The llecf Problem.
The Philadelphia Times asks why beef is
high ; and accounts for it by its discovery
that theie was a decrease in the number of
cattle in tlie country last year. It says that
New England and the Middle states lest
ever twenty-seven thousand head, and
Texas nearly a hundred thousand ; while
there-was a gam hi the Western states of
only ninety thousand.
If these sfvtistics nre true, they would
properly account' fur an increase in the
'price of beef cattle. They maybe true; we
knew nothing about them. AVhat we de
jknew, however, and what our suffering
tittle feeders all knew te their sorrow, is
Jjtbat'fat cattle are exceedingly low in price.
They have net been se low for many a j ear.
Tbe farmer in this county gets a less price
per pound this bpring for the cattle that he
has fed through the winter, than he paid
,for them last fall. He has te sell for about
five cents ier pound, or keep them ever for
,. summer grazing ; which all will de who
have the pastuie.
The Times man has been fitting his facts
te his statistics. His inquiry should be
-why beefjattle are se low when they are
se BSrrce; It, should uke te Kuaw wliv it

cratsef what they were went te style the
copperhead type. In war times every
Democrat was a copperhead; in these days
it Is admitted that seme Democrats went
te the war and that they must
have been loyal. The Mugwumps
of the nation, who are all lately
extracted from llcpublican nejts, and
who are as brim-full of patriotism new as
they were In the war days when they
staved In our cities and wearied heaven
with prayers for the success of our nrms
and the damnation of Democrats, declare
te President Clevcland that they have no
objection at nil te his appointing te ofllce
Democrats who went out te the war and
se wcre net , copperheads. They declare
that there are plenty of them around,
although they used te swear that no Demo
crats went te fight the rebels without being
changed en the instant into llepubllcans.
The Mugwump element is se satisfied
with its success in boosting Pearson into
the New Yerk pestefllce, that It does net
propesoto cease from its labors until It
has a child of its adoption in every place.
We await with interest te see the result of
its campaign. It may be that the Demo
cratic party did net elect Mr. Cleveland,
and that hi cldvatien was the unaided re

we are of opinion that if ever there was a
house founded en the sand, such will be a
political fabric raised upon a Mugwump
base.

The llnrdcn of Proof.
Tlie Philadelphia Press calls upon the
IXTKT.LinuKcnii te "prove its denial" of
the Press1 assertion "that tlie Democracy
have made three attempts te steal the
presidency, namely, in 1870, I8J5O and 1834,
that they finally succeeded last year and
included in the burglary forty seats in the
next Congress."
The lKTULLiaKxrjKU has called upon
the Press te prove its assertion. This is
the logical and usual course, we believe,
with intelligent newspapers and responsible
peeple who make charges. The fellow in
cap and bells whom seme Inscrutable dis
pensation has allowed te creep into the
columns of the Press should have a surgi
cal deratien performed en his head. He
seems te be as deficient in logic as he is of
truth or sense.
If he dcslrps te escape the imputation of
publishing a malicious and wicked lie, let
him proceed with his proof. Until he does
se he stands pilloried.

Tun physicians who have been making
capital for themselves out of the illness of
General Grant very probably possess a poten
tial Influence with the Medical Recerd, for
tlie whele of the last report of this publication
en O rant's condition is devoted toadefonBO

hedging is apparent in its remark. "Tlie

ei Itself be the cause of the death unless by

the doctors recall that the lead dlscase was
everything, and that the exhaustion produced
was simply the natural oenspquenco of it. It
Is only since wme cnterprlslng newspapers
penetrated the sick room that tlie doctors
hae found out that the local dlsease in Itself
was net necessarily fatal. It leeks very
much as though the Grant physicians had
entered into a conspiracy te get Grant at

