Itemed? ler Currant Worms
A oerrospondout aska us for a remedy
for the leaf est of the currant, (utyiif):
that he lest last year a flne crop of cur
rants by the sudden disappearauce of the
leaves, which he discovered te be trone by
this destructive worm. We knew uet
hew often wu have referred te the depre
dations of this pt t. Their opcratieos are
rapid, and unless their first appearance la
watohed they may de their work befere
oue is aware of It. There are several rem
cdles. We have used line, sifted coal
nshes. first upritikUim the leaves thorough
ly with water, se as te reach the under
parts, and apply the dust profusely, and
re peat it ence or twice if necessary, which
may be the can.-. Hut there is nothing se
cILjoUve as uhtit htlle bore, dusting It ever
ai well as ou the uudur Hide of the leaves,
whieh never fails In di-streytne it. It can
be had at the druggist's, and some general
stores. The leavus should be watched as
seen as they appear, as the worms some
times get te work very early. We may
have something niore te say en this subject
as the time for the danger approaches.
Disease of Animals.
Judging from what we are se constantly
readtng lu the jeurcala of the day in re
gard te the diseases that affect cattle aud
swine hore nud there, oue would be led te
coneludo that our farm animals ought te
be entircly ezempt from any disoase at all
If two or thrce cows or bulloeka should
suddenly die among a large herd upeu oue
farm, the ery is raised that an epidntnie
has appcared and a great mortality among
the stock must ousue. Semetimes u pen
ei hega may hcoemo diseased and
die, aud the same alarm is imme
diately created. Why cattle should
escape sickness aud death, and the
human species should ha subjected te cpi
demies carrying off at times thousands of
people, is uet explained. Still, cattle are
less liable te disoases aud fatal results
thau any ether cUsa of auimals, except
perhaps the borse ; but they are uoverthe
less liable te be attacked by contagious
slekness whieh may prove very fatal ; but
seldom has it beeu thuease in this oeuutry
te an extent te eauie serious dismay te
the farmer nnd grazier. Fer years of late
something like the plnure pneumonia has
mero or les prevailed lu Kiirope aud the
United States ; but ai it has been very
limited in the attacks upon cattle, as the
8o-called "cholera" is upeu hes, they will
very probably mero or less centtuue, but
cot te an oxteut te cause auy uuy alarm or
raueh less.
Sheep lUliins unci Malum.
Eugland, it is well known, has always
been famed ever overy ether country for
the oxcelleuoeof its mutton, aud that oue
of the realu reasons of it is that tlie sheep
are fatted ou turnips and brau. with the
erdiuary pnstuie exclusively. In sections
of the United StaUs, where tlie same
method is pursued, it Is claimed that our
mutteu is ctnul te tliu English. I'uU, we
have reason te holievo, is true, us wu have
eaten right hore lu OdrmauUiwe mutton
equal te the Ueglmh Southdown, which is
regarded ns the best, set side by sule ou
the table with our own. Iu (nut, the er
dlet was that our mutteu, though u little
cearser grained, was mero delicate and
higher flavored Iu England the turnip
is n great bheep feed, te which it is mUI te
ewo its oxeellon 'e. And why should we
net adept it here for the same purpnse ?
Thore is really no braueh of farming mero
profitable than sheep raising, and we have
many time wondered why it was net mere
gonernlly pursued. In Eastern 1'onuByI 1'enuByI
vaula most of our farms ure tee small for
UiIh purpose ; but thore nre tens of thou
sands of aores In the northeri', westeru
and southern poitieim peculiarly adapted
te sheep raiting.
The tiagllsu butuhers say that in killing

This is n unit that It would ba well for our
uutohetH te fake. Mauy porseus who
raiseshm-p nud uuuually slaughter many
douetent tint meat simply ou ncoeuut of
this woolly flavor, and yet they never
imagined the i canon of it.
