WHI!
Many a monk of olden time,
Dwelling amid the cloister shade,
lias wen a creirn that ne'er can tade,
And wears a royal robe sublime.
Bis lights were fancy, but te nlm
They were the beacons In the night.
That led his weary footsteps right right
Net waning tapers low and dim.
The painted robes that deck'd a saint.
The pallor of a chlsl'd brew.
Brought adoration made him bow,
And beg some penance, some restraint.
The knotted scourge, the wasting fast.
The hours of prayer en floors of stone,
The world push'd back, the aim alone
Te gain salvation's rest at last.
Yet we who have our guldlnglight
Before us, pointing out the way,
Bevert cur eyes, our t oetsleps stray.
And we are groping through the night.

We have seen in the public press refer
ences te some late endeavor at " common
sense dress " for women. Why, in the
name of all that is reasonable and sensible,
can we net have common sense dress for
men ? We have lately heard that some
long-headed clothier predicts a speedy
return te " small oletheB ;" and, what
with the help of the bicycle and yachting
uniform, and the prevalent tendeney
among boys toward long stoekings and
knee breeches, why man net a reform in
this respect be seen achieved ? It will, of
oeurse, be at once objected that legs, in
general, are net geed enough te bear se
truth-telling a style of covering. But te
thiB there are two replies : First, that
probably, with the attention bestowed
upon physical culture, there are as many
geed legs new as ever there were ; and
second, that once the novelty worn off, no
mere thought would be given te the sub
ject than new is bestowed upon whether
ears are large or small, or hands gonteel
or eawky.
We doubt if it be possible te array the
masculine figure at once mere comfortably
and becomingly than was done 100 years
age in long Bteckings, breeches, some
what prolonged vest, or doublet, and a
bread skirted, handy, big-pocketed jerkin
or coat, crowned with a roomy chapeau or
soft hat. The test of sculpture and paint
ing is a geed one te aid in determining
what is permanently comely. And, while
it would bs hard te overstate the stiff and
repulsive ungainliness of a man modeled
into a statue in the full dress suit and hat
of our day, one does net seen tire of look
ing at pictures like these of Franklin and
Dr. Jehnsen, or even of the profuse, yet
still comely, exaggerations of costume of
Charles II and his court.

New Yerk Tribune.
A barber in t prominent hotel said te a
Tribune reporter who had noticed the fre
quent " tips " that he received : " We
don't make as much as you think we de.
The pay in the best hotels is $2 a day and
we get from $1 te $1:50 extra in fees.
Sunday work earns us our days off. Hew
many customers a day ? About thirty,
averaging up the time taken te cut hair,
shampoo, etc. Ne, we have no brother
hood or association. We had one a few
years age, but it came te an end. Pay us
te strike ? Hardly. Hundreds of men
would be ready te fill my place within a
day. Sometimes we are called te private
residences. Then we get fifty cents a
shave, at times $1. We have te furnish
our own tools razors, scissors, etc. and
that costs about $5 per month, outside of
the $50 capital necessary te start us. Of
course every geed barber has his regular
customers, but it wouldn't pay te start a
shop of your own, as few of these custom
ers would fellow you ; they get used te a
place, you sen, and dislike te change
Why is a shampoo charged forty cents
when a ' hair cut ' is also forty cents ?
Well, we don't make much en the ' hair
cut,' and se we even it up en the sham
poe."

THE PECULIAR
It was one of the peculiarities or the old-fashioned doctors that never would tell their
patients what they were prescribing ler them. They said it would de the patients no geed
te knew, and that It would only be gratifying a foolish curiosity. In order te keep patients
from knowing, they would write the prescriptions in deg-Latin, se that most patients could
net read them. All that sort et thing is new ever. The patient wants te knew whit he
takes. He is weak, and wants te be strong, or he is dyspeptic, and wants te dlge-t well
Or he has a troublesome liver which he wants te put te rights. Se he takes Brewn's' Iren
Bitters about which there Is no mystery at at all. This is the best preparation of iron in the
world. In combination with gentle yet efflclent, tenlcs. It gives strength. It builds uP
