Timely Topics Seaslbiy Treated by the
"Germaatewn TeUgrapb."
It does net appear te be as generally
known te the farmers and planters of the
United States as it should be, that there is
always a permanent market and regular
demand for geed horses in all the great
cities in this republic, as well as in the
leading countries of Europe. The great
powers of the Old World maintain such
enormous armies that the nse of horses for
cavalry and artillery, for transportation
of baggage, ammunition, and supplies,
renders necessary large resources for the
unfailing supply of these animals. In this
view of tbe case, it is really surprising
that it is only of late years that the ship
ping of horses from enr leading ports te
these of Europe has become a regular
business, although still far inferior te the
enormous proportions assumed by the
shipment of horned cattle. The faet is,
however, that by some extraordinary stu
pidity, the business of raising horses has
been in this country tee much mistaken
for a connection with horse racing;
when, in reality, the two things are entire
ly diatinet.
Saving and Sewing Clevsr seed.
In scouring clever seed it is best te out
it as seen as the buds become brown.seme
time in September. If out later the heavy
dews and reduced heat of the sun will
cause dampness and the hull te cling very
tightly te the heads. When cut, it
is recommended te be at once put
under cover te secure dryness; some
put in stacks or cover with straw. If
the ground is dry and the sun is het, it
may be hauled in the same day it is cut.
Seme farmers cut it aud stir it and put it
in windrows the same as making hay ;
but this is a waste of seed, as tbe stirring
rattles off the ripest and best of the seed.
In moving it te the barn, it can be stored
en the barn fleer until ready te thresh. If
there is no huller in the neighborhood,
enough can be threshed out for one's sewn
sewing ; and, as it will net be very clean,
it should be sewn in February or earlier,
se that the bulls and the seed may settle
in the srreund and germinate as seen as
the soil is warm enough, giving it a geed
start, which is almost certain te produce a
geed crop.
Onion Culture.
We knew very few staple .crops that de
serve the atteutieu of the farmers in this
section of the ceun'ry better that the
erdinarv onion, although it appears te
have received comparatively little atten
tien by the writers en horticulture, and it
certainly cuts no large figure in these sta
tistical reports of local matters, and yet
there can be no sort of doubt that the
onion is a crop, the demand for which is
always steady at prices that are sure te be
remunerative te the producer. Many years
age this particular crop received special
attention in the state of Connc.eticut,
where its culture was developed te such au
extent that the Wetherafield onions be.
came quite celebrated all ever the United
States. Since that date the onion bas be bo be
ceme a regular and reliable crop of the
farmers in me&t parts of the Northern
states, although still regarded as an article
of miner importance te the ordinary
truck farmer. Why this should be se we
really de net knew, for the onion is one of
the most valuable anti scerbutics known
te modern medical science, which fact
ought te be sufficient te insure its univer
sal use for sanitary purposes by all who
have a proper regard for health.
Save the Ooinledder.
There will be as geed a crop of corn
fodder this year as most years, hence it
behooves every farmer te leek te its care
ful preservation, which is net always done
as well as it should ee. it is true tne lou
der is a heavy article te handle, unless the
husking is deferred te a period when the
fodder becomes somewhat dry, sometimes
a little meuldy, and then it is frequently
left in the field until the latter part of
November or beginning of December,
greatly te its injury. The corn itself,
when the husking is deferred, irequently
becomes meuldy, and its' value deteriora deteriera
ed. It is better te husk it as seen after
the stalks are cut and the grains have be
come hardened, and crib at once. This
allows the air te pass through the mass
freely aud dries it gradually and safely.
All farmers, who have any experience in
leeding geed corufedder, must admit that
cattle prefer it te the best clever hay, and
it is fully as milk producing and mere se
when the stalks are cut, steamed and
slightly salted. They will then eat up all
that is thus prepared ler tnem ana lonve
upon it. We knew this as well from our
own experience as the experience of
ethers. Cornfedder is net, therefore,
merely worth being cured in the best
manner, but it should be an object of real
concern with all who keep cattle, equally
as much as with clever hay. It is net
pleasant then, te see se many fields of fod
der everywhere ever the country mould meuld
ing and spoiling late in November, or even
the' forepart of December, merely for the
Hake of a little additional labor te preserve
it as it should be, by storing it away te
help out the winter's stock of cattle feed.
Insects and Healthy Tegetanen.
