LaDghlDg at American Fears.
The report of General Sheridan, in
whieh he points out the inadequacy of the
United States coast and harbor defenses,
has attraetcd a great deal of attention in
England. The Conservatives find in it a
justification for the oatery whieh they
have made against the defenseless oendition
or .England's seaboard, and say that it is
time the English government took warning
when even an isolated and peaceful
country like the United States is becoming
alive te the danger of invasion. The St
Jamti' Gaulle treats the matter in a vein
of saroastie consolation. It finds oemfott
in the faet that England is net alone in her
fears of foreign fees, aud hopes that the
"battle of Dorking," if it is ever te be
fought, will be fought iu Yankeeland, It
proffers Its sympathy te Amorlea in her
cipeeted troubles, and suggests that
England and Amorlea both arrange with
some enterprising contractor te remedy
matters and guarantee tueir safety. This,
It says, would simplify matters, cave
expocse, and at the same time promote
International amity.
