A Farmers' luitltute
Dr. J. P. Wiekewliam, lretn the com
mittce appointed at last meeting te cuu
fcldcr thu advlsauility of holding a farmers'
inBtitutc, presented tue following lopert :
" The commlttce appointed te consider
the advinabllity of holding a Farmers'
Instltute respectfully report :
"1. That buch an instltute should be held
in the city of Lancaster during the latter
part of May, orearly in, June, and contlnue
in cslen net less thau two days.
"2. That the cxcroiBee should consist of
CBsayaaud discussions by practical farm
cfs, and of Instniotive IccttireH by Icadim;
agriculturallHtfi from abroad
"U. That the hubjeets t be considered
should be bueU as relate exclusively te the
dliietcnt branehes of practical farmiug,
"4. That invitations te be preaunt should
be extended te Governer Pattlseu, Dr.
Loring, U. S. commissioner of agriculture;
Thes. J. Edge, secretary of thostate beard
of fi);rlculturu ; Prcsldent Atheiteu, of
the state agricultural collcge ; Rev. Dr.
Caldcr, Icctunref Iho htate Qiange, nud
ether leading agriculturalists from this
nud ether states.
"5. That an excoutlve committce of live
be appointed te arrauge the tlme and
place ler the mectiug of the instltute, te
advertlse the snmu, te invite speakers and
prepate the pregramme, and te conduet
the precccuiugs. '
Jehnsen Miller moved thu adoption of
the report and the appointment of the
committce proposed therein.
Dr. Wiekersham speke at Bome leugth
in favor of the instltute. If properly
managed at least flve hundred Liueaster
enuuty farmeiB would attend it, and
probably a much larger nutnber, if Uever
nor Pattlseu and the ether distinguished
men named could be securrd as speakers.
He would like te hear howevor lretn the
farmeis present, what they thought of the
preposition. Thcre nre three important
points te be considered. Will thu instltute
if held, be well attended? Can enough
tnoney, say $200, be raUed te pay the
necessary expenses? Can an cxcctitive
committce be found who will cuergntieally
push forward the onterprisj and mike it u
success?
31. D. ICendigbuid the project met his
vlews exactly, but he did net knew hew
it would suit the paople of his noigber
heed. They have becu rather slew hereto -fere
in connecting themselvus with any
kind of soeictioior even attendiug agii
cultural meeting. He thought they would
be apt te attend au instltute bitch as pre
posed, as it is something new ; it would
be necessary, howevor, te have local core cere core
mitteoB nppoiuted in each district te ex
plain the character of the institute and
work up a feeling in its f.wer.
II. M. Engle felt satlslljd thit overy
momber of the society posent was in
favor of the instltute, but uufortuaately
there are net many of us. He was tin.
williug te beliLve, however, that ten pro
gressive f.irmer.s in his district amid net
be fcund te take an ao'..ve interest in such
au outerpribo. The number ought te be
much larger. Our farmers attend pelit
cal meetings and othets of les import
auce, nnd it would be a a iame if they did
net attend a farmers' imtitutu in this, thu
catden snot of the commonwealth. It
would be n ehatue te allow eili t counties
of net hall our agricultural seurces out
strip us in this dlroctieu. He bjllnvm thu
instltute would beh success. The peuplu
weuid turn out te bee the governor, il ler
nethinif else.
JosephF. Witmersaid that if a pulul '
eal instltute were proposed thore would be
a orewd in attondanee, and it was wen
der te him why farmers did net taltu ;
mere interest In theso things which niore
nearly coucern thorn. Onu reason why
they de net take mero uiirruss in the
meetings of the Agricultural soa'ety is,
that they go te ohuteli every Sunday
morning, txn niter the hoi vice gather into
squads, forming llttle Agricultural so
cieties of their own, and luttrch.uige
vlews en any current agucultuial topics, '
If anything geed or new is known it is
ihore discussed. Our farmers have geid
farms, geed Imp'oraents and machinery,
geed htoek and everything of the hi's',
but they will net attend agrieultur.il
meetings, Pei baps the p eseuoe of tlie
governor might have thoeit'on' of biingin
them out.
