Amateur Detectlte llusluers.
Kiuin tin: hew Era,
The amateur detective business must le
running very short in its resources when it
places Its dependcuce en the capture of nn
outlaw upon the unnatural act ofbrethor
turning against and betraying brother. It
is a maxim as old us the family relation that
"bleed Is thlcker than water," and It was
uiHHi this well known fact tliat the law has
placed restrictions upon tlie testimony of
husband aud wife being received against each
ether lu criminal cases. It is an ollcnse
against society and Its laws for
a Ruzzard te steal, but it would
be a no 1cm glaring ollcnse against
humanity for n brother te refuse te
shelter and keep Irem starving the wife and
children of the ollendcr, and be the lustiu-
mentor his betrayal besides, ll thore was
any ovldenco that Martin Rurzard Is partici
pating iu the crimes of his brother, Abe, or
ethor etlcndcrs against tlie law, hff ought te
be punished ; but lu tlie absence of such
testimony any nttempt te twist his humanity
and the natural premptings of a brother's
love Inte a crime will result in a useless ex
penditure of the tlme et the court and the
money el the county. It Is the business of
detectives te detect and of courageous olllcers
te arrest, and shrewdness aud rourage In
either or IkiIIi will always command rcsicit.
