A Heartrending Kcene at Haven ltun Little
Hepe for tlie Entombed.
About 1 o'clock Monday afternoon one of
the gangways of the Cuyler colliery at Haven
Run, Schuylkill county, operated byS. M.
Ilea ten Sc Ce., caved in without warning, en
tombing ten miners who were at work inside,
The cave-In occurred about 400 feet from the
bottom of the slope, and was caused by a
sudden crushing of the timbers. The names
of the ten men entombed are : Frank Me
Laughlin, William Andersen, Jehn Ander Ander
eon, Henry Mervine, Ben Maurer. Nicholas
Pureell, Barney Smith, Michael Horrify,
Daniel Kouney and Jehn Cavanaugh. There
is no means of ascertaining whether thelm-
firlsened miners nre dead or alive. Messrs.
lea ten A Ce. are doing everything possible
te rescue the men, but the danger of ap
proaching the break makes it difficult te de
anything te that end and also prevents the
hundreds of men that have gathered at the
scene Irem going te work te rescue the im
prisoned miners. The miners who are ac
quainted with tlie ploce have little or no hope
of these imprisoned being rescued alive. Tlie
scene at tlte mouth of the slope is heartrend
ing in the extreme. The unfortunate miners
are all men of families, add the appealing
cries of their wives and children fill the air
in the vicinity of the fatal mlne.
Exploring parties who attempted te enter
the mine report It a romplete wreck, and all
hopes of rescuing the imprisoned miners allve
has been abandoned. The slope Is 700 feet
deep, nnd is dlvided into four lids. The ten
men new in the mine were In the lower lift,
and tlie place is closed te the bottom of the
first lift, forty feet above. There are three
openings te the mind an atr held and two
slopes, and all tiiree are closed below the
first lift The dangerous condition or the
mines net only prevents rescuing parties
from doing any work but forbids even a
thorough examination of the workings. The
concussion caused by the fall was se great
that th6 mine cars at the feet of the first lift
were forced up the slope a dlstance of fifty
feet Minera who are acquainted with the
workings doclare it net only Impossible te
rescue the men alive but doubtful whether
even their bodies can be recovered. It Is
their Judgment, also, that the colliery is u
completo wreck. The colliery employed
from 150 te 200 men when working, but for
tunately, was net in operation Monday.
