the vhelern In Londen In 1834, the viru-
' tawe of whleh wm greatly aggravated by
- Klf a Tladaet through an old burial
ground, and the plague 7n Medena In 1828.
which resulted from disturbing the ground
where wietlme of the plague had been
burled 800 year before.
In alltbat nee been eald It U wamd
that earth burial baa been aa thorough
aatf aatiafaetery aa poaaible. In tlmeeef
nlJcmlr- however, hew seldom la this
'5e ease. Hew frequently i It supMfieial
lyand laperfeetly performed, thus offering
the disease germs the most favorable
eoBdltiena for apesdy develepement and
gopagatlen, aa converting the oemetcry
te rery hotbed of contagion.
There la one oendltlon, however, readily
producible at almost any paint where man
baa hla abode, whleh no living organism
has been found te withstand ; and that
condition la a tomperature of from 800 te
1,900 degrees centigrade, the range of
temperature at whleh, In the various
kinds of apparatus new In use, cremation
is effected.
Ne disease germ, it Is sate te say, has
ever been known te pass through the
orematery fires and survive te propagate
its ipeeiea or te serve as the carrier of
disease. The orematery is, se fares known
the only never-falling gormleide. Hen
well this truth was understood by the wise
Pepe Clement VI, is shown by the feet
that during the relen of the "Black
Death " at Avignon, then the papal resi
dence, nnd whleh swept away 00,000 of the
inhabitants of that fair city, bis holiness
eansed his palaoe te be surrounded by a
wall of flre. whleh was kept burning hlsh
both night and day. Clement the Wise
believed In the germ theory of disease,
and in destroying the germs.
It we still held te the old theory that
these various forms of zjmotle contagion,
whether epidemic or endemte, are pro
duced and propagated by ohemice. mole
cular action, then it Is equally true that
the ail purifying flre Is the only known
means by which that chemical action can
effectually and unfailingly arrested, and
the poisonous compound redueed te Us
simple constituents and rendered in
nocuous. And, if there were no epidemics of con
tagion coming te us from without, let It
be remembered that about 63 per eent, of
11 the deaths reported In our vital statls
ties are occasioned by acute aymotie
contagion, from whleh the crematory is the
only reliable safeguard.
Instead, therefore, of thrusting our
beloved dead into a damp, dark hole in the
ground, there in the companionship of
loathsome micreblan organisms te putrefy,
and thence te send forth the poisonous
and deadly exhalations and emanations of
the grave te seize upon the tenderly
ministering survivors, and drag them into
the gloomy caverns where disease and
death held cirnlval, let us purify the
material of their bodies from every defil
tag and corrupting ageney. and translate
them, deoerouRly and reverentially, but
expeditiously, into the elements or all new
and beauteous life.
Ner should we step with the ioein era-
tlen of our own kindred dead. Let us par
form the like gracious offleo for the bodies
ei allviotimsef disease brought en ship
board into our ports, especially for ail
.... ot.e tt din fnA a11abi .bah .aMHll
pox, and ohelera, and every ether form of
acute zymotie oentaRion. And let us con
sign te the same all-purifying fire what
ever of dead matter has become the nidus
or carrier of like disease.
Let our mnnlelpal authorities establish
a orematery at every quarantine station.
and in oenneotion with every public
nespitai ana every potter's aew.
The potter's field of almost every city
of the land Is a dlsgraoe te olvillzatien and
a pest bed in the community, and many
of the mero reputable churebyards and
eemeteries are little better. Beautiful and
park-like as they are without, within they
are "full of retteunesss and dead men's
bones."
Let our oeunty commissioners erect a
crematory in conneetion with every alms
house and penitentiary.
Let the state de the same in oenneotion
with state prisons and asylums.
Let the national government make like
prevision in oenneotion with the army,
navy, and marine hospitals and asylums
under its oeutrol.
But we would net atop here. All the
garbage of our great cities, with mueh of
the refuse that new gees Inte the cowers
te ledge and fester under tbe wharves and
en the shores of uur else fair harbors and
rivers, aye, the entire sowerago cf our
cities, should be cremated by an approved
regenerated process, by means of which
all the volatile produeta of tbe cembus
tien may be reburned and purified before
being liberated. Thus may our land be be be
oeme indeed as it should be, "the land of
the living,' no longer given ever te be the
"valley et the shadow et death."