XeTitt.NO affords mero convincing proof of
the vastness of this country than the startling
divergent in weather reperts in different
parts of the United .States. Thursday fur
nished a netable illustration of this. At
Whlte ltiver Junction, Vermont, the tfior tfier tfior
memcter registered U2 degrees in the shade
at 11 o'clock in the morning, and 01 at four
o'clock in the afternoon. On Wednesday the
tompcrature was IK) at two o'clock in the
afternoon. Hack from the Connecticut and
White rivers a low miles, the raids are almost
impassable from snow and mud. Jn Gaines
ville, Texas, and itsimmodiate vicinity, thcre
were thirteen inches of rainfall, followed by
floods of the most disastrous character. Fur
ther te the northwest, Colerado was visited
by the heaviest snow storm ever known in
that section of the country. JTully twenty
luetics of snow fell, as much as the aggregate
of the previous falls of the whele winter.
Certaluly a country that can beast of these

Must we glve up another fend legend,
cherished slnce theso glorious days of child

tain Jehn Smith and Interceded te save his
Ufa just as the executioner's bludgeon was
raised te strike T Alas, we fear that even this
saerifice must lie tnnde upon the nllnr el In
exorable Truth. Mr. W. IM'oele, thowoll thewoll thowell
known librarian of Chicago, In a recent nrtl nrtl
cle, sums up the ovldcnce and bIiews that
tborrlncess Pocahenlos of our childhood
was myth. At the tlme when Captain
Smith was supposed te have fallen In leve
with horrutergratltudo for her Intercession,
Powhatan's dati;hler was but "a child of
tonne years old." And, what is even mero
damaging te tlie lcend, It seems that accord
ing te Smith's own statement hislifowes
nover " In danger at any tlme after he wits
brought Inte the prosence of Powhatan" se
that obviously the episode of the entreating
Pocahontas, the brawny oxecutloncr, with
his bludgeon high in air, and Captain Smith
pronaen the ground, tled hand and feet,
with his head en a leg and an expression of
suspense en his countenance, existed only
in the brain of seme Imaginative chronicler.
The captivity of Smith took place In 1C08,
and In that year he wrete and published in
Londen his "True Relation" of It. It was
net until 1021 that an odltieu with seme addi
tions appeared, and In it the first hint from
which the whele story has been fabricated.
Tlie tale runs thus :
"Having feasted htm after their host bar
barous manner they could, a long consulta
tion was held, but the conclusion was, two
great stones were brought liofero Powhatan ;
then as many as could layd hands en him,
uraggeu nun te mem, ami iiicrcen iaiu 111s
head, and beliiK ready with their clubs te
-beat out his bruins, Pocahontas the Kings
doarest daughter, when no lntreaty could
prevail, get his head In her armes, and laid
her owne upon tils te save him from death ;
whereat the Emperer was contented he
should llve te make him hatchets, and her
bells, beads and copper; for they thought
him as well of all occupations as thomsclves."
Having regretfully surrondercd'tho legend
Itself we are prepared te knew the truth
about Pocahontas, who was, indeed a real
person, hut who did net possess the estima
ble (inalities which tradition has given her.
Thus her ery muue Pocahontas signifies
" Llttle wanton," and according te tlie In
dian fashion she ran naked until she was
atxiut twolve years old two years, at least
after the Smith episode When, seme tlme'
later, she married tlie Ktigllslimaii none,
nothing was reported about lier having saved
Captain Jehn Smith's llfe. Hut Mr. Peelo
finds it easy te explain the original of the
legend. He says :
'The weak sixt in Smith's chantcter was
Ids personal vanity and boastfiilness. Hu in
vented the Pocahontas story sixteen years
alter he alleged it te have occurred, In order
te gratify his leve of notoriety. Slnce he had
left Virginia, Pocahontas had married Jehn
Holfe, an Englishman. In 1010 she had vis
ited England, and had been received at court
nnd in siA-iety u a reytl princess. In the
next book he wrete en Virginia, Smith could
net resist tlie touiptatien te connect her name

the story before. Hut this could he ar

giving It the date or 10 lf, and would print it

and te minds llke Mr. Jehn Estcn Cookes,

his personal vanity, and conforming te a
custom of his day?"
Certaluly net. We Itegrndge the gallant
