that the discussion arose Ocker My
that en Tuesday morning rwveral gontlcmeti
approached hint and said they were ifltlior ifltlier
ized te bet $100 that the herse could nolinnke
as geed tlme as clalmed. Ne money Mas
put till.
1 1 Heme tlme later Ockcr met Kaulfmaii
DeutHch and the latter said he would het $100
that the herse could net make the tline.
Ocker said he would net glve the herse" a
record for that amount but would bet fMX).
Deulsch put up his check for that amount In
the hands or Id ward Knull'nmn, aud
as Ockcr had but f 100 he said he would
put up the balance later. In the afternoon
Ochorgave Mr, Kautrman MOO mere, and
asked if the ether money was up It was
then found that Dnutsch had taken ills check
down and put up f 100 in cash.
Ockersays that Deutsch afterwerds agreed
te put up the remainder of the money bo be bo
rero the race, or forfeit that alieady up. Yes
terday DeutKch went te Ocker and told him
mat no (.uciterj nan the best of him and he
would net put up the romalniler of the
meney, but would trot for the tlOO or glve
him f.'0 and net have the herse trot ; If this
would net ile the money would have te go te
the tioer. Ocker would net ogree te this.
Te-day was the tlme set far the trial or the
herse, and qulte a geed crowd gathered at the
truck this morning. Deutsch said he would
1)0 willing te have the herse trot for tlie 5100,
but would put up no mero. Ocker said iie
was willing te fulfill his part of the contract
and claimed the meney. Mr. Kautrman final
ly handed ecr the $200 te Mr. Ocker alter
being made socure by Mr. Ocker and friends,
in case any treuble was raised in the future
aixnii it.
Mr. Deiitsch'ii slery is te this ellect : That
he first oflered te bet $500 that the herse
could net make the tlme, but Ocker would
only put up f 100. Ockcrthcn went away aud
tried his herse, and upon finding what he
could de etntred te bet $.'iOO. Deutsch found
this out nnd then would net put up mero
than f 100, or would glve Ocker 50 nnd have
no trot. Ocker admits having spoeded the
horve, but says that that was before he agreed
te bet Deutsch.
Thore seems te be ndifforenco of opinion
In regard te the matter among horsemen nnd
the whele affair may lead te a law Milt.
Ocker claims thore wero mero men Interested
in the bet and that they want te Injure his
business here. He says that he was caught
only last summer by Lancaster people for $50
ferlelt In thosatue way. In this instance he
says the ineu who wagered with him
telegraphed te Kentucky and found out
what his horse, which was purchased thore,
could de and that is why they would net
