On thnt occasion n Blable adjoining the ene

the flames spreading te the academy. It was

but tlie promptness villi which tlie ilrciucn

The burned atable wns alxmt "5 feet In

The building is totally destroyed, but n long

A short titne before the flre abeve men

Later snioke was discovered Issuing from

In the back part of the premises. The lloor lleor lloer

smeke, came from under the fleer Insidothe
building. This flooring was also tern up,
and the discovery wns made that the
smeke came up through a partition from the
room below. A further examination showed
that the incendiary had broken Inte the cellar
nnd placed in the joists seme old clothing,
saturated with coal oil. Tliese rags had
burned slowly and falled te de any serious

Frem the Rambler.
A famous Kurepean prima denna, uhe
visited this ceuntrj- net many years age, was
exceedingly quiet in her tastes and her man
nor of living, and en arriving en our shores
proceeded with her suite of ene her maid maid
te ene of the best and most oxclusive hotels
of New Yerk. With a fancy for something
of a feast after her operatic performance, alie
determined te taste the New Yerk oysters of
xvhlch she had heard se much In praise.
AVhcn 'he jkj: f. uiance was ever the song seng
stress returned at ence te her apartments at
her hotel and summoned a servant In the
customary manner. The waller seen n
pearcd, and home oysters were ordered.
Just here it may be said that the maid re
tired at ence te her own room with a hcad hcad
nche, se the eysteis were ordered for only
ene. "Hew many will you have?" asked
the waiter. "Hew many!" said the lady, at
the same tlme thinking, "I feel as if I could
eat a thousand, I am se hungry," but only ad
dedwith a mnnner indicating that she had
lU'ed en oysters all her Hie "you may
bring n hundred !" Slie noticed en replying
that a purprised expression covered the fnce
of the servant, about which she only men
tally questioned, and took up a foreign paper
xvhlle the man wns leaving the room. Some
tlme passed, the lady wondering at the delay
when a knock came utthe deer nnd in walked
flve men bearing trays half filled with plates
containing eysters en the half-shell, lemons,
crackers, water, napkins, etc, A single
glanceat the first trav explained le the lady
the surprise she hnd noticed en tl.e face of
the servant who had answered her bell ; but
net n question was asked nor a venl speken.
The plates, ghis-.es, eta, were arranged en
the various tables In the room, and the lady
xvas left nlone with her feast. She real
ized that that she had unwittingly
played a Joke upon herself which she
determined no ene In the hotel should knew.
Her feast ended, and she wondered hew in the
world she could dispese of the dozens of great
oysters left thcre untouched. In a moment
mere she opened the window, and, ene by ene
took the oysters at the end of her fork and
threw them out as far as she could, in idl di
rections, until each shell was emptied. An An
other knock was lieard, nnd answered. The
waiters ngain entered, found the lady alene at
the table, reading as bofero, and net a vostige
of an oyster in sight. The leek of surprise
which met the lady as she glnnced at the faces
of the servants, xvas aiuple compensation in
every resiwct for the mistake she had made.
She has ohen told the story since, and assures
her friends she can nuver forget nor cease te
enjoy her first feast of New Yerk oysters
A Patent Car-Starter.
On Tuesday a jvitent, Ne. 311,027, was
lssued te A liriu. It. Witmer, of Safe Harber,
fern car-starter. This invention is an im
provement en a patent obtained by him a
few years age, in which by means of
stationary clutches attached te the oxle nnd
shifting clutches fixed te a ceiled spring and
a shifting frame, the momentum of the car
xvas accumulated and held te aid in starting
the car or assisting te ascend n grnde. The
present improvement consists in dividing n
sleove surrounding the nxle nnd about which
the spring Is ceiled Inte two sections con
nected by interlocking arms xvhich inove
back and forth between each ether. One of
the sleove ioetlens has a clutch firmly
attached te It, whilst the ether has ene con
nected with it by means of a screw threaded
sloeve, the play orthe interlocking arms and
the length of the threaded sleove limiting
the amount of strain which can be put upon
the coiled spring. ThW indent was obtained
through Win.It. Gerhart. s niclter or patents,
