THIS IRONSIDE VS. THE ALTUONA.
The champion Amateer Gleb of the mate
IJeitcn by tbe Irenitde by tbe
Score of 0 te 4,
Tbe Alteena club, which are considered
the finest amateurs in tbe 6tate, stepped in
Lancaster yesterday for two days practice
games. The first one was played yester
day, and much te the enprise of everybody
the Mountain city giants were beaten
badly in a hotly contested game by tbe
Ironsides. Everybody was anxious te sep
the game, but almost everybody felt con
fident that the Altoenas would win easily
and these who did net quit as lasers last
evening. Tbe visitors were outplayed
by the plucky Ironsides and the AltoenaB
were as much Fiirprised as the audience.
Owing te the great reputation which pre
ceded tbe Altoenas everybody was anxious
te see them and the crowd in attendance
was therefer e very large. Tbe visitors
presented Yarnalll&te of the Anthracite,
and Ardncr as their batteryf Brown and
Manlevc being reserved for te-day's game.
The home team managed te pound Yar
nail for six base hits with a total of ten,
and Ardner bad a number of passed balls.
HofFerd and Sixsmith were the home
team's battcrv and they played an excel
lent game. The fielding of tbe whole
nine was very One. Miller, the new man,
played second, and although be had sev
eral errors be made a number of brilliant
plays, and be did mere work in that posi
tion than any man who had been there
for seme tiras. Oldfleld, Schiller and
Kelly took this honors at the bat for the
home team, the first named making a
three badger and the ethers each a two.
The game was called promptly at 3:45
by Jenes, the umpire, and no runs were
Bcered until the second inning. Sixsmith
opened it with a ball which was fumbled
by Ake, and reached first, but was put out
at home plate after Ardner had thrown te
first. Hoffei d went out en a fly and Miller
and Kelley went te base en balls. At this
juncture Old Held came en and made a tre
mendeus hit te right field, bringing Miller
and Kelly in and putting himself en third
Zechcr put the side out by going out en
strikes. The visite s scored one run in the
next inning. Manlove went out en a fly
te Sweitzer, Brown made bis first en a
small ball but went out en second, Ake
reached second en Sweitzer's threw te
first and get horns en a passed ball of Six
smith's, Yarnell going out en Strikes.
Neither club scored in the next two in
ningp. In the fifth Smith and Bradly made
geed hits. Ardner's fly was muffed by
llyman, who threw Bradley out at second.
Weeds' hit brought Ardner and Smith in
while he h melf put tbe side out by
failing le i.ch second befere the
ball from Sixsmith. Yarnell having
goae out en &.rikcs. Neither club
accurcd anything in the sixth inuing but
in the seventh the Ironsides get their
work in. Kelly and Oldfleld went te base
en balls and Zechcr en a fumble by the
second baseman. With these three en the
bases aurt the fielders of the visiters
Swcitzer went in and sent a daisy ball te
centre field out of the reach of every one
and brought Kelly and Oldfield in.
Schiller vrin en, en a bhert fly.
llyman en stiikes and Zecber endeavoring
te steal third. In the eighth inning the
visitors wcre again blanked, but the home
club wero mere fortunate, and made two
nins en a base hit. and two passed balls by
the catcher HofTerd and Miller scoring.
In the ninth inning Ake of the visiteis
scored en Smith's hit. The score in detail

The Anthracite club will play no mere
interstate championship game at Potts Petts Petts
ville because of the peer support afforded
by the citizens of that town. The ground
at Atlantic City has been rented for the
remainder of the season and the majority
of the games scheduled te be played at
Pottsville will be played there.
In the score of the baseball a number of
errors against the pitchers are for allow
ing batters te take their base en balls.
Kelly, of the Ironsides, had a i ere arm
j csterday ; he batted left handed when he
hit Yarnall for a two bagger.
The Ironsides are playing their second
game with the Alteena this afternoon ;
the visitors feel very badly ever yesterday's
defeat and will de their best te win this
afternoon. Their club will be greatly
strengthened by the placing of Brown and
Matdove in as the battery. HofTerd and
Jenes will fill tuese positions for the Iren
sides, as Sixsmith's hands are badly used
up.
Tbe Atlantics of Brooklyn will play here
en Monday and Tuesday next, and games
willbecaret.it 3:15.
The Ironsides will appear in their bran
new suits, which they stand in need of
badly, en Monday. They will consist of
gray pants, white shuts, red belts and
stockings.
