TheBlaniac organs, ene and nil, headed
by the IVt&uncand Philadelphia JJrcM,secm
te have get their orders te unfiul the
bloody Bhirt. With ene accord they are
pitching into the administration becauseit
has removed some ex-Union soldiers and
appointed some cx-Cenfcdcratcs te eHlce.
It is hoped te flrothe Northern heart by
incendiary appeals te that sort of cheap
patriotism which in every age has been the
last refuge for scoundrels.
When Grant called Akeniian into his
cabinet and distinguished I.eiigstrect ;
when Hayes made Key postmaster general,
and had his wife introduced te a Southern
audience, leaning en the aim of a man who
shoveWl the ground from under a Union
soldier's feet, because the repe was net
long enough te hang him ; when Mesby,
Ithe guerilla, was sent by a Republican ad-
I ministration te Heng Keng, and the whole
.party sold what was left of its biithnght
i Mahone tlie super-loyal party of great
aeral ideas estepped itself from objecting
ex-Confederates in eflicc; and it can
only hurt itself by renewing a faded and
,agged-eutissue-Butlct
it keep at it. The administration
will keen en its way. Most of the men of ma
ture age and (it talent in the Seuth wcie
in the rebel army; and they are new re
constructed citizens of that bectien, and
loyal adherents of the government. They
are mero te be trusted than some of the
loud-mouthed fellows who followed the
Northern armies, mostly behind the bag
gage wagons. The president has just said
that no ene-i?gged Union soldier, doing his
dntyKiipBly, shall Iks removed ; and ap ap ap
P'opRitalike these of Vilas and Mack,
rtretender te McClcllan and the offer te
Rosecrans, show Miat true soldiers who aie
true men are net te 'k overlooked.
It pleases the tllaii:'i organs te lieul.
Let them howl.
Tell All the Truth.
Four of the New Era's ielitical friends
had a bar-room altercation tliree weeks
age, which, occurring within doers, was in
some mysterious way kept fiem " the 10-
porters of all the city papers," until as a
matter of news they assumed that it had
become stale, Hat and unprofitable.
The New Era, however, which has at
last found it out, uses it new te point the
moral of a warning, that its rule te " over
look a young man's first escapade, en prom prem
ise te keep out of bad company and bad
habits in the future, will net apply te offi
cials elected te administer justice or handle
the public money, or who are entrusted
with any ether official responsibility te the
public."
And our mere or less esteemed contem
porary proves that it means what it says,
by net only deliberately suppressing' the
names of tliose engaged in what it calls " .1
very disgraceful scene and breach of the
peace," but by indulging in vague innuen
does, whicli reflect upon every alderman in
the city and leave it te be suspected that
almost anybody " directly and officially,"
or even " indirectly " " connected with the
city " might have been involved in it.
If the JVeie Era thinks a " disgraceful
breach of the peace among officials "even
these who are " under bends " te the New
Era, rather than te the public or their own
self-respect deserves the " penalty of ex
posure," as is certainly does, why does
their organ net inflict the penalty upon the
guilty, instead of casting the drag net of
suspicion ever the unoffending ?
If Alderman Uarr and City Tieasurer
Myers had an altercation, and Water Sunt.
Halbach and his Assistant Supt. Huber
interfered te step it, whatever was dis
graceful in the matter attaches te them in
dividually, and te them only. There is no
reason either for " officers of the law " nor
public journals te condone their effense ;
much less te distribute it ever ether offi
cials who may come within the Niw Era's
.classification.
Interpretation Wanted.
The very excellent majority of the
Pennsylvania state Senate have no stomach
for the passage of an anti-free pass bill,
Notwithstanding the constitution of Penn
sylvania which is the supreme law of the
commonwealth, that all of these- senators
sworeto support, without reservation we
hepe forbids the issue of free passes, and
commands the legislature te enforce the
prohibition by appropriate legislation, a
majority of the Senate refuses te enact the
necessary laws.
Among the recalcitrants are some Demo
crats, accounted worthy and cstimable men

mitted by tradition and principle the pro pre pro

Jail Inspection.
1 If theroareany innocent men in jail, It
is the duty of the inspectors te ascertain the
fact, and te meve for their pardon and re

