Tuesday Afternoon The entire anorneon
aomlen van Ukon up In the discussion of the
two nuosUem "The Werk of the Hely Spirit
In Quickening Believers," and "The Werk of
the Hely Spirit In Converting Slnnem."
TW first question whs opened and ably ills-
cusaed by Rev. J. rotor, of Manhelm, and
farther olnclilated by Kev. C. M. Aurand, or
Maytown.
The aeeend question was opened by Rev.
Vf. V. Evans, of Columbia, who in the
s absence of Hev. It. A. liolterman, of Dauphin,
was followed by Bev. H. D. llolleway, el
Mlddlctewn. A general discussion of both
questions ensued In which Ilova. Whotsteno,
efliancaster, Cook and Htudelmker, of Hnrris
lmrir. Koiniensnydor and Stall, of Lancaster,
Evana, et Columbia, and ene or two ethers
participated. The discussion via spirited
und edifying.
Tntiday J!veninff. Thore was an audi
ence of evcral hundred present in
the ovenlng te hear n sermon ou
"Christian benovelonco " by Kev. A. II.
Studobaker, of Harrlsburc. The sorvlce was
opened with the singing of n hymn, and this
was followed by the reading of the 8th chap
ter of Paul's second cpistle te the Corinthians
by HOV. 11. O. UOOK. KOV. J. iu lA'suer, "i
Hummelstown, leit In prayer, and attcr
further singing President Eckcrt Introduced
Kev. Studebaker. , ,
Asthe basis of his remarks Rev. Studeba
ker called the attention of his auditors te the
chapter of the Scriptures just read. It touches
that llberality In giving towards the support
et the church Is ene of the Christian graces
and only these who possess this price can
fully reallre the truth of the text " it is mero
blossed te give than te reeoive." If the grnee
of liberality abounded among Christians, the
minister instead of having te beg his poeplo
te glve for the support of the church, would
find them begging him te recelve
their contributions us Paul found the
Macedonians, "Hew that in a trial of
great aflllctien, the nbundance of tlieir
Tey. and their deep' poverty abounded
Inte the riches or their liberality;"
praying with much entreaty tliat he recelve
Ihelr gifts. These who glve grudgingly be
cause they reel it a duty te glve cannot
roallze the pleasure or theso who glve for the
leve or giving. Thogniceor liberality may
be obtained through consecration and prayer,
nnd the acquisition or tills crace should be
Sraved for as devoutly as any ether of the
hfistian graces. In congregations where it
is lacking, the mere taking up a collection
chills the worshippers and they feign te fear
that the Important matters of religion are
being interfered with In the mero doslre te
gctmoney. Christians who are se ready te
retrench their contributions te the TiOrd
should remember that the Lord has many
means of retrenching en them war, iestl iestl iestl
lonce, famine, the locust and the grass-hopper
are some et the scourges He uses te re
mind man or his dependence en Him.
The reverend orator was rather sovere en
thrce classes or peeple te be round In all con
gregations : ilrst, the rich who give liberally
te be Been or men, but net according te the
nbundance or their means; and secondly,
theso who glve nothing en the plea or pov
erty, though they could give by the practice
of self-denlal ; and thirdly, a class or rich and
peer allke, wne seem 10 naveau me religion
knocked out or them the moment a collec
tion la talked et The grace or liberality may
be develeped by exercise aa surely as muscle
may be thus developed, and the preacher
held it te be the duty or every ene te lay by
daily for the uses of the church a certain sum,
in accordance as Ued has prospered him.
Thorearo many who glve but llttle during
their lives and whonrevido liberally for the
church In their wills. Some of these are
canonized, whereas the amount of their
posthumous gift is scarcely enough te pay
the interest en what during Mb they owed
te the Lord. '
The Bpeakcr held that the great need or
the church or the prescnt and future is
money. The spread or the gospel requires it,
the Christ Ian ieople are able te provide it;
the missionaries lrem all lands are calling for
help and our answer te them Is "w e have net
the means te help you.
