TUESDAY KVKHINO, AUG. 21, 188?,
M1IGBKLL, THE PK1ZB MOHTEB.
Wltn tb MaMer of as KeglUh Oeatleman
A short time age two young ladies of
the highest fashiea and their mother were
starting from New Yerk te Newport by
the evening beat. The air was warm and
fine, and the passengers were en the
upper deck enjoying the breeze. Among
them was a young Englishman wheBe
nationality was evident from his appear appear
anee and accent. He was dressed in the
hiffhest stele of the Londen mode, and,
though without beard or moustache, his
figure was of remarkably athletic build,
and great coils of muscles showed nnder
his well fitting coat. Directly the party
spoken of came near where he was sitting,
and, with unusual politeness in an Eng
lishman, he rose ana offered the eldest of
the ladies his chair, and hunted up seats
for the ethers. Glancing at him, and ob
serving his well kept appearance and
manner of a gentleman, the youngest of
the ladies, after thanking him for
his courtesy, commenced a conversa
tion. She inquired if he knew
Lord Sc-andSe, and the young man
said he did ; that he had met the noble
man in question frequently at the gymna
sium. The inquiries went en. The young
gentleman seemed te knew nearly all the
nobility, but none of the ladies, their
wives or sisters. YisienB of a great lord
traveling inceg, possessed the girls. Hew
they would triumph ever the ethers in
having met him first ! Being asked hew
long he meant te be at Newport, the
young man replied that be did net knew.
He only came en a brief visit ; having
never been there he wished te see the
place before going home. He was then
asked if he was intending te visit any one?
He said no ; that he had no acquaintances
in the place. The young ladies then be
gan te assure him that society at Newport
was very charming indeed. The young
man said in a well bred way that he had
no doubt of it, but that as he had no
friends there he could hardly expect te be
presented te its fascinations. The conver
sation ran along, and late in the evening,
when he rose te say geed night, the
mother said te him that he had been ex
tremely polite te herself and daughters,
and trusted they might have the pleasure
of returning his courtesy by receiving him
at their cettaze. The young fellow
blushed, Bmiled a little, and said if his
time permitted he would avail himself of
their courtesy. And se they parted, the
ladies net even knowing his name. Se
sure were they that he was at least a
nobleman that they had really asked him
te their house without even knowing who
be was. Several days after the youngest
daughter, who had been greatly impressed
by the Englishman, was out with some
young people in a coach, the driver of
which was a well known young man
of wealth in New Yerk. Coming up
along the cliffs the party get out, and
were observing one of the finest spa views
in America, when they saw stauding near
them a stranger who had net yet seen the
patty. Turning te leave, the stranger saw
the young lady he had met en the beat.
She bowed cordially, and he hesitating a
little, gracefully returned the salutation.
The driver of the caach was amazed.
" Why," Baid he te her, ''de you knew
him?" "Oh yes," she glibly answered;
" he is a charming young gentleman who
came down with us, and made himself
very agreeable." " Well, " said he, " de
you knew his name ?" She said she did
net. "Then let me tell you who it is.
That is Charlej Mitchell, the prize-fighter,
the champion of all England." Mitchell
leeks mero like a' life guardsman than a
pugilist. In fact there is nothing of the
shoulder-hitter in his appearance or man
ner, and he is a man of line education,
and the Prince of Wales has had him at
luncheon mero than once.
Twe afternoons after this meeting the
ladies before mentioned were en their
piazza, when the young man came up the
walk. Tbe one who had met him had net
said a word of her adventure, be the
ethers were in perfect iguorance of the
meeting en the cliff. The mother greeted
him cordially, as did the elder daughter.
He glanced at the ether girl. Her face
was crimson, but she did net come for
ward and speak te him. Leeking at her
a moment with a half smile of
contempt he said : " Madame, I
could net leave without acknowledg
ing your very polite attention in
inviting me te your house when you did
net even knew my nance I am a gentle
man, however, though just new I am net
in what you call society. My father is a
clcrgymau of the English church and in
geed standing, and his name is Mitchell."
"Well, Mr. Mitchell," said the mether
with a smile, " why are you net in so
ciety ?" "Because I am at present a prize
fighter," said be gravely. With a quick
wit that did her credit, the lady answered,
" That is a sufficient reason. If I bad
known that, of course, I should net have
asked you te my house. But new that
you are here, pray sit down." (He hurt
been standing all the time.) "Ne," said
he, "I have done my errand;" and he
bowed te the ladies who had spoken te
him, and without a glance at the ether
went away.

T.Tinil AN EVIL SPIRIT.
In olden times It was theughVfjat evil spirit
The generally approved way te kfeep them out was te plug up the keyholes and step the
cracks with cotton. Notwithstanding these preventive measures, the evil things had then
own way and elten came in as they pleased.
Se comes malaria new-a-days. We try te keep it out of the key-hole and it comes in by
tbe crack. We step up the crack, and le ! it comes from a leak in the plumbing, or an opening
from some neglected drain, or from some unsuspected source and unguarded direction.
We cannot always keep malaria out, but we can give It battle and drive its effects lrem
our systems. If Brewic's Iren Brrnxs is taken in time, malaria has net a ghost ela chance.
