with variegated ferns and feliage and pink

the deep terra oetta of the walla they

the lowest the darkest, the next a modiue
and the ten the lightest shade of pink.
The large drawing-room opened upon two
alcoves. Opposite ene was a large mirror
tncadrt with palms that roae eat of n
bank of pink tiger lilies, pink heath and
roses, interspersed with lovely leaves.
liut the ethor alcove, the wender of the
whele alTalr, was literally a bewer of
roses. Wire hetting, covered oleso with
theBO sweet blosseois mid leaves, lined the
interior, with the oxeoption of a mirror.
It was quite fairy like. The chimney
pioeo and fireplace wero arrauged wholly
with pink gloxinias and variegated foli
age, a delicate cocoa palm finishing each
end. The back drawing room mantel
shelf was similarly arrauged with pink
carnations, and that of the boudoir beyond
was ombewerod in magulficent pink tiger
lilies, oleanders, pink geraulums and the
loner part in glorious roses, with most
exquisite greenery. The curtains through
out the looms were all looped back by
bauds of roses ; in fact, it was a perfect
" uoeturno in pink " a la Whistler, and
culminated in the beautiful dress of the
hostess, who wero a rieh brocaded white
satin, trimmed with resus and priceless
lace, set off by a superb set of large pear
shaped Ilusaiau emeralds hurg from the
rivieres of diamonds.

It is rarely that the fishes, with their
staring eyes that can neither open or shut,
and expressionless faces, tnake any display
of their lives and dislikes, but wLcu they
de, they are very apt te astonish us. Can
it be peEsiblc, we say, that a fleh has any
power of feeling emotion ? Qui hear what
my friend Mr. Helder tell mu. He says
that Dr. 0. 0. Abbett, the well known
naturalist or seme ene who Dr. Abbett
knew oueo saw a young breed of catfish
(or kittcn.fish, whichever you please)
following their mother in a crock ; and,
securing them with ' plaoed them
all la a class clobe tn e feet from the water.
The mother fish scorned te knew at ouce
that something unUi.ial had happened,
and swam about for seme time, ovidently
ob30rvingherbabio3 alive and well, though
net able te understaud it. Several times
shn approached near the glebe, then swam
back as if undetermined ; but finally she
swam into shallow water, and using her
side, or peoteral, fins as feet, fahly wrig
gled ou dry land te the b isa of the glebo .
Here their oapter carefully ltborated the
young fishes, when, te use hla language.
"they irumcdiatclyclnstered about her.and
followed her into deep water," New,
you see, this catfish net only showed a
motherly anxiety for the fate of her young,
but she was willing te de a difficult ami
dangerous act in order te go te them.
She bere the sevore suffering of being out

The eity of Cleveland is infested by an
organized gang of incendiaries. There
wero soveral attempts made Thursday
ovenlng and Friday te burn the elty, and
but for the vigilanoe of trusted ompleycs
of the buildings the central portion, of this
large eity would have been in flames. At
tempts were made te set the Welshire, the
Rlackstoue and Pewer bloeks en fire. The
buldlngs were Orcd in places very difficult
te reach by the firemen and would have
been destroyed had the fires net been
quickly discovered. There were unmis unmis
takable evidences of incendiarism. While
Superior street was ene donse mass of
humanity te-day another supposed incen

Strauss, Miller & Orth, Firemen were
compelled te drive through crowds of
thousands of peeple. The exoitemeut is
intense. The lira was extinguished with

The Management el l'renen i'tliens,
A law passed in 1870 made a radical
chauge In the management of French pri.
seui, and new all prisonersaro required te
be kept isolated from ene another by day
as well as by night. Criminals whose
terms of sonteneo de net extend oue year
are ledged iu prisons belonging te the de
partment within which they were convict
ed, The point most insisted en is a
sufficient number of cells te keep these
who might be innocent of the charge
against them from oeming iu contact with
the habitual criminals'. The niattet hung
fire it long time, but in 1830 cooperation of
the governmeut was finally secured, and
proposed reforms are new in process of
execution.
