The death of one of the most cultivated,
brilliant, and famous doctors In Connecticut
is hourly looked for at the New Uaven
hospital. Tbe patient is Dr. Jeseph J.
Harry, wbe was born in Ireland In 1822
lie was graduated in Dublin aud practiced
ou the "lever ships" that came into New
Yerk in 1817. Ue went te California in
tbe geld excitement and triad e money

extravagaut, aud as riebes accumulated he
took te drink. Odd aud unreasonable no
ene could de anything with him. and.
finally, he lest everything through his
appotite for rum. He eame te New Hat en

Und it, he went te New Yerk, took a
oeutso nt the University, and
procured n second sheepskin. Theu
hu returned aud started te build
another fortuue. He is a mett
skilliul surgeon. A promlueut pliysieian
said last night that for many years Dr.
IJarry has had the largeet praotieo in the
state. He became a preaober of tempsr
anee wbieh seemed te intensify his man
nerisms. His treatment of mtns diseases
was ealled heroie by his fellow physlei.ius,
but bis success was phenomenal. Some-
timeshe would go toWalliugferdto atteA
asiuglecailaud would charge 41 or nothing.
At ether times hu would advertise the day
when he would be in Walliugierd or ether
small towns, and would oharge every pa
tient 410 for his services. He made
money last aud gave tuueh in chatity.
About four years age he begau te talk
again of heart troubles, and was soeu
under the iulluence of bis old enemy. He
made a desperate struggle against tbe iu.
tlueuoe that he felt coming coming ever
him, aud since that time his life has been
a perpetual light with liquor. The enemy
has deleated him. Of iate be has beeu
looked up lu all the principal Eastern
cities for vagrauey aud drunkenness.- All
his fortune is gene, aud his doetors say
that be will net live till morning. A
pathetie feature of bis life iu the local
prisons was the swarming in upon him of
scores of his old patients as seen as ha

Jehn McCullough, tbe tragedian, will
aet ue mete this season, and it is question
able if he will ever be seen behind the
footlights again. A week age he began
bis engagement at MoViekcr'a, Chicago.
His opemug performance gave no ground
for serious approheusieu, hut his second
showed that, something was the matter
with him. On tbe third night of the en

until Saturday he showed a llstiessaess in
his work uud an uueeitaiuty in his lluet
whleh gave rise te the gravest apprehen
sions among bis frlends. Last night be
appeared as Sparlaeui in the "Ulsdiater."
Tbe scene was p.tlable. lie groped for

stage te prompt him, mumbled his half.

drunken man. Many In the audience, be
lieving him te ba uitoxieated, hissed him,
and many mere oeupataloBiitely and
quietly left the thoatre. The porferraanco
of last night sealed tne oeurso te be pur
sued by his manager, Mr. Jeseph IJroeks.
lie determined te step.
Mr. Brooks said that the tragedian's
season has been olesed, that all the dates
had been oancellod, and arrangements
made te send the company baek te New
Yerk. lie wished the pablle te under
stand that among the company and
management all feellnes of disappoint-
ment at personal embarassment or less
were smothered in the general regret for
aicumieugn's pitiaoie condition, lie says
further that he was encouraged at the
beginning of the season by the fact that
the aoter was iu far better condition than
he had been at tbe beginning of the
previous season, and that he had oxpeetod
that as McCullough beoame oueo mero
used te aeting it would preve a tonle te
his system as it had done previously.
He had been rehearsing very hard all
Monday, and this caused a reaction of
hie mental trouble, culminating in the
painful sceno of Tuesday evening. Mr.
McCullough will, it is saul, be taken In
