Frem the Country Gentleman. Blnee the use of itinerant threshing machine driven by steam is becoming oetnmon, there is danger effanners threw, leg aside the smaller horsepower which they have formerly used, and whieh may be applied te driving (talk cotters. There are tee many advantages resulting from the shore chopping of cornstalks, as com pared with the wasteful praotiee of feeding theru whole, for any geed farmer te emit it when it can be accomplished. Intelligent farmers, who have tried both ways, inlerm as that the feeding value of the sulks by oattleg ball an Ideu or less la length, Is according te estimate at least two and a half times greater than when uncut, and this estimate accords with our own re peated expeiiments. This estimate was made from the use of geed, w..l cured talks, but it would net apply te fodder which has beee exposed te rain, and be come dlwiolered and retted, aud which wenld be of little value in either oendltiou. Anether important advantage (,f outtieg short is the improved character of the manure, as every one will appreciate who has attempted te pile, lead or spread manure containing a large portion of tough cornstalks. The preceding remarks apply te dry stalks, and they are net less appllable te chopped ensilage. Tuu latter has, in faet, some ad vantages ever the dry feed in, several ways. The green stalks cut meie easily, or nearly twiea as fast with the same power ; the feed is mere palatable and easily digested ; and it is stored in far less space, and withent exposure te the weather. But forTeedIo.rv-.)cwv there is net a great dinereuce between well pre- t served and nnely cut dry fodder aud uoeulent eusllage. Whieh mode of feediug is adopted is net of great impor tance, bat in any oase feeding the stalks whole should never be practiced. Fer farms of mederateise, a two-horse lever or treed power will accomplish all that is necessary in the way of oheppiug fodder, where the threshing is performed by traveling steam threshers. Twe horses, with the best ensilage cutters advertised in our columns, of suitable size, will cut a ten of green stalks in tweuty minutes, and a ten of dry stalks iu a somewhat luDger period. The latter mjy ba done oe rainy days or in winter, as the feed may be Deeded, and the feed given te animals in tubs mada by sawing barrels iu two, or in the feeding troughs la stalls. If cattle de net eat it freely, it is beoae.se the stalks have net been curtd in a perfeoteoudition. Animals are net fend of half decked fod der. Large farms will require mere efficient machinery. Of the millions of farmers who raise corn and feed stalks te their eattle, the great majority still feed stalks uncut, aud a large portion, are half rotten by raius. The ag gregate Ions bv this munacement te the farmers of the Union is enormous It is doubtless a moderate estimate te put the whole amount of cornstalks subjected te this treatment at twenty million teus, but if only hall as much, it is a matter of some Importance whether this aggregate, new worth say thirty million dellais, might net be at lean doubled In value by the treat ment we have described, and made sixty or aaveuty milUeus. We de net give these numbeis as appruaehini aojuraey, but te illustrate the iuipottauej of paying mere attention te the subject. As te a diuutb has out short the fodder supply iu many parts of the country this searuu, it may be well te leek towards soma piuvioien for saving the exUting suppy A r tie(t etrulclua Uuric tue Sise, N.
