THE TEXAS FEVER.
HOW IT IS C'ONTItAUI'Kll AND UUHr.ll.
llellel Tlist tlis Abnndonmret of the OM
t'attle Drives II l.ed te tlie Utitbrruk
el tlie Infection,
Frem the New Yerk Sun.
In Ogalulln, Hub., It Is bolievctl that the
recent outbreak of Texaa fevcr can be
traced te the feet that Hteck ewners: nre
traunpertiiiK thelr oattle netthward tnore
nnd mero by rail, and that if tlie railroad
ouKrfledoH the drlve hucU ularniH will be
frequent.
The great aittle dtiveH from Toms,
north te Kansas, Nebraska and WvemhiR
have fleen their day. More than !)00,000
cattle passed ever tbetn thin year, but old
Hteck raiflerH nay that hereafter the fihip
nients will be niade principally by rail.
Hsdlreadfl are ponetiatlm; tlie great graz
lug dlhtrletH of Texas further each year,
and It lifts been found cheucr te fieud
cattle north by cars than te drlve thorn.
The rapid settlement of tbe country lia
contributed te make the drlve dillletilt
and unprofitable, and the trickery of the
Indians in the territory has become very
oxaBjieratitift. Fer several years the
Kiewas atHlUomauelicH paid no attention
te the enormous herds annually driven
pant their habitations, but a few foaseim
nKothey began demandinc tell lu the form
of ene or two bceves At first the stock
men thought it was a pretty geed jeke,
and when the savages would oemo out, te
collect tribute they would give a steer or
two and go en. After a while, under the
Inlluonce of vicious white men, hall
breeds, and reucgades, tbe Indians be
came mero exacting. Last year they de
mnuded six head from each drove, and
this year they called for eight, but wero
willing te oempromlso en the payment of
meney. In fact, the extortion became se
bold that tbey finally catne te demand
meucy alene. The cattle wero net
of much tiEe te them, and it has learned
that tliey usually sold them te the rcno rcne
cades. When the Indians discevetcd that
the stock owcers would pay thorn mero
money in lieu of the cattle than the rene
gadeB would pay for the cattle, they bo be bo
eamo clamorous for money. Some berds
have paid these blackmailers as high us
$250, and in ene or two Instances drovers
have had te return te their rauebci,
sovernl hundred miles away, in order te
get the meney demanded. The policy of
many cattle men in compelling their cow
boys te ue unarmed en the trail has ma le
the latter entirely helpless, and prevented
Heme of the liveliest of fights. Tim In
diana nre nil superbly armed. Tliey
block the way with Winchesters mid sell
cocking revolvers. The disarmed cow
boys who have had an experience of this
kind never get evor it. Their business in
that section has been stripped of half its
charm. A few collisions have occurred,
but iu meat cases tbe stock moo have paid
the tell iu beevcB or in money, and hur
ried en, net caring te waste time iu parley
ing or lighting.
liesidea the annoyance and oxpenso of
the Indian tell gate, drovers have found
that the fencing in of large tracts of laud
has sorleusly inconvculeuccd them.
Several of tliese fences have been put up
en old trails, and nema lights liave oc
curred when attempts have been made te
cut them. Taking the growing disad
vantages of the drire into consideration,
the cheap freights and oxpeditlou of the
railroads have beoemo very attractive te
stock owners. About oue third of the
cattle northward bound have beeu shipped
by rail this year, and cowboys ate appro appre appro
heusive that the geed old days en the trail
will seen beoemo a matter of tradition
only.
When the cattle catne north en the drive
a distance et 800 or 900 miles, the TexauB
usually wero the fever out en the way, and
infection of native oattle was almost un
heard of. All Texas cattle have this con
tagion te Bome extent, but it makes no
showing until tbey reach northern lati
tudes aud oemo in coutaet with the na
tives. Doctors disagree as te its nature
nud the method of Infection. It has efteu
been noticed, however, that native oattle
who graze ou the Texas trails are taken
with the fever, but tliey are powerless te
communicate the dlseaue themselves.
Most of the veterinarians ngrce that Texan
slobber ou the grass aud spread the conta
gion iu this way, though ethers assert,
that the disease is caused by n gnat ledged
iu the feet of the TcxaLS, Whatever it
is, aud however it spreads, it bailies hu
man skill, nud Us victim dies within
twenty. feu- hours iu great ageuy.
That the genna of the disoafe are
net in the nir is amply proved by
the fact that nothing but actual contact
with the ground ever whieh Texaua have
passoder confinement iuears or yaids pre
vieusly oeaupiou by inem win luoauiate
natives. Experiments have shown that a
bunch of iufeoted Texaus and a buueh cf
uatives may be placed iu clean pastures
and soparated from oaeu ether merely by a
rail or beard fonce, aud the natives will
remain healthy. Turn the natives into
the enclosure with the Texaus, however,
aud the disease will seen show itself
among the natives. Texas cattle never
dle with the fever, while uativei always
drop off wlthlu a low hetim. While
Texas oattle freBh from the Seuth, bilug.
ing the disoase with them, never show nny
signs of dlboase at ull, old plainsmen con
tend that after oue winter ou the Net tliern
ranges they, tee, beoemo susceptible te
the plague and full easy victims te it. Tbe
introduction of the fever at this time is
attributed te the rapid transportation of
infected oattle by rail, the development of
the disease nt the time they wero landed
and the contaet of natives with the trail
evor whieh they pasted after leaving the
cars while en reute te the ranges. It is
feared that the abandonment of the old
tiails, new imminent, en which
Texauu wero the fever out, will oauue
frequeut appearance of the disease in
North.
