Farmer, whether they cultivate a thou.
Band aotea or only ft score, should bear it
iu mind that tuey nuetna join nun oiuern

ferest upon thelr land, but in adding, by
Planting their nhnre, te iticrcaBe the tint
or production of the country. It is net
tndlsponsaUle that all the new growth
should be the euk.8, hickories, etc., but n
portion may be ftult trees, such ib walnut,
chestnut, cherry, ote. Patches of new
timber should be found upon overy farm,
according te Its slze ; and In finch case it
will be read 11 v seen hew lramonse the nif-
gregata would be, nnd hew Important the
lnfluence by the incrcase ei tlie rnoistuie

ity of the oultlvated ground.
That forests produeo meisture, ami
shade cnrlehea the soil, thus adding te the
oxtent of the crops and the quantity or
feed for man and beast Is a question
which is no longer debatable. koei ler

rivers in Asiatic Turkey, and we wl soe
that the very slte of the Garden of Ldeu
g nothing new but barren sautlc, appear
ing as if no grceu thing ever existed
there, yet we all have read of the bound
less fertility of the heII, and the uusur
nasned beautv of the laud at one period ei
the world. Tiiere ean bu no doubt that
the wholesale destruction of the forests
can have but oue result te make the soil
storlleaud unproductive, wbldi will na
turally drlve awuy the population until
wheln reirleus nre abandoned audgiveu up
te the ravages of time. This censumma
tlen, we repeat, is In many large exten
sions of torrltery te be seen iu the elder
nontlnents of Asia and Africa, and will iu
time overwhelm any laud denuded of Its
forest. It Is true that this may net happen
until after the lapse of centuries, but It
will come oveutually aud inevitably where
forests hftve abounded, aud where they
nre constantly rodueed until they are all
measurably destroyed, and nene are
planted te take their places and keep up
the ordinary moisture of the land, and the
aflluenee which naturally is the result of
shade
In many sections of the West and
southwest, devoid of timber, and known
as prairies, cultivation is maiuly success
ful only by irrigation There are no troes,
doubtless owing te the great fires that
must bave swept ever these regions and
carried who!eale destruction of the for
csts at n rometo period. It cannot be as
cribed te any ether cause. We are pleased
te say, however, that in these regions, of
Iateynars, this denudation is being reme
dled by the planting of forest., preduced
in many instances by certain Btate geveru
mentfl elTeriug liberal premiums te oneour
age trce plauting, aud we see already mil
liens upon millions of trees growing
where only a few years age scarcely atree
was te be seeu. Heme of our great rail
road companies find it te their interest te
stock the vacaut parts of their lines with
young trees und thus grew enough timber
te supply tbeir own enormous wants for
ties, and besides te provide a grateful
shade for their numerous passenger trains.
Sueb varieties as the catalpa, cotton weed,
etc., grew rapidly, and being of an endur
ing nature, it is this that we must leek te
mainly in the future te meet this great
aud iucreasiug demand for railroad ties.
The idea that farmers and landowner
generally eutertained that they may net
live te enjey the advantages of the tree
planting, should be utterly bauished from
their minds. They will require only about
twenty years te realize the most liberal
hopes of success , at leas' it will add te
the valuu of the (arm, by the faet that the
amouetof timber is te ba iucroabed Unload
of dlmlnlttbed. We all knew bow auxleus
overy purcliaier of a tract of land Is te
knew whother there is auy and hew tnueh
timburupuu a faun ettureu for sale. In
fact, there is no creator mistake made
than te cut down the weed upon it farm
wheu purchased, with a view te tnei the
second payment ; aud this mistake is in
variable biuuuht home te evcry oue in a
few years. It is then tee late te remedy
the evil It is like taking the life-bleed
out of the laud.
