top of which ene can overlook the country
for miles around. Twe evenings in the

many visitors.
I liave cotne te the conehiHieti that thcie

oecAsiou.illy ene nees an arihtoera'io look

scarce. Thi'ie are plenty of Mexicans
among the laboring claests, but tliey live
in the poorer parts of the city ; their l.iu

of the them knew enough Kugllsh te

of the population is Uertnati and the rest
is compeKcd of peojile from every state in
the Union, and, it fceems, almost every
country iu the world. Many ceme here
seeking health and fortune each winter
briDgs from three te live thousand invalids
and the friends who come te cate for
them. The climate here is certainly
delightful and muht he bcueliei.il te cases
of threat and luug treuble. The city has
hardly kept pace with its rapidly Increas

If you thought we had reached thn
"jucping off pl.tce," at Ban Antonie, jeu
would surely think we had 'taken the
leap,' if you should see us new. We had
oxpected te visit Housten and Ualvesteu,
and go into Mexico as far as Monterey,
but we found we could net go by beat te
O , as we desired, nnd getting into Muxi
co is accompanied with such delays aud
annoyauees, en account of heeuring per
mits, having baggage examined, and net
knowing the lauguage that we rather lest
our ambition iu that direction and pre
ferred ret te spend ene or two hundred
dollars for se uncotnfertablo a trip. We
left S.ui Antonie at night ; miiue time
before da light we found otiri-elveson the
batik of the Kiu Grande, traveling ever a
read cut out of the rock at muhe pi ices
ecoeped out in the form of a half tunnel,
with the ledge of rock overhauling the
ear; for oleveu mips the read lias been
cut iu this wonderful way, but muce
it Is done, it isoeusidcred se dangerous, en
account of huge reeks falling, that trains
meve along very Hlewly as if afiaid of
jarring ami starting a slide ; before very
long this part of the read will be aban
doned. TUp blulls are very high and of
solid rock ; the river is net very wideat
this part, se that ene might speak acieH
te the Mexican side ; the blulls en that
side did net seem ipnte te high. About
soveu o'clock iu the morning we catne te
a station called Langtry. Here we get out
for breakfast, aud wem dime toil te a
broken, abandoued car, standing ou a sule
traek, which had been pressed into sernee
for a restaurant. Here we had verj fair
coffee, cold meat, bread and pie, herved up
by a Chinese cook. The test of the trip
was a constant winding among the hills,
soine of which were se steep that we had
te make numerous curves te get ever
thein. We had left the br'ght green foil
age befere daylight, aud ler miles and
miles would net nee u true ; the gras is
dry and grey looking and the only thing te
rolievo the barreu and monotonous color or
the hills was the wild (lowers ; thore wero
ipuautitles of Spanish dagger, with its
large whlte bloom, brilliant red cactus,
and many spots of pink, blue aud yellow

C'apt. Pratt aud his wife, of the Indian

expect te take back lllty Apache students
for the school. Soen alter Uve o'clock we

with high blulls aud pjints of rock iu

reached stcep, roeky hills, aud wheu day

with high reeks en ene hi de and a deep

ami the way the driver would whip up his

uext day was bright and beautiful and
towards evening we went out te vlew tue

The altltude of Fert Davis Isoverflio
thousand feet above Sau Antonie, aud the
air Is very nure and clear. The several
small towns, together with tlie govern
ment pest composing this community, are
located In a sort of basin, surrounded by
high, roeky bluffs. I liave nover koeubuoIi
masses of reeks, such oelumus of stones,
llke an immense wall about the summit of
the hills. One dav we climbed ever huge
rocks te the top of a hill ever thrce hun
dred fcet high, commanding a magnill.
cent vlew ou the plain below we could
see the cavalry drill taking place at that
time
from the distauce the houses loekud
iittle larger thau dogs, The rogliuent
stationed here Is the 10th cavalry, oelorcd
soldiers, und a few companies of whlte in
fantry. (Jen. Utlersen has aemmand of
the pest. It was he who chased Victeria
aud his baud of Indians from this part of
the country a few years age. Guard
mounting overy morning, and dress
p.irade overy Sunday form an attraotive
leattire hore. The town is composed almost
entirely of genuine udobe houses, built of
big blocks of sun-dried mud, oue story,
ll.it reef, small windows or nene at all
ground floors, usually bare, or covered
with cauvaes, (though we luxuriatoen an
ingrain carpet) and ceiling of rough legs,
with sticks jeluiug them.
There are about two hundred whlte
people here, outslde of the pest, sotne of
thorn very wealthy, and jet, Uve iu such
hmices 1 Thore are perhaps flve hundred
Mexlcaus ; their iittle cottletneut is called
" Chihuahla," their houses are oveu elder
nml mero dilapidated than the etherr.
Most of them ate Catholics ; tliey have a
a uhitruh here and a priest who is very
.oaleus. There is ulse an earnest young
Methodist missionary who is working
among them aud who, in less than six
mouths, has established a soheoi aud a
church, holding three or mero services a
week.
A I'nttur Wanted.
A l'resbyteriau church was organized
heie a few days age, but tliey have ue
pastor jet, and usually join in a
union Sunday school sorvice with
the Methodist mitsieu. Chaplain Wea
ver nnd his wife, of the governmental
pest, have bi-ou very kind, showing us
through the various depirtmenls, etc.
Kverythlug is kept in excellent order aud
leeks comfortable. On Saturday Lieut.
Masen, the iiuartcrmaeter, seut au army
stage or ambulance, fur us te take a rlde ;
we vseie out sever 1 hours, gulug through
that part of the Muptpuez Cation which we
had traveled by night ou coming here, the
formation of rocks here is very singular
aud iuteiestiug ; at oue place thore are a
number of columns standing in a circle,
tall and massive aud usMttulug rather fan
tastic shapes ; oue itnmcuse fellow looked
hke a monk with a gown aud heed ou, nnd
steed iu such stately dignity that we
named him "Martin Luther," out of
oemplimeut te the chaplain, who is a
Lutheran. Tl Oiu rocks furnished geed
hiding places for the rebbers who used te
attack the stages ; sometimes they were
Italians aud often desperadoes iu Indian
dlsgutse Only two or three years age it
would hardly have been safe te have taken
such a ride uuarmed, but lately thore
has been no treuble. We rede through
a prairie de community aud saw
great numbers of thorn ; as we approached
they would run te their holes and stand
up until we catne very near nnd then tliey
would dropout el slgui. llie nttie our
roe, or donkeys, the Moxieaus use, ure
very small and shaggy they leek very
odd as thuy travel along at such a steady
gait, with the'r heads dewu se oleso te the
ureuud and almost concealed by the large
leads of weed, or hay, fastened en their
backs ; it scorns us If they could net carry
such immonee packs, but they nre very
strong and cau travel many miles the
boys and girls ride them; te day I saw
three boys en the back of a Iittle brown
burro ; they seem klud and gentle, aud the
children are net afraid of them.
Fer pure 'itmonphero tills place is pro pre pro

must be a splendid place in summer, and
