Aflerlda SUetca et m IJrlrut Little Xepy and or Her Fatnetic Fate. Hamilton Jay In Philadelphia Times. Who she- was and where she came from was always a mystery te us. Her coming was as unexpected as a summer shower, and turned out te be as fully grateful. The circumstances of her arrival among us were out of the usual line, and the result a blessing in disguise. One languid, sultry day in August, we were all sitting en the wide, roomy piazza, eager te catch every flutter of breeze that might arise, when a tern and dusty little figure opened the gate and came down the path. Flinging herself wearily beiere us she said : "My name's Cah'liue, an' I want te stay widyeu." It was a child of about twelve years, smalf and delicate looking, black as the shadow of midnight, bat with a bright, pleasant face, and small features almost Caucasian in their outlines. The child was half starved and evidently worn out by a long and toilsome journey, and her faculties at first seemed te be iu a half benumbed state. All that we could obtain from her in the way of information was that her name was Cah'line. A geed bath and a generous meal ere atcd such a wonderful transformation in her that the head of affairs decided te keep her, and se Cah'line became the chirp girl of our little household. She proved te be very faithful and affectionate, quick aud willing te learn, very clean and neat in her person and habits and exceed ingly handy in her small but useful sphere. With the cows and calves she early made friends, giving names of her own in ventien te them all, which they readily lcaired te recognize, particularly when a slice of watermelon was the reward. She knew all the places where the hens were accustomed "te lay ; would crawl under the barn or ether buildings, through high weeds and brambles in shady fenca corners, and always with success, mean while crooning te herself a song, wh030 burden was: Get ye ready. Get ye ready. You'll have te take a little mero bread, Fer dar ain't no c!abb6f here ! Even the wisest old hen knew that it was a waste of time te try and hide her nest from the sharp, keen eye3 of Cah'line. The family deg, a wise, well bred and gentlemanly terrier, regarded her at first with grave doubts and dignified suspicion, but seen became her sworn ally, aud the tv70 had many a happy romp togcther. Differing strangely from all ethers of her race whom we had known, the watermelon in the various stages et its growth and beauty had for her no charms ; her palate barely tolerated corn bread and rejected hominy altogether. But a slice of cake was te her a glimp30 of heaven aud a piece of candy a symphony of surpassing i.wcetness. fler leve of finery was strongly developed, and her pride aud satisfaction unbounded in a pair of flaming t-carlct garters, although she did net con sider the usual accompaniment of stock hips at all necessary. She early learned te sew, aud get along very well in that line, with the exception of an unusual parsimony in regard te stitches. Her language was replete with rich similes aud idioms of the met amusing kind. fler affection fei her misttess was gen uine and intense. Sometimes she would steal ceftly uu behind and slip her arms abent her mistress' waist, and when the latter would mildly expostulate at the familiarity she would say, "Ob, Mis3 Lizzie, de let me alone ; yen knew I leve you se much." Always bright aud cheeiful anil talka tive, she gave Ine and animation te our household all adults and was treated mete as ene of tbe family than as a ser vant and of the despised race. She was very liberal iu regard te the letters of the alphabet and seldom used tbe pronoun "it" without bestowing upon it the extra letter "h." Fer inr.tance, her mibtress would a-k the question, " Cah' line, wheie is the water rail ?' aud the answer would be, "Youner hit, light byde deer." In buildiug fires she was an expert and in her hands a few slivers of pine would develop unusual powers of combustion. She was proficient also in the ruder elements of cookery, such as frying ' hog meat" and makiti!' I-W2 celUrds tender and succulent. She was a handy milker and seemed te possess a faculty of leaseaing and a power of scductive persuasion that would event ually bring the most refractory and impsu itcntcew te terms. Te see her cat rying watermelons te her favorite cows was a picture in itself. She would walk from the lower field of the plantation te the honse with a melon under each arm and one balanced caiefully en her head. Going te the front gate she would cal! the cows by name and they would run te meet her. steppintr at a respsctful disUnej te receive the delicious morsels thrown te them. Her special faverite among the maek maek eyed kine were called by the euphonious names of "Kcddy" aud "Slew feet." The latter name was evidently the inspiration of seme inuate spark of genius. The plantation of whiah she wa3 a part and parcel was very near a railroad, and seme attention and labor was necessary te keep the cattle from reaming en the track while trains were passing and this duty fell te tbe share of Cah'line. One day we heard an unusual commo tion en the track, a succession of shrill whistles and then a sudden stoppage of the traiu. We arrived there in time te see a tern and mangled form taken out from under the cruel wheels. As we bent ever it in tears the pain-stricken eyes, ever which the gray film of death was slowly dtifting, opened, and the peer voice faint ly whispered te her loved mistress : "Miss Lizzie, I couldn't cit ole Slew-feet effen de track." A tremor shook the peer, broken frame and the eyes closed this life ferever, te open where He who said " Suffer little children te unto Me." and did net mean the upon livetli come wliite i Miilrlrnn nlnnn. Within the memory