LAB0B MATTERS.
STATE OF THE TJELKGBAFH STKIKB.
The Western union Claiming te b A Die te
Held Out Tbe Cigar Makers'
Strike.
Chicago, 111., Aug. 4. There was little
change in the telegraph situation last
night. Superintendent Dewry says he has
consulted with railroad managers, and is
prepared for anything the operative may
de by calling eat tbe telegraphers.
jjlemecrs el the brotherhood hint that
the operators who took the place of the
strikers are dissatisfied, and that a large
number of them have joined the brother
heed, but are kept at work. A large
enough force inside is obtained te cripple
the company by leaving in a body.
A Question et Endurance.
New Yerk, Aug. 4. The Times says :
"The strike new seems te have settled
down te a qnestien of endurance, the
Western Union managers having seeming
ly determined te starve the men out rather
than yield te the brotherhood. Mr. Gould
outlined this plan in his statement te a
friend while talking of the sitnatien. He
said the present strike was but a skirmish
line in the fight which has been projected
by the Knights of Laber, of which the
brotherhood is a branch. Every cor
poration, or firm, or individual that
employs large' numbers of men is
interested in seeing this movement
defeated, for they knew that its success
means tbe success of the Knights of
Laber. Owinz te the great interests
involved the 'Western Union cannot and
will net give in, no matter what our less
is or te what inconvenience the publie is
put."
Tbe Kaiireac company Kasy.
The announcement that tbe Brother
hood of Telegraphers would serve a bill of
grievances te-day upon the Delaware,
Lackawanna and Western railroad
company in behalf of the railroad opera
tors iu the employ of that line did net
appear te cause much apprehension in the
company's cilice. Ne committee of broth breth broth
erheod made its appearance, how hew how
ever, and operators haggiven no
indication of dissatisfaction. The effi
cers of the company say they have a
contract tq take Western Union commer
cial business aud any refusal en part of
operators te transact such business would
meet with prompt dismissal from the ser
vice. Business is reported as moving
smoothly at the Western Union office here.
Tbe Cigatmakers' Mrike.
New Yerk, Aug. 4. The troubles be
tween the cigar manufacturers and their
empleyes seem likely te break out afresh.
Te-day the progressive union men
employed in Ottcnberg's shop quit
work because their employer engaged
teu men belonging te the international
union. This action of the Ottenberg men
is net countenanced by the employers of
the ether manufacturers, as under the
late agreement the latter were te employ
men from either union.
Claiming O'Donnell as Ills llretber.
Wasuingten, D. C, Aug. 4. The
Republican published an interview with
an Irishmau named Cernelius O'Donnell,
who claims te be a brother of thu O'Don

er left Chicaee for New Yerk, where he
took the steamer Alaska, in November
last, telling him he wa3 going "te help
the suffering people." About two months
age he received a cablegram from his
brother, announcing that lie was going te
leave for Seuth Africa with his wife te
settle there. He says his brother "was
always a wild, unmanagcble sort of a fol fel
low." Clmrced with Conspiracy.
Philadelphia, Aug. 4. Jeseph J.

William Hollevan were arrested te day

General Charles F.Rebbins, general in

popular with the men of that command.
The sergeant was taking one of the pri

" Yes, I saw it was Charley Bobbins ;

The waiters at the regimental mess had

Tbe Croaa-Eyed Man's Revenge.
Hill Nye.
Over in St.Paul I met a man with eyes of
cadet blue and a terra cotta nose. His eyes
were net only peculiar in shape, but while
one seemed te constantly probe the future
the ether was apparently ransacking the
dreamy past. While one rambled along
the glorious possibilities of the remete, yet
golden ultimately, the ether sought the
sembre depths of the previously.
He told me that years age he had a mild
case of strabismus, and that both eyes
seemed te glare down his nose until he
get restless and bad them operated ou.
These were the days when they used te
fasten a crooked hoelc under the internal
rectus and cut it a little with a pair of
optical sheep shears. The effect of this
coarse was te allow the eye te drift back
te a direct line, but this man fell into the
hands of a drunken surgeon, who cut the
muscle tee much, and thereby weakened
it se that it gradually swung past the
point it ought te have stepped at, and he
saw with horror that his eye wa3 going te
turn out and protrude, as it were, se that
a man could hang his hat en it. The ether
followed suit, and the two orbs that had
for years looked along the bxidge of the
terra cotta nose gradually separated, and
while one looked toward next Christmas
with anticipations tbe ether loved te linger
ever the remembrances of last fall.
This thing continued till he had te peer
into the future with his off eye closed and
vice versa.
It is needless te say that Le hungered
for the bleed of that physician and sur
geon. He tried te lay vielent hands en
him and wipe up the ground with him,
and wear him out across a telegraph pole.
But the authorities always proventei the
administration of such swift and awfnl
justice.
Time passed ou till ene night the abnor
mally wall eyed mm loosened a beard in
the sidewalk np town se that the physician
and surgeon caught his feet in it and
caused an oblique fracture of the scapula,
pied his dura mater, busted his cornucopia
and wrecked his sarabbcilum.
Perhaps I am in error as te some of
these medical terms and their orthography
but that is about the way the man with
the divergent orbs told it te me.
The physician and surgeon was quite a
ruin. He had te wear clapboards en him
self for months, and there were ether
doctors and laudable pus and threatened
gangrene and doctors.' bills, with the cem
etery looming up in the near future. Day
after day he took his own anti febrile
drinks and rammed his busted system full
of iron and strychnine and beef tea and
dever's powders and hyperdermic squirt
nntil he wished he could die, but death
would net come. II e pawed the air and
howled. They fed him his own nnxvemica,
tincture of rhubarb and phosphates and
gruel, and brought him back te life with a
crooked cellar hone, and a shattered
shoulder blade and a leek of wee.
Then he sued the town for $50,000 dam
ages because the sidewalk was imperfect,
and the wild eyed man with the inflamed
nose get en the jury.
I will net explain hew it was done, but
there was a verdict for defendant with
costs en the Esculapian wreck. The man
with the crooked vision is net handsome,
but he is very happy. He says the mills
of the gods grind slowly, but they pulver
ize rni'ldling fine.

the extravagances of lawless persons,