increases the responsibility of the authori
ties te terminate their suffering from such
injustice.
Itisthodutyef the prison inspectors te

the county and the community that they
don't de it.
It is the duty of the people te elect In
spectors who will inspect.
The Congressional Apportionment.
One geed tiling about the cengicssiunal
apportionment bill befere the governor is
that no county Is carved up by it. All of
Rucks is left in ene district; and all of
Lackawanna, instead of the ravishment of
the present apportionment. Tlie proposed

of the present Democratic senators aie put
into Democratic districts by tills bill.
We should consider it very singular if

window and Kingsley and Shrecder lowered
her safely te the sitiewiilk. The repe was
brought up and Sullivan quickly fastened it
te another girl and sent nor down safely.
The repe caine a third time, and as tlie ether
girls by this tlme wero all sullecatcd or wero
afraid te vonture, Sullivan fastened tlie repe
te his own IkhIv, and was behuj lowered
when, as he was half way down, tlie llames
shot out of a window and he fell head fore
most te the sldewalk In tlie prcsence of a lior lier
rilled crowd of people who had witnessed his
heroism. When the girls woie jumping
from tlie w IndewH a large colored man heroi
cally tried te catch them and se break tlie
ferce of the fall. Ile neai ly lebt his ew n life
iu the attempt
As well us can be ascertained, there wero
about fifty occupants or the building, or
whom twenty or twonty-ilve wero girls iu
tlie llfth story. Tlie boys wero en tlie sec
ond and tlilid lloers, and this accounts for
their oscipe. There was an avonue ofeseape
whicli the panic-stricken girls did net think
of. It was an opening iu tlie reef, which
they could easily have reached from a bench
standing beside the wall, and. ouce en tlie
reef, they could have reached ether build
ings with perfect c.ise. The lack of ready
access te tills place lest all tliose lives.
TllK KIIUIMUN'S llKtlKl'.
The alarm brought the engines almost In
stantly, and as tlie llremen could reach the
building from the front nnd tlie rear, it was
net 11 ft eon minutes until the llre was se much
under control that Clilef Kngineer Wisby
was able te resell the fifth or top lloer. Hut
he was tee late te rescue the girls employed
tiiore.
The chlef said in speaking of It : "The
Iiouke is uet burned out ; in fact, the llre was
chlelly In tlie ilfth-stery. In the smokel
counted ten girls lying upon benches, tables
nnd ether things; some en the lloer. Thelr
clothing was net burned, but the skin en the
backs of their hands was scorched. It was
ntorrible sight tlie worst I oversawinmy
exporlenco. The girls lay where tliey had
fallen in thelr wild and holpless despafr."
liKAItTnilNDtNa bOBNKH.
The scene of the llre was heartrending.
Methers and fathers, and sinters and brothers
and friends crowded forward against the cor
don el police, wrluglng thelr hands nnd
meaning piteeusly ; "Oh, Oedl" "My dar
lings!" "My own llttle.glrl!" Tlie pollee
woie powerlo&s te stay the forward crush,
and evon a repe cordon was breken through.
Whonever a dead body was seen thore was a
sceno of domestic misery that borderod en
Insanity. "The peer girls" was an ott-re-pcatod
oxclamatleu from sympathizing fo fe fo
male hearts In the vast throng through which
the patrol wagons wero necessarily driven,
and as the minutes passed the throng was
nugmented by hundreds, until lives bocame
endiingored by tlie passing patrols. As seen
as the search ler the bodies bocame posslble
they were taken out rapidly, net by ladders
en the outside, but they wero borueout of the
front deer en the ground lloer east, and ene
whose lace was badly discolored was taken
back in the building en the west slde of the
building and douched in water that steed en
the lloer at that bide of the building.
Al'l'KAnANCS OK TUT. DEAD.
The scene at the undertaker's was most
distressing. Outside was a great crowd et
broken-hearted relatives, sobbing incon incen incon
selably. As coon as the bodies could be ar
ranged relatives were admitted. It was hard
te Identify the dead. The three girls who
between this go eminent uud China by ques
tions which ure distinctly of California
origin.
