A highly sensational incident of the
Bearer savings bank failure en Thursday
has come te light. Seme time age a Mrs.
Ubalte, the widow of one of the soldiers of
the famous Light ungaee, sela some e:
her property and deposited $700 with the
bank. On Thursday morning Mrs. Ubalte
heard some rumors te the effect that the
institution was net solvent, and would
probably suspend in a day or two. She ii
a very energetics woman, and has a prettj
fair knowledge of business affairs, and she
determined te act promptly.
Accordingly she went at once te tb
bank, where she found William MeCreery.
the president- She was accompanied by
her son, who is about twenty-one years ni
age, and they made a demand for the
meney. Mr. MeCeery said that the bank
had failed and that the failure would be
announced the next day. Owing te this,
ha told her that he could net pay ber the
money, but said she nmxt take ber chance
with the ether creditors and get the same
p.opertion that they did.
This ezeited Mrs. Ubalte very much,
and turning te her son she told him te go
te the house and get a pistol. She gave
ber instructions in sueh a low tone that
Mr. McCreery did net hear what she said
and be did net suspect anything until the
young man returned with a Derringer,
whieh he banded te bis mother. She
promptly cocked it, and pointing it at Mr.
McCreery abe reiterated her demand fei
the money, sayiuc she would sheet him il
he did net comply.
Mr. McCreery tried te appease Mrs.
Ubalte, but she would net listen te him,
and her son intimated that be was fully
prepared te back up his mother's claims.
The result was that Mr. McCreery went
te the safe where he kept his greenbacks,
counted out the $700 and gave it te the
widow. She received it without a word
and handed it and the pistol te her son
and then, in true feminine fashion, fainted
dead away upon the bank fleer.
The boy assisted bis mother home after
she revived, but she was very much pros
trated by the exciting events of the morn
ing. The affair was kept very quiet, but
it leaked out. The liabilities of the bank
are net mere than $30,000, and it is stated
en geed authority that every dollar of this
will be paid.

Commercial matters.
The annual report of the beard of trade
of Cincinnati shows that the product el
the manufactures of that city, during the
last year, amounted in value te $134,572,
00$, an excess of $8,000,000 compared with
th3 produet of the preceding year.
The experts of petroleum for the twelve
months which ended June 30th last,
amounted in value te $44,913,079, against
$51,232,706 for the 12 months which ended
June 30, 1882.
The first national bank of Olpmpia, W.
T., and the first national bank of East
Fertand, Oregon, have been authorized te
begin business, each with a capital of
$50,000.
A Uellapaea strike.
Thestiike of the Pittsburg, Cincinnati
and St. Leuis railway telegraph operators
collapsed en Saturday morning as sud
denly as it began, all but ten of tbem re
turning te work. It is reported that
during Friday night seventy-one telegraph
lines were broken or grounded around
New Yerk eity, that fifteen wires were
cut or rendered useless near Pittsburg,
and that several wires were also cut near
Chioage and St. Leuis. The striking tele
graphers deny that they are responsible
for this.