At the conclusion or Uev. Studcbaker's
discourse, Rev. W. A. Whotsteno was intro
duced anil speke at seme length or Uie sacri
fices the gilts required by the Lord under
the old dispensation from the time of Abel
te the coming of Christ, who, under the new
dispensation, gave Himself te save slnners,
while Ills disciples gave up everything te
turtlier His kingdom. The duty et sacrificing
something, of giving te the Lord is a duty
enjoined at the beginning and continued
through all time ; and Christians can no
mero shirk this duty than they can the faith
nnd tlioprayers enjoined en them. The gift
ay be great or little according te theclreum-
nces of the giver. Oed Judges net by
what we glve, but what we keep. The
speaker ventured the assertion that there is
net a congregation In this or ethor cities that
does net spend mero money In the skating
rinks thau for the cause of home or foreign
missions,

Wednesday Morning. After devotional ex ex
orcises, led by Rev. J. Fishbum, el Millers
burg, the question or "Hew te get scholars
Inte the Sunday fechoel ?" was discussed by
Rev. M. P. Heckor, or Stoclteu, His eInts
were : 1st. Te have the pastor deeply inter
ested in the work; 2d. A superintendent af
fable, attractive and earnest; 3d. Teachers
efficient, punctual and willing te work out
side tbe school as well as Inside ; -ltl). Church
members having the interest of the school at
heart ; 6th. Missionary work among non-attending
children; Cth. Comfortable and at
tractive school rooms ; and 7th. Geed school
Htippiies ei iioeks, charts, pictures, etc.
Rev. C. Roimeusnyder followed with a
general endorsement of Rev. Hockor'spropo Heckor'spropo Hocker'spropo
sitlon. JIe added that there wero in the
United States 7,000,000 children who did net
attend the Sunday schools. Ministers,
superintendents and teachers should go out
among the homes of these children and
gather them iu. Anether means is the agita
tion of Sunday school work in the com
munity, and holding out inducements ler
Iiarents te attend the schools. Rev. Reimen Reimen
snyder related sereral instances in which
flourishing schools had been built up by
theso means iu communities where before
thore wero no schools.
Mr. Reehling, a layman, followed witli his
exporience In building up schools by the aid
of geed music and district conventions.
Rev. llolleway Raid that he did must et his
church work through committees, each or
wmen nau certain uemieu uuties te poriertn.
The Sunday school committee was expected
te go out amenc the ieeple, especially theso
whose chlldre: i net attend the Sunday
school, and ascertau. lrelrcumstauces, and
If they need aid te purchase clothing for
their children te assist thorn.
"Hew te keep scholars iu the Sunday
school T" was next discussed. Rev. J. II.
Leeser said the subject was se closely con
nected wtth the preceding ene that many or
the same arguments used would apply te
both questions. Much depends en the con
dition or the school ; en the superintendent,
teachers and school surroundings, ir these
be attractive and inviting thore Is no trouble
In keeping the scholars. It Is with the Sun
day ocheolas it is with our homes ; seme are
se delightful that children de net want te
be anywhore else and seme se uupleasant
that they would rather be anywhore else. He
favored geed music, anumboref instruments
organs, horns, llute, etc., when they can be
had. Presents te the pupils had a geed eilect.
Above all the superintendent should be
aUable and wise. The teachers should be apt
te teach gentle, kind and impartial. They
should be familiar with the lessens for this
purpose, preparing themselves befere hand.
The dlfliculty or getting geed teachers shows
the necessity of reducing the number or
classes In the school and Increasing the bIze
of the daises.
Revs. Relmensuyder, llolleway, Whet
stone, Evans and Cook, followed in brier
addresses.
A vote of thanks was oxtended teSL Jehn's
church for the cntertalumcnt of the confer
once. A prayer was oflerod by Rev. Reimon Reimen
suyder and the coufcrenco adjourned sine

The heavy fall et snow last night, en lop of
that which previously covered the ground,
makes it very necessary for the comfort of
pedestrians and the safety of property
that the snow should 1k removed from the
sldewalks, and that the gutters, sewers and
ether water-courses should le kept open. A
