maaoise the nun.
Mr. MIddloten, superintendent of the mill,
who was telephoned ferte tlie Slsvens heue,
where be beards, reached the scene about 3:15
a. in. In a hack which fortunately was
at the hotel deer, having Juit cotne
in from the train. Mr. Hewell, chief
of the fire department, arrived seen after him
and each took command at different extremi
ties of the mill, directing their energies te
keep up the reef which would have carried
with it the destruction of the mill. If It had
fallen. The carpenter; shop was left te burn
out, and ene flre cngiiie was shut off, as it di
minished the water he that the htreatns could
net reach the root The two hese were kept
steadily playing en the girders and rafters,
the reef between them being allowed te burn
out. There was a momentary diversion
when the fire from tlie carpenter
shops extended with an adjacent shed,
but the protection of the rafters
was the main effort until alxnit five
o'clock, when the flre was under control and
the building and machinery saved with only
damage of conseauence te the reef. This
will probably need te be Teplnced.
AMOUNT OP THE LOS.
The carponter shop nmstjbe rebuilt, enlv
the walls being left standing. The tools,
valuable rolling mill patterns and materials
in the shop building were of ceurse con
sumed. The damage Is net yet estimated,
but is net expected te reach f5,WX. It is fully
rerered bv insurance en the buildluir for
$6,000 and en the machinery for J12.U00 in
seven cempantce,iu which the mill is insured
altogether for (35,000.
WHAT CAUSED THE Flllli
The erigtn of the flre is entirely unknot n.
As before stated there was no flre In the shot)
and it was locked np. It faces the railroad,
bnt has n slate .root Moreover, the flre
burned out from the inside, as the outslde
of the deer jambs en the mill side
are net scorched. There was a small
fire of bituminous coal In the mill
against the brick wall dividing it from
the carpenter shop. This was under the clay
mixing trough and intended te keep the clay
warm. It. was carefully closed In en allsidcs
and it is net believed that it could have been
the origin of the lire.
There is a possibility that a tramp found
his way into the shop and started thellre
in undertaking te warm himself; though
there is no ground for this suspicion sae the
inability te etherwise account for the fact
that the fire started in the shop, and at
se late an hour in tlie night. Any
spark possibly left In It from the even
ing bofero would have disclosed Itself before
morning.
There is also the possibility that a sjiark
from a passing cngine blew in through a
broken w indew pane, though the night was
net a very windy ene, the direction
of the breoie being from the north
west. The mill is being cleared of the debris of
the wreck and will be ready for work as seen
as the adjusters have settled the less en Mon
day. There is net believed te be any serious
damage te the machinery, which only Buf
fers Ireui the water that lias left it covered
withice. The boilers hae been filled up te
prevent damage from the soaking of the
furnaces.
The flre was very intelligently managed bv
Chief Engineer Hewell, who hasshewn hint
self once mere te be the right man in the
right place.
