Judge Barrett, in the sujirotne court,
Brooklyn, Wednesdny Rrnnted a writ of
habeas corpus In the opllcatlen of II. W.
Leenard ler the relcace of Charles E.
Rlehnrds, oenflned In Or. J. W. llaretew'n
Etlvate nBylura for the ibsane at Tlushing,
. I. In his' petition Mr. Leenard says
that Mr. RIehardR Is restralced from his
liberty and was committed without pro
cess. The writ was made rctitrnahle en
November 1, at 10 n. tn. Mr. Leenard is
the lawyer who sccured the release of Mrs.
Wiley,1 who was cenflned in the same asy
lum. It is the same institution in which
Henry, Frousa Coepar was a prisoner and is
known as Bauford Hall. '
The case of Charles E. Richards is one
of special Interest. He is a handseme
man, between thlrty-flve and forty years
of age, eyer six feet tall, with sandy
muRtaebe and beard. He has been in the
asylum slnce 1674, and though it is
elalmcd that he is perfectly oane be has
been kept in Belltary confinement. He
ceme from ene of tbe eldest and most
respected families of Philadelphia His
father was Benjamin W. Richards, who
was mayor of Philadelphia lu years cone
by. His mother was a Bister of Lord
Dandas, an carl of Soetland, who came te
this country and established a businesa In
Philadelphia. His place was en the
cerner of Chestnut and Fourteenth streets;
and was known throughout tbe state.
Lord Dandas never returned te (Gotland,
bat accumulated a fortune and evidently
died Id the Quaker city. Bofero his death
his sister was1 married te Benjamin W.
Richards, a representative of ene of the
eldest families in tbe state Mr. Rich
ards was very wealthy and owned a large
portion of the property whleh new een.
stitutes Fairmount park. This property
he subsequently sold te the elty. He had
V four children, Benjamin W,, Jr., Selina,
Heward and Charles E. Heward Ktoa Ktea
ards is a prominent lawyer in Philadelphia
and was married te Miss Maye, n nlece of
Qen. Scott. The only daughter, Selina, Is
the wifoef Qen. R. Lawrence. A Rontlo Rentlo Rontle
man who has known the family intlmately
for thirty years said te n World reporter
Thursday :
" Charley was a tall, handseme bloude
and ene et the most jovial fellows I ever
knew. He never, during all the tlme that
I associated with him, showed any syrap
tomsef insanity. The last tlme 1 saw
him wae, I think, in 1800. I did net
knew what had beceme of htm until the
ether day, when I was told that he was in
an asylum. I was amazed. I knew bis
family well. Charley and his mother, who
was a sister of Lord DundaB, spent a
number of years In Paris. It was thore
that Mrs. Richards finally died. Mr.
Richards died hi Philadelphia. He left
considerable property, which was dlvided
among his children. Charley was a
bachelor and spent a portion of his time
in Paris and this elty. His brother, I
believe, considered him eomewbat wild,
lie had rooms in this elty. When the
war broke out I enlisted and Charley
served in the elty regiment which went
out from Philadelphia This body was
composed et a number of woll-to-de young
gentlemen, all et whom were tall, well
built fellows. AbI have said, I did net
knew that ha was in an iusane asylum
until the ether day."
Mr Leenard says that nl3 attention was
called te the oase by persons who were
connected with the asylum. Miss
Addie Price, who was a uurse in the Insti
tution for four months, first speke te him
of Mr. Richards. She said that she bo be
lieved him perfeetly sane. Mrs. Henrietta
Wiley, whose release from the asylum he
seeured en September 7, said that she saw
Mr. Richards thcre. He always acted like
a perfect gentleman nnd never showed
auy symptoms of insanity. Mr. Leenard
. says that be also leceived information from
ether sources which go te show that the
man is npjustly restrained of his liberty.
Ten years age, he says Riebards quarreled
with bis brother in the law office in Phila
delphia. Shortly after that he was
brought te this city and thence taken te
Flushing under the pretence te soe a
friend. He was placed lu Dr. Barstow's
asylum without a legal commitment, aa it
Is claimed. Twloe he attempted te ctoipe
but each time he was eaptured befere he
could get away from the village. Dr. Bar Bar
stew, Mr. Leenard Bays, is receiving $45 a
week for koeping Mr. Richards. As far
as the lawyer ean learn there is no motive
for depriving Mr. Riehards of his free
uem. The unfottunate man is worth
$35,000 or mere, which was Iefthlm by his
fatber. The money is invested in real
estate and stocks,

Proceed with the'saving nnd storing of
the remaining crops. Leeks should be
placed closely in a narrow treneh eight
inehes de'ep and covered when the weather
gets quite cold. Cabbage may be planted
closely in a furrow, but a maeh simpler
plan is te set them, heads downward,
where water will net lie and cover with
leaves or straw, gradually oeoordlna as the
weather gets colder. Scatter seme brush
ever the whole te keep the straw In plaoe.
There are various ways of treating odery,
bat the usual method is te earth it up
where it grows nearly te the top and te
cover with straw' or litter en the ap.
proaeh of 6evere weather. It is very
important' that all winter vegetables
should be covered gradually as we often
have spells of warm weather quite
late in the', season when a close,
heavy oevorlng would be certain te
ret the plants! Pita out-doers should be
ventilated by means of a tile or a tuft of
straw projecting abeve the earth coveting.
The early varieties of cabbage sewn in
September will new be ready te plant out,
They require much tnore fertilizer than
late oabbage as, we repeat, most early
crops de. Somepooplo, plant thorn en the
sides of farrews sloping northward and
ethors southward, se that it may be as
sumed the point is of no importance. It
is well te plant them rather closely as
they are often badly damaged by no open
winter. They should also 1)3 planted
deeply as Otherwise the frost would split
the atoms. There Is no denbt thatspinaeh
would be benefitted by a slight iroteetiou
with straw orbenghB, but It usually comes
out 'well enough in spring without any.
Seed onions should be protcetcd, but the
sets need none ' previded they were com
pletely covered with earth at planting
time. Bean poles should be removed and
the garden cleared of rubbish of all kinds
before winter sets In. Parsnips and sal
sify are quite hardy, -but -nevertheless
they should be lifted and stered out-doers.
When lifted they will spoil if net "oevored,
as a protection from sun and frost, or
ratber the sudden changes of temperature
caused thereby.
