beast died at the headquarters of the great
showman, Lehigh avenue and Edgement
streets, Philadelphia, en Friday morning.
The body has been snipped te Dr. Hey d,
of Culoage, where it will in all probability
be set up In the Aoademy of natural
solenoes. About ene week age Mr. Adam
Forepaugh oenoolred the idea of training
thosaerod elephant. Uufertunately he
seleoted a cold, wintry day for the per
formance. The olephaut showed sueh
wonderful sagacity that his trainer failed
te note the llightef time, nnd It was nearly
dark befere he allowed "Light of Asia"
te return te his stall. The koepor care
lessly left the window open, aud all night
long n oeld blast blew upon the saercd
beast. The next day the "Light of
Asia" was taken seriously 111, but Mr.
Forepaugh considered himself equal te the
emergency, and he immediately begau ad
ministering what he considered tbe proper
medieines. The white elephant grew
worse day by 'day, however, and it was
discovered that he vias geffering from lung
fever.
About 9 o'elook Friday morning the
sacred beast breathed hia last. The
attendants say that the companion ele
phant of the " Light of Asia,' upon see
ing her friend fall ever dead, walked up te
him and ondearorod te ralse him up with
ber truuk. Failing in this, she then placed
her front feet en the wblta elephant's
side and pressed upon it several times,
evidently for the purpose of proving be
yond a doubt that life wasoxtlnet. She
then walked slowly away and began te
bellow most pitifully. The ether elephants
seen took np the ery, and Reeks, ene of
the largest of the trained elephants, beat
his trunk against the brlek walls of hia
stall and endeavored te break loeso. lie
gave ene tremendous lunge forward in the
effort te break the heavy iron ehaln that
encircled bis right foreleg, nnd pulled his