Dr. Wieketslnm said he could almost
positively piomse the attondauceof Oov Oev Oov
ernor Pattueu. He took great inlciu.t in
agrioulture and was n flrm friend of ihe
farmer. He attended nearly all the meet
ings of the statu beard of agrioulture and
otber agricultural meetings when invited.
Dr. Loring would also come, uud he was
sure that graud old farmer Victer 1'ielett
would nttetid, if invited. Theu the unvn..
paperB would ronder ellleUnt aid, as they
always de en such occasions.
Levl 8. West said he had time and
again trled te set fanm-m te connect
tlioraselves with the agriculture hoeioucs
and attend the mcutlugs and take au
intercstiu sueh mattcrB.but he had always
failed. The fat mers are, es a elass, pre
judlced against societies and what they
eall "book farming," nnd he much
doubted whother they could he get inter-
itcd in the proposed instltute
Henry M. Engle thought Mr. Heist was
inellncd te leek nt the dark sule of tle
ploture. We should net Judge of the
luture by the past we are progressing in
almost every brnueh of farming and al
though Bome atlll eliug te old habitH and
old rnotheds, there are many othera who
readify avail themselves of all modern ln ln
ventleLS and impreveinenta, and glve ear
te the suggestions of soieutiilo fanners,
lle billevcd the institute could be made a
success.
Jehnsen Miller was se well satisfied that
it would be a siicaiss that he would take
upon hlmatl' te giwuutee that at least
tin farmers recn Warwlek would attend,
mid he would giurantee nt .'east $10 as
Wntwlek's sluire of the oxpensos,
Mr, Engle said he would gunrantee as
large an attondanee and as mueh tnoney
from Denegal.
J. P. Wltmcr thought thore need he no
uncaslnesfl about the financial part of the
onterprlso. The soelotylias $140 In the
treasury and the county ewes It a year'n
appropriation. If the distinguished
spcakers named by Dr. WIckeraham cau
be scoured he had no doubt the Instltute
would be largely attended.
0. L. Hunsocker said the objeot pre
pesed met his approbation. If farmers
did net attend It, the fault nnd the less
would be thelrfl, net outs Though this
society has been very poorly eustalncd,
and Eome newspaper men have poked fun
nt It, hobelfovod it had dene mueh geed.
It Is net always the largest numbers that
accomplish the most ; nations hnve sorao serao sorae
tlmos been saved by a very few patriots.
J. It. Uuoknalterbollovcd that Salisbury
township would send te the Instltute at
least twenty llve farmers nnd thought
thore need be ue flnanelal dlflleulty, os
peclally If tuoje was a geed loeturo en the
horse.
Mr. Linville moved that the prcsent
committce be contlnued, with instructions
te carry into efTeet the plan of an Instltute
as outlined in thelr ropeit, as nbove.
hi. D. Kendlg moved te nmend by
adding the sccretary (Mr. Linville) te the
committee The amendment was adopted
and the motion as nmonded unanimously
agreed te.
l'ramlnms for Heys.
Mr. Lluvllle, from the committce ap.
pointed nt a former meeting te arrange a
list of piemiums for juvonile corn planters',
prcceuted the following report :
Tlie oemmlttco to!nrrauge ajllst of pro pre

of the projeods must give the kind and
preparation of the soil, variety of seed and

The report was unanimously adopted.
Crep Koperts.
Mr. Engle said he we'tld have te make
a correction of his last month's report
relative te the prospects el the peach
crop, no had then said that all the peach
lauds wcie killed by the Irest. He new
uotlecd that thore worn a geed many buds
en tue upper urancues of thu trees.
Jehnsen Miller tald the wheat or. p
