A fler the ground has been prepared, the

be done but watch the progress of growth
until the tlme of harvest, when tlie gathering
In must be performed; lint net he with corn,
potatoes, beauty sorghum and many otlier
crops that are usually denominated culti culti
vated crops. Krem the nature of these, In
order te secure satisfactory returns, they
must be planted nt such distances apart
as will admit or tlie free passage
or heat and light In erder te secure
preper development; but this will net
be accomplished If the unoccupied upace Is
allowed te be encroached upon by a dense
growth of weeds. There Is no iieeial demand
ler any such growth, nnd yet without taking
due precautions, in tliose sections or country
that have,, been cultivated for seme time,
weeds spring up se freely that In a little
tlme they will exert a serious iuliuonce for
evIL The romedy for this Is found in projier
attention te cultivation. The frequeut dis
turbance of the soil by means ei the cultiva
tor, herse hee or hand bee proventH the
growth or weeds, and net only that, It pro
motes the growth or the crop. It has been
estimated tiiat cultivation alone will add very
much te the amount or the crop, which fs

Unavoidable conditions very frepiently
determine tlie mode of planting potatoes.
Fer a soil in which te plant, if geed-sized
smooth tubers are te lie deslred, we bave
nover had anything better than thatrurnlshed
by hoiiie old outlying pnsture that Is dry and
inclined te sandy loam and that has net been
uuder the plow for seme years. Such Holds
are common In the elder and New Kngland
states.
Or there may be seme tract of natural inow inew
ing that has net been plencd ler years, which
is also geed. Plew the sod a few days bolero
desiring te plant, giving an opportunity te
dry and giving the surface a thorough dress
ing of horse manure. We prefer herse
manure te any ether manure niade upon
the farm, for the reason by o.er!monls
made in connection with ether kinds we
bave always found this te give the
best results. Then use the harrow
thoroughly, se that if pessible the sod
will be cut and tern in pieces and the uiauure
thoroughly inceriKirated with the soil. Werk
in tins direction cannot no tee inoreugii, as it
will tell in results. Our practice Is te cut
the seed te two or tliroe oyes and put oue
pioce in each hill. When ready I'er planting
we mark for the row with a herse plow te a
depth of threo or four inches below the gen
eral surface, making the rows about tnree
feet apart and the hills from ten te twelve
inches apart. In erder te give a Htartltis
sometimes desirable te use a llttle phosphate
in the hill, which can best be applied with
the fertilizer ilropper. The seed can be cov cev cov
erod by herse jiower or very quickly by
hand, and if projier attention is paid te culti
vation a geed crop el excellent tubers may
be expected.
