He placed a letter in bcr hand,
It came from ever sea t
"We'll go te great Amerlcu
Where linns and Qretul be.
liana has a field of growing wheat
Bread as our own Lymflerd I
Why, wife, In that far wonderland
A peasant Is a lord 1"
The Danish wife grew very palef
"Think of .our little ones I
Hew win we move se large a fleck,
Eight daughter!, seven sons!"
''One cannot tc'.l," the husband laughed;
"Really, Until ene tries.
But we will show In freedom's land
HW blue are Danish 0) est"
The wife knew well hew peer and scant
The1 barley grew this ye.ir ,
Fifteen young mouths tire many months
Te feed when bread Is dour.
"And, Hilda, where the children are
Would seen be home,, you knew,
The husband urged. " Aye, se It would,"
She answered j " we will go."
The crop brought In a little fund I
The brlndle cow was sold
And long-familiar household tilings
Went for Kbit or geld.
And then, at length, with tear and wall,
Hand clasped the parting hand ;
And for the steamer'heavlng fleer
They left the stable land.
The children, curious for the new,
Went ruglng here and there t
Shern yellow heads undHaxen braliU
Wire bobbing e cry where.
The mother could net keep the half
Under her sheltering wing;
" Them's but one wny," the rather cried,
I'll tle them with 11 string." .
lie called them nil about him t then,
True te bis Jovial word,
The thirteen thit could walk he lied
Together Hit a cord.
Odd heights nnd sizes, girls mid boys,
A rosy Inughlng row ;
Nene reuld escape, nenu stent away ;
Where one went all must go.
"New, wlfe, If half of them get wild
And heedless In their play,"
lie said, "the ether half nre sura
Te pull the ether way.
The strong legs will go slew te suit
The toddlers' stumbling knees,
And they will make the geed old ship
Hum like a swarm of bees."
Ah, hew tha brown or ma wind came
Upen each sturdy face,
And hew they clambered, peeped and played,
In c cry nook nnd place. 4 ,
And hew , w lien tempest 011 them burst
Out or n slenny sky,
The waves nere cradle tock te them,
The lear win lullaby 1 '
Thus arm te arm held fait nnd Bnfe,
Frem rtie te set of sun,
'The little shipmates w era until
The voyage leiig was done.
And when toward the West they sped
Upen the hunylng train,
Still did the father's tctheilng knots
Bind little Dane te Dane.
Oreen be tha fields that may be theirs,
And kindly bend their skies,
Ner cloud or w ant, nor homesick tear
Ever bedim their cj ej !

Seme Timely Hints Fer the Husbandman and'
Horticulturist.
Frein the Germantown Telegraph.
In the mere lfefthern latitudes many a
geed housew ife, Who lias tcnderly cared for;
a collection of choice plunU during the cold'
winter, has been called te mourn their
destruction because of seme sudden and un
expected cold t a e that has occurred late In
the spring. We lnue known of many in in
atances of this kind, - liore planta had been
kept in 11 fine thrhiug condition Inte March,
giving premise of great beality en the open
ing of spring, and because of an apparent
moderation of leather are believed te be
seeuxe from harm, when a change of tem
perature from niutte morning would be
sufficient te destroy the eutire collection.'
"Where a regular conscratery is preided
and kept at a uniform temporature this is net
likely te occur, but Is appllcable te these
cases where the plants are tended in the
windows of the living or setting-roein, which
is heated only by a weed tire during the day
and night, the latter of which is. neglected
When the weather is believed te be mild and
which Is the cause of nil the mlschiet. The
only safe courwe te ln pursued is te guard
against cold until thore is reasonable surety
that it will net occur ;iu this way plants will
be saved, and net only that but the geed
housewito will be saved the pain of looking
upon a niiiBS of Irezen and blackened plants
which she lias spent hours in caring for and
admiring.
Keeping Dees.
Te make the special branch of farm indus
try successful in the sensa of preilt requires
that it be made a specialty ; but te satisfy the
demands ei the average farmer's family ler
honey for domestic use does net roqulrea
very great extxmditure el time nor meney.
All the capital iu the busiuess is ene or two
colonies at the start, w Kb. a fevv et the old-
tashlened box hives, as they were called. The
avorage larmer should avoid any and all el
the modern bce appliances ; these belong te
prolessienal apiarians and net te nou-prelcs-wionals.
The chief design of the farmer iu keeping
bees is the production at little or no cost of a
fevv pounds of honey te be enjeyed by the
members of his own household, and se the
increase of colonies is no .matter of interest
te him. All that is necessary is te set the
hives containing the colonies upon seme
suitable frame and await the dovelopmeutof
events. If the colony is a strong ene, early
in June, it should threw oil' a swarm; then
it la necessary te act Get n table containing
a clean spread and set it near where the
swarm lias alighted -with the hive te contain
thorn and seme blocks for it te set upon, and
then witli a knife or saw carclully cut oil the
branch containing the 'young bees and place
it carefully upon the table, placing the hive
ever It, and they seldom fail of going into it
If afraid nf the bees, cev er the hands with
gloves, and the face and neck, w ith a veil or
uetting,bcfere commencing operations. Be
fore the bees start out Iu the uiernlnc set the
new lilverf where it is te remain threugli the J
Hummer.
Although it may be called an unmerciful
act, a farmer cols Justitied, in the lall, when
the season is ever, in taking a hive or mere,
ns the case may be, and destroying the bees
by means of brimstone, taking the honey for
his use. Hy following this ceurse little trou
ble is occasioned, and tliose remaining are
allow ed te remain undisturbed through the
winter, which they will almost ulvvays pass
in sately without any attention save removing
snow te allow a free passage of air.
Injured by Frosts.
The peach is ene of the most delicate fruits
known te horticulturists, and yet if properly
treated it may be grown In every state of the
Union. The great ancestor of the peach was
a purely tropical plant that could net endure
the least touch of frost, and se it, is net sur
prising that it should be particularly sensitive
te frost underitspreaontceiiditioiisof growth.
There is no difficulty lu telling at this season
of the year the condition of the germs, and if
tney are kiucu mere can no no iriiit ireui
them. That Is said te be the condition of the
peach germs along the Hudsen and in a
greater iiortlen of the peach-producing sec
tion of the West 11 Is quite pertain that there
will be a very limited quantity of peaches
produced in these, portions of the country the
Lemlug season, and it is pretty safe te say
that there w IU be none from the Hudsen river
country. " The cold weather that destroyed
the Hudsen river crop also foil heavily upon
New Jersoy, although with less destructive
pew or. The buds there have been killed, but
te what extent cannot be determined satis
factorily. Iu Delaware andMeryland the
temperature was Jess destructive, but yet was
net favorable te a full crop of fruit
Frem the Peninsula roperta come te the
offect that se far the peach buds appear te be
uninjured, nnd since December the woather
mere uas ueeu oxceoumgiy laveruuiu ter me
peach crop, as the thermometer has net
reached zero there this winter; aud while
the winter has been cold it has been con
tinuous and the frost remained steadily In
the ground.
Peach tree will net be in bloom until very
late, and according te present indications
there Is little likelihood that there will be
any late frost that will inlure the fruit when
lu bloom. Should the Peninsula produce a

te be the most protltable crop ever gathered.
