The Eastern League Arranges i Schedule A
Club for Baltimore Tlia Umpire Who
Have Been Selected ltecent
Notes of the Field.
Thore was amcetlng of the Eastern Kongue
or base ball clubs at the Glranl beuse, Phila
delphia, en Thursday. The clubs wero rep
rcflouted by the following dolegales : Klch-
mend, Vn., by Mr. Moses and Mr. Simmons;
Norfolk, Vn,, by Mr. Graves nnd Mr. Swnn j
Nntlennl of Wnsltliigten, by Mr. Scanlan ;
Newark, N. J., by Mr. Kline ; Jersey City,
N. J., by Mr. Oiiiiitiilng, and Iincastcr, l'a.,
by Mr. Copland and Mr. Murphy, l'rcsl
dent and Secretary II. It. Dlddlebeck pre
Hided.
It was voted te readmit the Monumental
club, oflJaltlmere, te membership, notwith
standing the pretest insule by Will lain Hnr
nle. of the Baltimore Amurfcnii Association
club. Dr. Massaniore, of Haiti mero, wnsnd
mitted te the meeting as a dclogate from the
Monumental club. Last year tlie Amerlean
association gave its permission te the ootab eotab oetab
lishment of an Eastern I.oague club at Haiti Haiti
mere, and that permission has nover been
withdrawn, Mr. liaruloaleno objecting te the
reorganization of the Monumental club. If
Mr. ISarnle is supported bv the American
nssoclallen, this meve en ihe part of the
Eastern l.eacue mav lead te trouble, but It
is mero than prebable that thore will be a
compromise.
Tlie following wcre appolnted umpires for
the following season : Wes Curry, of Phila
delphia i William Qulnn, of New Yerk ;
V.'illlniu Helland, of Heading, and Geergo
Tnyler, or Wilmington, Del. Tliey will get
$100 a mouth, and pay their own traveling
expenses.
Messrs. Scanlan, llnllnrd nnd Kline, the
schedule committee, werked all the ntlor ntler ntlor
neon and Inte into the night in arranging the
games ler the coming championship season.
It was decided that tlie Southeni clubs con
sisting of the Washington, llaltimore, Ner-
ieik and Kiclimend teams slieuld com cem com
mence the season en April 25, playing a series
of games among themselves i whlle the
ether clubs Jersey city, Newark, Trenten
and Lancaster, having games arranged with
Leagueand American Association clubs will
net begin the championship season till May 1.
Each club has deposited a sum of money In
nroservefund asagunrantee of their liiton liiten liiton
tien of playing the season out.
Notes of the Field.
The nppolntment el Jack Helland, of Ilead
lug, te be an Eastern Lcague umpire, will
glve the best of satisfaction. He is an excel
lent man for the position, as he has a
thorough knowledgo of the game and Is jtcr jtcr
fectly henest. Thore are ethor appointments
by the association which are bad.
The Eastern Lcague shows pluck in put
ting a club in Baltimere even if It does net
meet with the approval of ISnrnie, who wants
te boss that town, because he fears that a
league club may be started thore next sea
son. Jehn T. Murphy will have te de considora censidora considera
blo " hustling " if he wants the Lancaster
club te keep In line with the majority of the
Eastern Lcague nines.
The Lancaster club is disposing of a large
number or season tickets ; none can be had
alter April 1st.
Tlie management of the Lancaster club
will find that Denny Mack will make a far
better manager of their club than a player in
the position for which he is engaged. A
Pittsburgh paper thinks that Denny has
lallt-n low in tlie profession by signing te
play bore, but Mr. Alack is about as sure el
getting his salary as he was when he played
with the Allegheny team. He certainly will
receive mero than'he did whlle acting as an
Eastern Lcague umpire
If the base ball pcople of this city de net
get their heads together they will have an an
ethor war the coming summer, and the only
poeulo benefited will be the players.
The salary for the Eastern Lcacue umpires
Is set nt 8100 per month. If the coming'
season is no better man last year tne um
pires will rccolve but photographs of their
money and will willingly accept trade dollars
at par.
The Yerk peeple had a geed club last sea
son, but the players wero compiled te snb snb
sisten wind j and because the management
lest a few dollars the skating rink will have
n monopoly of thoamuscuicntsnextsummcr.
Heading nnd Harrlsburg can shake hands
with Yerk.
Many geed players aie as yet unsigned
nnd they will be glad te piny at low prices
bofero the season opens.
Willlamspert Intends having a club and an
umpire. Between the two thev will de
feat visiting teams. The latter will get their
guarantee, however, as it is n geed ball
town.
Ed. Green intends te guard second base for
the Willlamspert club.
The Eastern Lcague peeple will de well te
keep their eyes en Herner ami Wnrner, tlie
splendid young battery of the Trcntens.
Nowspaper tickets of admission te the Lan
caster club's games will be very scarce.
Farrar nnd Manning, the two best men el
the Philadelphia lcague club, refuse te sign
because of the Harry Wright salaries.
Reilly, fermerly of tlie Ironsides, will
catch aud de the heavy left hand hitting for
Willlamspert.
Tlie Eastern Lcague needs te offer a re
ward for the Jersey City club.
Seme ofthe people at the head of the ball
associations knew about as much about the
game and players as Barnum's elephants,
but they are intelligent enough te make
meney out of their positions.
A IXAUD CASK.
Frem the New Yolk Clipper.
The case of the blacklisting of Christ
Fulrner, the catcher of the Peoria club, as
also that of Abner Powell, the pitcher or the
same club, is ene of peculiarly harsh treat
ment Fulmer was almost disabled by sero
hands alter playing twenty successlve games
in which he laced very swift pitching, when
he begged for a rest. It was refused him,
nnd he declined te play In ene game,
from Inability te catch. He was then llned
575 Of the amount the club owed him, and,
-m auuiuen, was macKiisteu me uay ueiore
the club disbanded, as also was Powell.
These two players were engaged this season
by the National club, of Washington, after
the club had been Informed, by both Secre
tary Wikeff, and Secretary Yeung, that their
names were en the blacK-list They were
then paid advance money, and afterwards it
was found that tlielr names were recorded en
the black-list. This is a case for the arbitra
tion committee's action, and it should be fa
vorably rcnerted upon, in justice te the Na
tional club!

The murderers or "Cap" Murphy wero
brought Inte the criminal court, New Or
leans, en Wednesday en a motion for u new
trial. Jtulge Ilaker, nfter the conclusion of
th') nrgument, overruled the motion, nnd
proceeded te pass sentence upon the
prisoners. In doing se he stated that the Jury
hed displayed unmerited leniency lit making
up their verdict. He was convinced that
Patrick Ferd and Jehn Murphy had had
only justice ilone them by the unmialllled
venlfct of guilty, and bclievcd that tlie ether
prisoners wcre equally guilty. Jle then
passed sentence of death upen!'ntrlck Ferd
nnd Jehn Murphy, nnd sentenced Judge

was, he would have been nllve te-day.
Judge Ferd, in reply te the same question,
said he had nothing te ask ter himself, but

Peter McTngue, a first mertgage bend-holder

net be confounded with the Vnnderbilt read,
the Seuth Pennsylvania, running te Pitts