of thousands of tbe readers of the Ledger, Lancaster county in this state was the banner wheat country in the United States ; but the great wheat raising section has since then moved west ward through Ohie, Indiana, Illinois te the Kansas Iowa-Minnesota district ; and the last decade has seen the tremendous development of California as a grain grow ing state, and the rapid rise of the North ern Pacific wheat fields. Anether great grain field, vast enough te effect the supply and consumption of the world, and te enter into serious com petition with the United States and Russia the two leading wheat exporting coun tries of the world new shows in sight in Mexico, and appears te be coming te the front as part of the great commercial and industrial reconstruction of that land by the' American railways. The physical formation of Mexico is simply an exten sion southward of the great Colerado mountain base plateau. Wheat grows en the plateau of Mexico at from 6,000 te 9,000 feet above sea level, and between the 18th and 24th parallels of latitude. Cern grows everywhere, except en certain waste districts along the north ern frontier, where the Beil is the same as the alkali plains of Arizona and New Mexico. The wheat grow ing area of Mexico, par excellence, extends from, say I'uoble nearly te Celima, about 500 miles east and west and, from Southern Michoacan Zacatecas, about 400 miles north' and south. This plateau is broken by mountain ranges into a number of rich districts specially adapted for the growing of wheat, namely the Lamia valley, roughly, 200 by IC miles; the Bajie (northern Michoacan, Jalisco and Southern Guanajuata) 200 by 200 miles, Aguasca lientes 50 by 50 miles ; the San Luis Potosi and Queretare district 150 by 30 nniles. Total, say 52,000 square miles. Of this immense field of rich and arable land ene third, it is believed, could be readily put iute wheat with due regard te the ether agricultural interests of the country. Under the Mexican plan of cultivation three crops are takeu off the land every two years one crop et wheat and two ci eps of corn. The average wheat yield of Mexico new does net exceed 20 bushels te the acre. Cern en irrigated laud runs about 50 ; en dry laud about 30 bushels te the acre. The mode of cultivation is simi lar te that of the Egyptiaus thousands of years age. Woedeu beam plows are used, with a small iron shoe, which seratches a furrow five inches bread by five deep. Five men are used and five yeke of oxen, where ene would be needed in Pennsylvania. Nevertheless, the wheat raised is of the very finest quality. At the Centennial oxpesitiou Mexico took the first price for wheat. Threshing is dene by driving mares areuud evor a circular tile or stone fleer, winnowing by men tossieg the grain and chaff iute the air with scoop shovels, and transportation from the field te the farm house or railway station is ou pon derous two wheeled ex carts, in which the ex pulls about threo pounds of cart te ene pound of lead. Apart from the 52,000 sqture miles spoken of abeve, which is the choice wheat producing area, thera is sufficient eutlyinji wheat, barley aud corn laud new under actual cultivation te supply the present population of Mexico, ten mil lions. These peeple are at present fed en grain raised just whero they live, thexe having beeu up te this time uu organized machiuery for transportation of products from ene part of the country te the ether. Mexico is substantially a corn-fed nation, soven-eighlhs or iuoie of the people living habitually en tortillas. Were tlm wheat area cultivated te its full capacity, namely 17,333i square miles, it is estimated that it would yield, under present conditions, 20 bushels of wheat and 40 bushels of corn per acre, as fellows : First year, wheat crop, 221,8CC,GC0 bushels. First year, corn cr p, 133,733,320 bush els. Sseeud yetr, or:i crop, 433,733,320 bushelf-. Or siy ai .ivjrae of 110,003,000 bushels of wheat and 440.000.000 bushels of corn every year. But under the modern conditions of agriculture, with improved machinery and systematic feeding of thn soil", a much larger yield is anticipated. By the end of 1834 Mexico will probably enjoy a reason ably thorough railway system, Viz , two trunk lines at least, from the capital te the United State.s, having also geed branch lines te the gulf ports of Vera Cruz, Tam Tam pice, Matamoras and Corpus Christi. The laud jr .Mcxie is largely held in huge estates, elten like thesa of the great land owners of England. The Bustamcnte estate, for instance, extends ever portions of three states, and the line of the Nation al 1 ail way 1 tins through it for fifty milep. These vast estates, with the fact that in the central part of Mexico at least, they are of clearer land, will enable the wheat tn owing area te be put rapidly under cul tivatieu when once the railsways open tip a market for wheat. The Mexican wheat raiser, however, ia seriously handicapped iu oae tespact, 1. 0., by the vicious system of state taxes which prevails all evor the republic. Some states tax the production of wheat, ethors the -importation of it into or tnreugu tueir borders. This tax is uncertain, varies with every state, and i3 burdenseme. Men who have lived long in Mexico, aud are well acquainted with the country, allege that it is well nigh impossible te codify or keep traek of these state imposts which are laid without system or any bread knowledge of political economy. They compute, hovvevcr, that they can be roughly estimated at about ene per cent, en the value of nearly everything raised or brought into the state. This is one of the things which keeps Mexico se peer, relatively te her large population and im mense resources. UuckleiTs Arnica Halve. The greatest mcclcal wonder of the world.
