We notiee the tatement, and we have reason te believe that It la oerreot, that oavenee pepper mixed with tha proper quantity of oil, rubbed ever the harness, will effeetaally proteet it against the gnaw leg of rata, which we have known te vir tually destroy it when these "vicious rodents are in a partial state of starvation, which they frequently are in severe weather. The mixture should be com posed of ene eunce of oayenne te a quart of oil. It is also stated that an ounce of aloes te ene gallon of oil will afford the same protection, Our own remedy, hew ever, has uniformly been and we have never known it te fail te hang tbe har ness high enough up against a smooth partition without admitting of any means of access te it. But as some people are careleps in deiDg this, tbe red pepper or the aloeB and oil remedy bad better be adopted, and the harness eau also be hung up and thus ruake sure of its Bafety. A friend at our elbow says that a wash of oarbello aeid is a certain protection. CABBAGE FOIl WIHTEn TJ8E. Tbe time is at band when the putting up of our winter cabbage will have te take plaoe. There are several modes which are purmed te perserve it in geed eendi- tien through the winter up te April. Tbe best ene that we have tried is te take the flabbage and Btaud it In.' rows just as it grew, close together, mixing the soil among tbe roots, oevor it evor with straw or oernfodder, and ever the whole te orcet a temporary protection. This is dene by forming a shed reef, starting from a beard fenee or stene wall, and plant at the lewer end two pests, laying en tbe top bean poles, and ever this either beards or corn fodder te turn oil tbe rain. Tbe lower end, wbere the opening should be, ought te have a nerthern exposure, an In that oase there will be no danger that tbe ehange of temperature will affeet the soundness of tbe cabbage. We have uniformly kept our oabbage by this method until late la the spring en mero than ene occasion till the end of April. Berne people place the cabbage with tbe bead down, the better te proteet it against the admission of water ; but we nover suffer from thia in tbe slightest degree ueriBLa WITHOUT SIIOES. When a few years age was started an argument in favor of usmg tbe boree in all the wetk for whieh he is required, ever hard reeds and soft reads, in the solid beds of city streets, as well as the dirt highways of tbe country, without shoes, we took it upon ourselvcs te say that, uetwitbstand. iug all the appareut statement of faets then se prominently adduced, we dissented in tete from the grounds assumed. Well, three or four years since that date have new passed, but we bave received no additional proofs that there was any real foundation for the original statement, and there appears no diminution in the general use of the horseshoe, even in tbe very contre where the reform was began. It may he argued in this, as iu many ether aases, that nature baa provided se and se, and that any departure therefrem Dy", the usages of tbe community cannot be sua tained as an established praotice with pre fit as a permanent system. Be this as .it may, however, art haB produeed remark able changes evor nature, and tbe result of it has been se important and remarkable as te dissipate every idea of encroachment upon tbe only genuine mode of nature's way of conducting matters and things. The unshed borse of the wilderness would be badly off indeed if it were oeiitinued te go unshed, new that it is discovered that Its great value can be realized only because we bave ignored nature and permitted art te oxcrcise its inventive powers. SCIENCE IN FATtMINO. As te the question of the value (-of sei once and common sense in the manage ment of the farm, we de net think that the former has done as mueh for agricul ture as some of Ub votaries olalm'fer it. If we bad te cheese between what is some times called solentille agriculture and that system of farming whieh is the rjlsult of daily and dear bought experienoe through perhaps a thousand years, it would net take long te deoide wbleh side we should be en. There is nothing te us se dear and valuable as praotieal oemmon sense. At the Bame time we have no desire te ignore our obligatiena te praellcal lolence. for many valuablehlnta and truths have dene mueh te advance agricultural progress. Our only wonder is thr.t soienee has done se mueh as it has, net that it should have mere, bb a oritleal oetsmporary thinks. The men of soienoo these who are con tinually laboring te gather new facts for us, and who try te lay bare tbe laws of nature te our oemmon understanding are very few. Most of them, for the love of seience, devote the labor of their lives for a meagre compensation. In busi ness they might have been wealthy. In science they rarely make anything. Their labors are mostly free gifts te us. Let them go en and Und out the truths of nature. Let na net eavll that they de net eare te turn their own truths into money. It Is for us te de that. Let thorn glve us tools if they like, but the praotieal culti vation of the soil is our work te de, and if we suceeed in that te our beat satisfaction we sball be accomplishing our share of the important toil befere us. blacxberut anewiKO.. The crop of this season's blaekberries has never been surpassed, and the suoeesa in growing them, being almost annually assured, has induecd many persona te add this fruit te their general orep of fruits. There is one feature, however, that would add greatly te tbe popularity of the black berry, in addition te its size that is, net te gather the fruit befere it is properly matured. It is net often remembered that the berry being black isnoeertain evidence that it is ripe, though it must be black te be ripe. The best and we may say the only preper way te judge of its porfeet maturity la te jar the canes, and whatever portion of the fruit falls Is known te be fully ripe, and then It is soareely surpassed in exoellenee by any ether berry. The season tee of the blaok blaek berry ia lamentably brief, net being ever three weens, at the end of which tlma. say the first or second week in August, it beoemen tasteless asd worthless, though the appearanee of tbe fruit may be aa black and tempting as ever. In setting out a plantation of the blaekberry tbe new weed should be always taken and topped te within six lnehes of tbe ground. If set out in the autumn they should be covered the first winter. The canes should stand about four feet apart each way, and jcept periecuy eiear ei weeaa anu grass. About the first week in July the new branches from the main stem should be olipped mero or less, oeoordinrj te their size, and the main stem shortened te about four feet. Three canes te a hill are enough,! but each grower must be the judge of what is proper te be dene as he progresses. We would recommend heavy mnlehlng of the canes, as we have always found that this fruit does best In n moist, rlobseu. Mark Twain Has a KelapM. Mr. Hark Twain, of Conneetlout,. and Mr. Geerge W. This pseullar fowl bas been watehed closely and be has been seen te go en tbe nest daily, oeme off cackling and there was the egg. Ne hen was ever seen about the nest. This fowl has aroused the admiration of our soul, and is an example worthy of the emulation of the husbandman. He has seen the toils and struggles of the overwerkod and greally oppressed hens and has ceme te their resone and helped them te supply the demand new seriously felt in commer cial clreles and at the bearding houses. He cares nothing for a protective tariff, a tariff for revenue only, or free trade ;' his only desire is te meet the demands for home consumption and te' Bee that the Christmas neg is net wanting.
