Tba Deed m Deep Mystery Several Theories
Advanced Det Nena te hriew That
lie Was lniane.
Rev. Henry 8. Williamson, rector of
St. Paul' Episcopal ohureh In Trenten,
N. J., did net appear at breakfast at Mr.
Murphy's West End bearding beuse,
where be took bis meals, Thursday morn
loc ; but llttle wan thought of his absence,
although he wan neon several times "Wed
nesday evenlng -walking along BUte Btreet
at a fast gait nnd swieglng bis arms,
About half-past 10 Thursday morning two
boys walked down the lane between the
residenee of William Henry Rawle and
General DioklnseD, near the railroad, off
West State stroet, where they saw a man
lying en the ground near a tree. When
they drew near they discovered the man
was dead and oevored with bleed. They
at ence ran for help.' The body was found
te be that of Sir. Williamson.
He was lying ou the ground, with a
bullet wennd en the right frontal bone:
from which braius and bleed had oezea
out and coagulated. He were a pair of
spectacles and they were bospatterod with
bleed. His eyca wero oeagostcd. bleed
bad been oeziug from the nose and ene of
bis cuffs waH rprinklcd with bleed. By
his side en the ureund was u brand new
ivory-hendled Smith ft Wessen revelver.
Only ene chamber was emptied, showing
that but ene shot had been fired. The
pistol bad evidently been held olese te the
forehead, as there was bleed en the muz
zle and barrel and down towards the ham.
mer. The deceased wen drcEsed in dark
o'ethes and wero a dark diagonal overcoat,
He t ad en n high cut clerical vest and a
high, Kotneu oellar. On his vest was a
Delta Phi pin, whleh he had worn ever
sincn he graduated from Princeton college,
in 1870.
In one of the pockets were found two
tealed letters. The ene was addressed te
Jehn Tattcisall, treasurer of St. Paul's
church, and was marked "strictly prlvate"
in the oerner, TLe ethor letter was di.
rceted te James O. Tayler, undertaker,
and wan marked "private" in capital let let
ters. On his table in his room at Mrs.
Jay's, at the corner of Willow and West
State streets, wcre found a number of
notes directed te various friende. They
were all open nnd uuBealcd with ene ex
ception. A new bes of cartridges was
also found en the table. The cover was
oil the box and just tlve cartridges bed
been removed. Everything else about the
room seemed te have been left in erder.
.Mr. Williamson was a young man, about
twenty six cars old. lie is a son of cx cx
CuanccIIer Williamson, of Elizabeth, and
a nephew of Chief Justlce Ucaslcy, of
Trenten. He came te Trenten about two
years age, just alter his admission te tbe
Eplsoepal ministry. He was made assist
ant rector of St. Michael's church under
Dr. JNcllsen and conducted the sorvieos in
the chapel connected with the parish, en
Clinten avenue. Last spring he took
charge of St. Paul's church, near tbe
corner of Centre and Federal streets.
He was popular in hU parish and in
soelety. Ne cause has been discovered for
the aet. Mr, Williamson was very jovial
and generally very talkative He bad a
habit, howevcr, of coming te the table
occasionally and refraining entirely from
conversation. He also had a habit of pass
iug his friends en the street without rco rce rco
egniziug them. He had been in particu
larly geed spirits of late, as he was very
mueh elated ever Cleveland's olcctlen.
He was heard in bis room at Mrs. Jay's
about e'even o'elook Wednesday night.
Thursday morning early the chambermaid
kuecked at his deer. The deer was ajar.
Leeking iu nnd seeing the blinds down she
supposed Mr. Williamson was still aslcep.
About ten o'elook she went again te the
deer. Tbe blinds were still down and Mr.
Williamson was net in. The bed showed
sigh's of an oceupaut. but it was impossi
ble te tell bow long it bad been occupied.
On the table with the letters was a
twenty flve cent pieei te pay for the
postage.
Thore wero no fluaueial troubles that
could have affeeted Mr. Williamson. He
made a deposit only Wednesday in tbe
Michanics'-Uank. It is net known that
thore was any love affair that oeuld have
led te the deed. In fact, as yet the oui eui oui
cide is a deep mystery. When the body
was found it was still warm, indicating
that death had oceurrod only a few hours
before. Mr. Williamson probably left
the heuse early Thursday morning and
committed Buicide about seven o'clock.
The letter en the body direetcd te Mr.
Tayler, the undertaker, requested that
gentleman te take charge of the funeral.
In the letter Mr. Williamson fiaid be
would like te be buried as seen as pessl.
bio. He desired a let te be ptecutcd in
Greenwood cemetery, in that city. He
would like te be buried in the remote
southeast corner of the oimetery, or as
nearthere as possible. He desired the
oefiln te be very plain. Tbe words " very
plain " were underscored. He simply
desired his initials " H. S. W." and
" Died Novcmbe? 13, 1881," placed en the
cefUn. He made prevision in tbe letter
for any expenses Mr. Tayler might incur.
He requested that no words wbatevcr be
said an his funeral.
In hla lettcr te Treasurer Tattersall,
Williamson gives a rninute statement of
the affairs of St. Paul's chureb. He bad
charge of tbe funds along with Mr. Tatter,
sail. He rendered a statoment and drew
the balance. He tells tba treasurer that
he will find the surplus deposited in the
Mechanics' bank and authorizes him te
draw it out. He made n deposit iu tbe
bank Wednesday. He also told Tattersall
that tbere was seme salary due htm from
the church. If the check he gave Tayler
and the meney that would ba found in bis
olethes were net sufficient te pay his
funeral expenses, the balance was te be
paid Tayler out of bis salary. In h'a
clothes were found fifteen dollars. The
body still remains in the mergue. Ne
inauest will be held, as Chief Justloe
Beaslcy requested there should be none
and the county physician said it was net
nce3S8ary. That he had a right te de,
under a statute passed by a recent Legisla
ture. Ne word has yet been received from ex
Chancellor Williamson, although he bad
been telegraphed te ropeatedly. It Is be
1 loved tbe ex-chancellor went from Eliza
both te Freehold te attend tba Monmouth
battle celebratien, but a message sent te
Freehold has met with no response. Chief
Justlce Beasloy says that despite the
strong desire of the deceased te be burled
br tbe undertaker In a cemetery here,
tbe family will probably take the remains
te Elizabeth, All sorts of theories are
current respecting the oause of tbe
sulelde, but nene of them are reliable.
Tbe most general accepted theery Is that
young Williamson did net like his prefes
sien. no nau said a numeer ei times mac
the ministry was distasteful te him. Some
of hla friends say be was net orthodox of
late ana was depressed occauee no
preached what he did net bolieve.
There is geed authority for tbe state
ment that Williamson entered the ministry
at bis father's request and almost oem maud
He opposed the idea for seme tlme and.it
is mild that tbe dlsllke te his profession
haa caused coldness between father and
en, ie that they have net spoken for seme
time. It Is also stated that ou Wednesday
Williamson reeelved a letter from his
father that agitated him considerably.
That the auielde was premediatcd is evi
dent. Williamson was with seme friends
until after 10 o'elook en Wednesday night.
Then he went te bis room. He undoubt
edly spent most of tbe night writing the
letters, which wero written in a plain
hand and betrayed no particular agitation.
The mlnute oharaetor of bis diroetlons
show a olear mind, and a steady norve.
'I he city has net been se exelted ever any
local event for years. Many of Mr. Wil
liamson's friends of both sexes have visited
the morgue.