There are English writers and apparently
intelligent men who contend that plants
are generally deceased before insects attack
them, and that it we can jceep tnem m
wayB in the highest condition of health
they will receive perfect immunity from
insect ravages. We de net knew much of
the tastes of British inseets, but we de verily
believe that American insects de net step
te consider whether the plant is in a weak
condition or net, but feed straight through
just as a cow would go straight through a
cabbage patch, or the historic animal
browses en its bed of Canada thistles.
Tbe grasshopper sweeps all before him,
and the army worm fellows his example.
The wary beetle defoliates every tree it
comes te, and the rose bug hardly waits te
inquire into the vital condition of its feed,
but geed naturedly takes the first bush it
comes te.
It is se with the smaller kinds of insects
which take te our garden fruits and
flowers. The aphis swarms en the health
iest rose-bud : the red spider swarms en
everr blade of its favorite plants: and
ence introduce the bark scale into your
fruit orchard and let it alone, and the re
sult will be that every tree, sick or well,
in time will get covered with it. We sup
pose there are some inseets wmen are en
the lookout for decaying matter. It is net
probable that nature orders any system of
society, whether in the most minute or
highly organized forms of life; but she
takes care te introduce a set et scavengers
as well as ether useful beings in these
classes, as we find in ours. But that in
sects are generally scavengers, or, in pre
portion te then? numbers, any considerable
number of species could be furnished
which call for diseased vegetation first,
last and all the time, is an idea tee pre
posterous for belief in the light of every
day facts. Ne, gentleman. If you want
towage a successful insect war, attack
the enemy direct. Yeu will gain little by
attempting te bring up plant vitality te
it is that an Eastern farmer who pays 100
an acre for his land and can sell hay for
25 per ten, can raise timothy te send
te Western farmers and yet make a profit.
This is & small Question, but it has a great
bearing en the whole difference between
Eastern and Western agriculture. As a
general thing Eastern farcing is a busi
ness, conducted as most businesses are
net te be sere with as much tact and
judgment as it ought te be and as some of
the leading and intelligent agricultural
papers and agricultural people hope te
bring it up te but still considerably of a
business. As a general thing Western
farming is a series of moves and experi
ments. The Western farmer knows little
and cares less as te hew plants feed, or
what it is that enriches the seu. He
knows that his ground is naturally rich,
and that its product will "beat all crea
tion," and perhaps send a derisive letter
te the local paper of his old home in re
gard te their worrying ever the small
manure heaps, when their only worry is
hew te get rid of the big nuisance. The
character of his associate farmers does net
worry him either much, nor either does the
markets. If land is "cheap" and "fer
tility " great, ether considerations are of
miner import. This is net of course uni
versal ; but we believe it is the rule. The
Eastern man, en the ether hand, takes
nearness te market as among the first
considerations. He would rather buy a
place at $150 per acre, or pay a heavy rent
for one, near te a large city, or near te a
thriving, go-ahead community, where
everybody as well as himself was bent en
building up a place irrespective of what
the price of grain or perk might be at
Liverpool, except as it might affect the
movements of the Western people anxious
for that trade ; and he uses in his business
all that thought which studies hew 10
make one thing work in with another.
Cern growing here is a better illustration
than even raising timothy seed. We knew
lets of farmersjenland worth $500 per acre,
who make just as mueh profit from com
ns the Western farmer does ; and that tee,
though they seldom beast of their one or
two hundred bushels te the acre, acd have
te be contented with from fifty te seventy
five ; but they take care te keep the
ground in geed condition ; leek well after
the growth ana care 01 tne cermuuuer, km
most generally take a crop of pumpkins
from the ground in equal value te the
fodder and a geed deal mere. But this is
net all ; be grows all sorts of little things,
whieh fill in odd timeB and for which there
in uennmllv a market : and if near a very
thriving place can even hire out his teams
once in awhile, or even tne service t u
mnn. and in this way nothing is wasted,
and all things work together for geed.
Thus he seen learns that the price of the
land or its original native fertility is net of
first consideration in the matter of profit
able farming. He learns tee, that in cal
culating the profits of farming, it is no
safe rule te judge by what any single acre
yields as a set off against any single acre s
expense ; but hew and.in what way the
whole works together for a profitable end.
Thus it is that the Eastern farmer flour
ishes despite high priced land, high taxes
and high fashions, whieh often run his
family into terrible expenditures. He
learns that it is net the money made en
farm the aetual produce of certain crops
which makes him rich, but the waste
utilized. He simply turns into profit that
which is of no use whatever te the West
ern man. This is the secret of the timothy
mystery and many mere mysteries of the
same kind.
