LEAF TOBACCO.
NEW TOKK ANU LANOASTKK MAKKET.
Seed Leal, satnatra and Havana ter the
Week Ending Saturday, August 18,
10 a. at.
U. S. Tobacco Journal.
Again mere " looking" tban buying
was done in ear market this week. A few
out of town buyers showed themselves,
bnt purchased triflingly.
Sampling of the new tobacco is going
en vigorously, giving the owners ample
cbance te form ideas about their balance
sheets. The '82 Pennsylvania, as a whole
turns out slick and neat ; here and there
the tobacco has suffered from an ever-
sweat, causing the leaves te stick together
and tear if net delicately handled.
The '82 New Yerk Big Flats, as well as
the Havana seed, is satisfactory In every
respect. The prices demanded for the
sumo are higher than these for '82 Penn
sylvania ; therefore, unless brought te a
level with the latter tobacco it has less
chance of sale for some time te ceme.
The few scattered parcels of '82 Wiscon
sin in this market have no further interest
te the trade in general.
The '82 Ohie held in this city has among
it a few thousand cases exceedingly hand
some tobacco, while all else is geed and in
price rcasonable material for the manu
facturer of cheap cigars.
The '82 Connecticut is, as a whole, con
sidered 'a failure. Seme of the Housa Heusa
tonic Havana seed is useful stock for fine
cigars. There are also some few lets of
East Hartferd growth that are without
any fault ; but, as a whole, the tobacco is
thick and gummy, and its burning is un
reliable. Resweating may save some of
this stock from being sold at the lowest
Ohie prices. This tobacco when green
posited features which, te an observing
and intelligent buyer, were indications of
its unreliability ; but greed, coupled with
the mountainous arrejranca and stupidity
that characterizes a goad portion of the
leaf packers, was the incentive for the
lightning speed with which this tobacco
was taken from the growers' hands at the
most ridiculously high prices.
It will be seen that there cxista no glut
of tine seed leaf tobacco and that very,
seen, especially when the sampling season
is ever, our market will resound with the
hum of business.
Sumatra' continues te sell draggingly.
There has been no parceptible rise in fig
ures since the ucw law went into effect,
and even the report of heavy sales en the
ether sides at high prices passed the mar
ket almost unnoticed. As long as the
heavy stock en hand diminishes at the
present slew rate, and as leug as the auc
tion sales in Helland of the present crop
continue there will be no ascending of
figures here. The general expectations
that the next auction sales will be at lower
prices.
The sales of the woek wero :
Pennsylvania Crep '82200 cases, at
1GJ te 18 cents.
Urep '80 -'81 300 cases, at 9 te 14 cents.
Connecticut Crep '82200 cases, mo me

Ohie Crep '82400 cases, at 4 te 8
cents ; wrappers, at 12 te 17 cents.
Sumatra Sales 150'ba!es, at$l te $1.50.
Havana Maiketvery quiet. Sales 300

Advices received from Amsterdam arc
te the effect that at the saJe of Sumatra

August, prices were exceedingly high for

duty en that article in the United States.

Leaf
Seed Leaf Helders of '83 !taf feel very
well, as that crop is doing hotter than was
expected by the most confident, especially
Wisconsin Havana seed. Seme of the
holders of 'SI Pennsylvania have made a
thorough cxa.uiu.itum as te the present
condition el that much abused crop after
it has passed through the second sweat.
They lepert it very handsome anil full of
meiit. We shall 820 knowingly ifmauu

fair amount of stock i3 being daily pur

Stocks are veiy generally well selected.

Twe Leading Tobacco Markets el Vlrelnla.
Lynchburg is recognized as ene of the
leading tobacco marts of Virginia, with
Danville in close proximity, and it rival.
Each pretends te leadership, and accord
ing te the revenue .returns Danville ap
pears te lead Lynchburg. Beth cities run
about $15,000 weekly into Uncle Samuel's
treasury Danville averaging about a
thousand dollars ever Lynchburg ; but
this is said te be somewhat fictitious se
far as judgment of sales is concerned. The
speculative spirit of. Danville, it is said,
causes considerable of the tobacco brought
in by the farmers te be resold, thus ac
counting for their alleged larger sales, but
at Lynchburg this is never the case. The
revenue returns, of course, only show hew
much tobacco is manufactured at the two
places net that sold and Danville iu
this takes the lead, having fully as many
manufactories as Lynchburg aud mere
warehouses. The tobacco sales are con
ducted by auction. Large quantities are
brought in by the farmers leta of from
25 te 2.500 pounds, or even mere ; and
these are ranged in the auction wareheuse
side by side, net in samples, bnt the whole
let large or smalL The lets are num
bered, and the buyer gees from pile te
pile, with the auctioneer, bidding. He has,
of course, previously looked the tobacco
ever and knows what te offer. The
Lynchburg tobacco is very dark and sells
en an average for about seven cents per
pound. Danville enjoys a monopoly en
what is called the "Yellow L3af," a much
finer grade than that sold at Lynchburg;
and this averages about twelve cents per
pound. The' leaf manufactured brings
from eighty cents te one dollar per pound.
Fer the present season Lynchburg expects
her sales te amount te 30,000,000 pounds,
and Danville te 30,000,000 pounds. !
Tne Lancaster Tobacco Market.
Nothing of any consequence has been
doing in old leaf during the 'past week.
Of course there have been a few sales .en
!
private terms, but they indicate nothing
of importance te the trade. The inquiry
among buyers of old tobacco is principally
for low grade goods they being unwilling
te pay the prices demanded by packers for
their higher grades. The manufacturers
are very busy, however, and there will
probably be a better market by and by.
The crop of '82 continues te meet favor faver faver
able attention. It is new being sampled
and is turning out very well, being clean,
dark, silky and free from damage of any
kind. Great things are expected of it when
it comes into manufacturing shape.
Already many packings of it have changed
hands, a fair proportion of it being in the
hands et cigarmakers.
The new crop is being rapidly out and
housed. It is of all qualities, geed, bad
and indifferent ; big and little ; clean and
foxy ; sound and bail-cut. Seme farmers
beast that they never bad a better crops ;
ethers admit they never had a worse.
Confessedly, the summer has been tee wet
and cold te produce a first class crop. The
het weather of tbe past few days may
make seme amends as far as the late
planted lets are concerned.

AYKlt'S PILLS have kept my system regular
and my head clear, and benefitted me mere
