FRIDAY FVENING, AUG. 3, 1888,
TO M VHILDBBM (IN FUTUKO.)
A BKVKST.
Sweet little lass -with raven hair hair
Ne, golden brown I'll have It rather
And eyes el bine, complexion lair ;
I'll have It se, I am your lather.
At first you'll be like ether girls ;
Sweet infant, launched upon life's channel.
All fist and feet and fluffy curls.
All seething syrup, lace and flannel.
Then, darling, for a year or two
Your cunning ways will make us merry.
Then you will grew (girls always de)
Tall, angular, affected very-
And you, my son, have naught te dread ;
Yeu will de handsome like your f ithcr
With massive, detie like, curly head.
You'll leek at first top-heavy rather.
You'll be a nuisance till you're ten,
Jly that time I'll be cress and forty,
A little gray, dyspeptic; then
I'll whip you eftcner when naughty.
I'll send you seen away te school,
And afterward you'll go te college.
And then you'll think (It Is the rule)
That you have drained the cup of knowledge
You'll smoke, et course, your cigarette ;
You'll go, of course, te all the races;
You'll lese, et course, whene'er you bet
In shett, have all the manly graces.
You'll till In love a score et times.
You'll be an athlete, boxer, fencer ;
You'll even take te writing rhymes.
Perhaps you'll take te reading Spencer.
Quite early you'll begin te show
Seme gleams of the Immortal Are
That burns within. It must be se.
Fer, happy boy, I am your sire.
Perhaps (what horrid thought Is this !
Hew could my massive brain conceive It ".)
Lifr's greatest prizes you may ml s ;
Great heavens, no ! I can't believe II.
Yeu both, perhaps, will be the same
As ether folk, as wise, a silly :
You'll keep your lingers from a flame
And cover up when it Is chilly.
You'll wreck your lives as ethers de.
Your taul ts te all but me appient,
And I. perhaps, like ethers tee.
Will be a blind and doting parent.
Ne. no, my children, it can't be.
Your genius must make nature pliant;
Your mill Is, my children, came trem me
Frem me in Intellect :i giant.
My fair-hatred maid, my blue-eyed boy.
Yeu 'It much resemble eacii the ether
Your lather's pilde, your mother's joy ;
Uut. y the way, who is your mother f
Tell me, my son, who U your ma ?
Yeu ought te knew : I prythee show her.
Aly daughter, tell your anxious pa ;
Come, children, answ er, de I knew her V
hhe's pretty and, et course, she'- go d,
Hut has hei lather bends In plenty 1
And will she love me as she should 1
And, tell me, is bliu under twenty ?
shall we be married In a church ?
Will 1 be awknard, stupid, Hunted V
Will "papa" leave in in the lurch ?
1'ray tell me this, I'm nilhei worried.
Confound It, 'Us a burning shame !
Can you net tell what she's doing,
Ner wheie she lives, nor what's her name?
Then hew can I bcyin my wooing ?
Came, hurry up delay is cr.iue !
You're compromising ine, I'll show you ;
Fer you are growing all this time.
And yet your own mamma don't knew you.

Schmidt was recently released from

hour later he was scen in the pewder mill
