Karepe Hungry fur American Dentin.
Tbtt a prophet Is net without honor
ave Id IiIh own country is belnjr domon demon domen
stratid by b Jeuhk Amerlcnn who Is new
reaping laurels by the cartload in Berlin.
This young ruan Is known here as a play
wrlfilit. Ills name, whleU yet lingers in
biff type at sorae of the country crew
reads and along the mefs (jrewu fence, is
Hartley Campbell. Probably no yeiitiR
roan ever fought the ltylitef life niore des
poiately or mero vainly thau did he for
years He produeed plays with the fecun
dity of a Lope de Vcjfa, and for the raeHt
part they were Amorlean plays, dealinc
with the llfe about him net always with
finesse, but jjencrally with bravery and
strength and through most of tbem there
ran a rough strain of clcmetital poetry,
lint the nianaucr laughed him te soern,
the critic sneered at his homespun mate
rial and the publle worn Inclined te leek
upon him as a rather overweening fail
ure But he krpt en writing. Neither scorn
nor neglect could lutermtt the stream of
plays. Falling te obtain a manager he
bocame hU own manager, and thus get
bcfoie the people This put him en his
legs, e te ujieak, and he began te tuake
money. IJut he never succeeded in break
lug through the literary b.irrler and ob
taining iccoguitlen as a dramatist. An
impregnable ptejudlce against American
drama punaied lilm iverynhere. Mr.
Iieuccicault had risen te the altitude of
genius en the Meleti debiis of the French
stage. Every theatre in the country was
open te him, and every manager steed hat
in band begging him te exert ids genius
and purloin something for that house. Hut
the eilgmal stuff they would nene of it.
Then oue day, alter teu or fifteen years
of struggle ler recognition, Mr Hartley
Cnmpbell rese up, shook the duet of Union
Square from his feet and started for Qer
many. It was a bold tiling for this barn
stermlug Auietican playwright te de te
threw hlnm'lf into that sea of profound
dramatic culture, where eveiy minnow is
a critic ami every far til no a dramatist. A
bread npple of commkeratieg laughter ex
tended fiem Printing lluum tquare te
Peoria wheu it was known. What did the
author of the " Galley Slave " ami "My
Partner " propeso te de in the land of
Goetho and Sutller and Kotze'mo ? There
was a great deal of pity felt for Campbell
in anticipation of the mingled horror ami
ama. merit that his American rubbish
would exoite in the later Leasing of that
transcendental dumalu.
The result is a curious one. The Ger
mans have bailed Mr. Campbell as a dra
tnatist of genius. They jKislttvely like his
American rubbish, 'lhose very elements
which were deprecated here as rude and
vulgar and shallow are theie pronounced
te be natural, fresh and vigorous. He is
called the "lirct Harte of the drama,"
" tiie most successful dramatic author of
America," "the young genius of the
Western stage." Philosophy is at his
feet ; the profeui.d Gcrmau intellect takes
its hat off te him. The pepulace crowd te
tee his ptajs and the prefcs concedes te
him a place of honor among the great
playwrights of the era.
This result is be proueunccd and se un
expected that it opens a wide field of spec
ulative thought. Why after all may net
the rroaguilien of genius be only a quos
tieu of locality, and why may net bun
dreds of ether struggling and neglected
men of brains in America tiud recognition
and honor by changing their bisi ? Why,
forexample, would it nut be a judicious
inove for Mr. Clias. G.iylcr, auethcr
Ameiican playwright, te go te Greece, ami
ence ou Attle soil, amid the traditions of
lch)lus and Euiipidcs. eecure that
honor which is impossible in his own
country ? It is just possible that the
critics of Paris would hail with special
delight such fresh and simple geniuses as
are the authors of the " Farmer's Daugh
ter " und " Her Atonement," and Mr.
Augusliu Daly himself might reverse the
verdict of mankind by moving from
Ureadway te the Latin Quarter.
