An editorial in the September Century discusses "The Temperance Outlook" with the following conclusiens: "That the temperance question should be made a political question is most desirable. Ne question mere vitally concerns the whole country with respect te its highest welfare. We shenld have temperance men in office, and temperance laws enacted. Bat tem perance most be temperance. It most be a sensible and practical scheme that sensi. ble)and practical men will support which shall bring about the desired reformation. It most be a scheme whieb the great majority of moral men will rec ognize te be sound in its logic and even in its justice. Any thing else than this may, under pressure of an excitement, achieve a temporary suc cess, but only this will be a permanent cure of the rampant abomination. The liquor men are new mere defiant and mere numerous, in proportion te the population, than in any former period. They work their criminal mills openly in the face of all, and we see the streams of vice and crime pouring forth from these sources te lay waste the community and overwhelm the dikes which philanthropy has eieeted. The courts, the police and the pub pub He officers generally, seeing the bold mien of these disturbers of the peaee, find it easier for their weak natures te humor them and te connive at their wicked works than te oppose them. The great majority of the community are thus oppressed and tyrannized ever by this minority, who laugh at law and hound the defenders of the law. The only end of this enormity will be in the union of ths mojerity, and this can never be effected by extreme measures or fanatical pronun prenun pronun ciamentes. Discrimination between liq uors that are hurtful and these that are (in moderate use), healthful ; discrimina tieu between modes of drinking, as treat ing and drinking at meals ; dis crimination between places for drinking only and places for lunch or dinner ; dis crimination between drinking en the premises where the liquor is sold and drinking it at home ; discrimination be tween day and night in the sale these and ether like discriminations are te be made in place of the sweeping demands of the ultra men if a union of temperance forces is te be consummated. Without this union the evil must go en prepagat ing itself daily, anl en the se called temperance leaders must rest the blame. They have constituted an unreasonable shibboleth. When they abandon that the enemy will be conquered, unless mean while the enemy shall have conquered all the ground and made our land a moral desert. Admirable laws, exactly suited te diminish the curse aud destroy the political power of the rum interests, have been introduced into the New Yerk Leg. islatnre, and would have been enacted but for the solid vote against them of the so se called temperance members, diiected by their "tempsranue' ' constituency at home. This class of reformers will have their zeal intensified by the acMen of Kau-as aud Iowa, and they may carry a few mere of the states. Would te Ged their success were really success, that the rum interest were stricken te the heart by it ! But net until the reaction takes place, and these men are couviuced of their error aud are ready te build ou truth aud net en ini pulse, can we expect that uuieu of all geed elements which will finally dig the grave of rum and bury him beyond all resurrection." Hatha Hie hands In Darbys Prophylactic Fiuidand no contagion will attack you. Would Have Been set Upen. Had net Burdock Bleed Bitters been a re medy of unquestionable merit tney would have been set down upon by the publfc ns thousands et medicines have been when their werthlcssuess was discovered. LIKE AN EVIL SPIRIT. Jn olden times It was thought that evil spirits came In through cracks and keyholes The generally approved way te keep them out was te plug up the keyholes and step the cracks with cotton. Notwithstanding these preventive measures, the evil things had their own way and often came In as they pleased. Se comes malaria new-a-days. We try te keep It out or the key-hole and It comes In by the crack. We step up the crack, and Ie! It comes from a leak in the plumbing, or an opening from some neglected drain, or lrem some unsuspected source and unguarded direction. We cannot always keep malaria out,"but we can give it battle and drive Its effects irem our systems. If Brown's Iren Bittebs is taken in time, malaria has net a ghost el a chance.
