Mr. Urban, from the committee, reported
that the city did

Mr. Urban agreed with Mr. Klddle that as
long as the chief does net engage in nny bus
iness te Iho prejudice of the city's interests,
be is net violating tlie city ordinance. Ah te
the contract for tlie horse-shoeing, that was a
Rinull inntter. Tlie committee deemed It ad ad
visabie te retain Mr. Walker, as he had done
the work satisfactorily for soveral years.
Mr. llorger said it was the duty of the
committee te award the contract te the
lowest bidder. Tills year Mr. Walker bid M
wuts per set higher than he win paid the

Mr. Walker's work. He could remind Iho

ported have already been published. The

The report of Dr. E. II. Illyus, health com
missioner, was presented by Dr. llelenlus
and read. It slates that the health of tlieclty
is at present comparatively geed, but the
sanitary condition orceruihi localities is very
bad, there being 111th, rubbish, and offal in
many streets and alleys that ought te be
removed. Thpre are dirty gutters that
ought te he cleaned, pig styes that ought te
be removed, sewers that ought te be ejcned
and flushed. There are butchers who allow
Iho waste from (heir slaughter houses te run
Inte the gutters. He urges that theV Iki
made le step this, as it is liable te breed dis
ease. Thore are dirty cellars and coss-poels
from which foul odors ami poisonous gases
are emitted that should be cleaned out. The
commissioner urges citizens te take all pos
sible means te guard against the chelera
or ether epidemics.

child, which died in December last, and

arrived in San Francisce Wednesday, from
Heng Keng, brings news of a collision March
28 en the Hiiautapa river between tlie Chi
nese ferry steamer Liu Yun, plying between
Wee-Hung and Shanghai, and the Ocean
Steamship company's steamer Orestes. The
Chinese steamer, which carried about ene
hundred passengers and a crew ei twelve, was
