We did net tmter thu catacomb', which
lay along this read, iu whieh the p;ise
cuted Christians were comiielled ! hii'e
themselves during the third centuty. Te
our luft stretches out the Campigna, and
beyond it are the S.ibiue, and te the south
the Albau hills. On tlie latter are se it
tcred numerous villages. Acress the
Catupagua are strewn the broken arches of
the aqueduct, which formeily conducted
the water te the city from a like en the
top of the mountain. Tliu ruined brick
walls of the old raoe eetire, where the
chariot races wcre witnt'Kstd by admiring
crowds of old Kematis still remain stand
lug.
We dreve te the top of Moute Piucee,
ene of the highest of the sevun hills, from
which we obtain a flne view of the sun
tut and of thu whole city, which is spread
out before us. The Appiatt Way is heen
like a silver thread acresi the distant
Albau hills. This is a great resort for the
fashionable people of Heme, ami it is
whero the finest view in obtained of the
eitv.
VkIiIub lOiiiieiin Cliiirchea,
The churches of St. Maria Maggiore and
St Jehn Laterati are among the lluest,
both of which we visitul. Thryate both
richly adorned with paintings in Iresce by
the old mastera. Yestetday meining we
visited St. Peter's and the Vatican. Seme
idea of the estetit of the former may be
caiucd when It is learned that it is about
500 feet lenj; by 250 iu breadth and 400
feet high from the outturn of the high altar
te the top of the dome, llaeh of the
soveral altars ranged along tliu sides are
as large as an ordinary church. The
brenze statue, said te be that of St. Peter,
which stands in this church, tlie tees of the
right feet of which are much worn by the
kissing or pious pilgrim, impressed me
mero as that of Jupiter, than of our pre pre pre
oencoived Ideas or St Peter. Our guide
darkly hitited that such was the tout, but
we hepe net.
At tint Villein.
At the entrance te the Vatican, we pass
the picturesquely dressed Swisa giiaul te
the pope. We pass up thu long liue of
steps, aad go through the humorous gal
lories of frcscoes ami ether paintings by
the old masters, te whom Reman h'stery
ewos se ranch. We de net profess te be
sutlleieut judges te pronounce ou these
works of art, but many of them are se
intural ami expressive that they appear te
stand out from the canvas.
We new tlrlve about a mile te the statue
galleries in another part of tlie Vatlrau,
whero we vlew long lines of heathen and
Christian statues. This morning we
visited the Uapltoliee, te see the statue of
the "Dying Uladiater," whieh reeall the
exqulslte lines et llyren in his Chllde
Hareld, and te the Church of S. Plotre,
in Vincell, te see the statue of Mosei by

We notlce large olive orehards, nml
soveral patches of pretty geed Havana
tobaeoo, as we appre ieh Heme anil strike
the Tiiier rlver, along which the railroad
runs. There are vast arras of bottom lands,
principally used for pabluie, en which we
hoc large Lords of Italian cattle and horses.
Hull in I.ITO Hierlt,
Theso Italian catlle are of a dirty wlilte
color, ozcept a few entirely black, and
they all have very long horns. The horses
are gcnerally of an inferior breed. We
see a few lank and lean-sided porkers with
nenes llke our old self sharpening plow
points, ami nn occasional Heck of goats
The towns nnd villages In this part of
Italy are generally built en the tetm of
high hills, and have a very nged nml di
lapidated leek. It is evident that this was
done be as te render them defensible against
the lapaclty of their neighbors when the
country wns hi an almost constant state of
war.
When we lenve Heme we take a south,
eist course, turning around tlie city nnd
running through the vast Uampagua, which
resembles our western prairies te seme ex
tout, Tlie most of it is used for pasture,
where we soe the usual holds of white
eattle and horses. Patt of this land is
drained, but during the rainy season it is
full of water, which is the o.iufce of mtieh
malaria, A portion of it is covered ith a
kind el lur.e, reuiluriug it almost uselrss.
We been strike the blue Mediterranean
and reach O.Uia, 10 tulles distant from
and thu seaport of R mm, It is
rather a small place, but has extensive
fortilicitteus. We new gradually take a
western course,semetiinoa closely bordering
en tlie Mediterranean, aud agatu ten or
twelve miles away from it. We pass a
number of towns, but none of particular
iioe. The country is rather barren, with
mountains ou our right.
Jlie l.pnulni: Tower of t'Ltt.
We at length reach Pisa, distant from
Heme about 210 miles, whero we remain
all night. We de net tarry long the
next morning, only te see the eolebrated
Leauing Tower. Pisa Is a place of seme
histetlc interest, nml at ene time oecupiod
an important position in Italian affairs. It
new only contains a population of 20,000.
We leave here for Milan, distant about
2)0 miles, via. Oenea aud Spczia, betli im
portant seaports en the Moditerranoan.
O.ir route lays along the sea coast, nnd we
piss through such a suconssieu et tunnels
that it Is almost impossible te obtain a
sight of the country. We go through no
less than He of these tunnels hi a diatauee
of less than 50 miles ; sumo of them seven
mils long. We had occasional glimpses
of tlie hca coast, where we soe women

which have a. capuelty for 10,000 soldiers.

Along thu mountain sides are large vine
yards aud orchards of olives. Figs,
peaches and plums grew abundantly. The
gardens appear te produce about the same
vegetables that ettis de, but the Italians
de uet niake much account of thu potato.
I i.diau corn is grown oxteusivoly, but it is
of the small or Hwcet v.irlety generally,
aud they plant it tee thick te yield well.
We getaway from the meuutalus at
last, and reach Aluisamlria, which is a
railroad cuutre, whero we change cars
fur Milan, and am obliged te lay ever
uuttl2:lS0 p. m. Here we had some dilli
culty about our tiukets, aud neuu et the
railroad officials being able te spjak Eng
lish, nor we Italian, thore was a deadlock
which was finally broken by our hunting
up a gentleman who could speak Euglish,
who kludly left his busiuess uud went
with us, aud straightened out our dilli

abjut the euly disinterested aet of kind

The eolebrated battle Held of Marengi,
whero Nap Moen defeated the Austriaus,
en June 14, 1800, aud whero the Freueh

The ride from Alessandria te Milati was
en a train equal in speed te that ou the
Quarry ville read. It was a tedieus, hut
ami dusty ride, but we readied Milan at
5:;rJ p. m., aud took quarters at lue Hetel
d'Mll.in, which is a geed Italian hostelry.
Milan (Mil me they call It here) is a large
and nourishing city of evor 300,000 iuhabl
tauts. Iu the old part of the town the
streets are narrow, but Iu the new portions
they are bread, aud tlie heuses are well
built. It has large manufactories of silks
and woelous. Iu sculpture it mikes a
specialty, having many artists of hitfh
rep i te, an well as iu paintings.
Mllnii'a itiiiueiis Uutuedr.il.
Thore are a large numbir of very llu
public buildings, art galleries aud elegaut
chinches, but thu pride of Milan Is the
Duome cathedral, of which we had heard
much, and it certainly fully oame up te
our expectation. We have already spokeu
of the oue at Cologne, this being in the
same style of arohiteoture ( Oethiu ). We
de net think it quite as syinmetrie.il as thu
Cologne cathedral, but Doing et wiiite
marble nnd Its surroundings batter, gives
it a whiter aud oleauer nppiurnnee. Ac
cording te thu guide books it is 177 feet iu
