The depth of plowing is a subject that
glvca rlsotetnoro discussion and difference
of opinion than almost any ether in farm
ing. Many de net ceusldcr the very I in
pertant fact that deep or shallow plowing
dopemls upon the nature of the toil. The
trntu 18, thore nre many soils in which if
ene plow deep he may find great profit in
se deit)? ; hut en the ethor hand, thore nre
thousands and thousands of acres of land
where it Is sheer madness te plow deep.
On Jl.it clay land, where water cannot drain
rapidly away, and where the lack of drain drain
age is the bnne of the cultivator, it is
found hv cxporiunce that a shallow hut
rich turface soil is much bstter than a
deeply stirred or plowed ene. And the
reason is obvious. If water be nn injury
and it cannot get into the soil by reasen of
the hardness of the subsoil, the rain will
pass ever the surface te the ditcher, which
always have te he raade in a lltt country.
If we loosen the soil deeply we only gather
raore of the enemy, and this ceunterbalan
ces what otherwlse might be of great value
In a deep soil. Ilesides tticre are ether
considerations ; if the surface soil be peer,
and we turn this down into n still poorer I
subsoil, we bury what little geed thore 1
might have been in the surface soil far I
below the reach of the roots. Thore is no I
department of Industry wherein circum
stances alter cases inore thau in this.
While tlcep plowing is an excellent thing
when circumstances agree, thcre nre in
numerable cases where wisdom would
direct us te tnke the ether couise.
