President Arthur Open the Exposition Amid 3refet Kntnualaeui. Wednesday was a general public holiday at Louisville, there being no bueinebb whatever. With the first streak of day light crowds of people began pouring into the city from every point of the compass Trains were doubled np, and by 0 o'clock the main streets were se full that it was difficult te pass along the sidewalks. The president rested well during the night and was ready by 11 o'clock next morning te take bis part in the exercises of the day The presidential party left the Gait house in carriages, escorted by a body of police and local military, and moved by the most direct route te the exposition building. Their way was a perfect ovation the entire distance, the thousands of people yelling themselves hearse as their distinguished visitor passed. The great main building, capable of holding 20,000 people, was filled completely and the crowd was tee thick for comfort. President Dupent, of the exposition, welcomed the president in a speech. President Arthur gracefully responded and concluded by start:ng the vast ma chinery and pronouncing the exposition open. The crowd was wild with enthusi asm. The presidential party leaves for Chicago te-night. The managers of the exposition were most agreeably surprised at the uuloekcd for crowds en the first dav. During the night attractions were of an unusual character. The vast building and its annexes, the art gallery aud park were illuminated by thousands of electric lights, miking a brilliant spectacle. Secretary Lincoln telegraphs from Louisville that a change has been made in President Arthur's plans, by which he will net reach Chicago until te-morrow night. This will necessitate a postpone ment of all arrangements for his receptien until ha returns from the West. The pirty will loavefortha Yellowstone ever the Northwestern read at neon en Friday. A DUKE. TO THE UKAI M. The Meetlt'gefa lreirmle atil miKnuitrl Marshal. At the colored village of Brooklyn, in the American bottom opposite St. Leuis,:, frightful duel took place midi.ight Wed nesflay between City Marshal IleuiyGreeu and nn ex convict desperado named Jouce. The latter, with a companion, had been engaged U day in an endeavor te hunt down HLd kill a stranger who was sus pected of being a detective fiem Chicago, looking for some of the hard characters who often seek abiding place in Brooklyn, and kuewing that his men were around with shotguns aud small arms, Green supplied himself with these weapeus aud started in pursuit. He met Jenes alnut ra:dni-j;ht,anl after p Fhert parlev opened en, him with both bar rels of his shotgun. The buckshot canied away thocntiie flesh from lctt upper arm. The men then closed, aud in the struggle Jenes get the first shot, Feuding a bullet from his revolver into the officer's groin. Green followed with a shot which pas Bed though the desperado's body. The men were tbm separated and canied oil. Each lias since died. Green linger ing until Wednesday morning and Jenes until Wednesday afternoon. Jenes was one of the most desperate men in the American bottom, had shot several people and served two teims in the pen itentiary. Ureek Wittl Stinklngs. The ' jEdipus" of Sophocles, the Greek tragedy which Harvard students icteu two jeais aie, has just been put en the stage of the theatre Fiaucaise in French. Miss Ober reproduced the Harvard per formance in our theatres with all except the principal rele translated into English. She has seen the 1'aiis performance, and says of it : "There is a great deal el con servatism at the Francaibe, aud the double stage, the cheruses.and a geed deal of the music were suppressed, se that the Greek tragedy might resemble as much as pessi ble au ordinary French drama. The chorus is reduced te a let of mute supeniuiuera ries and two young girls, who alternately recite thestrephies which ought te be sung by a full chorus. Notwithstanding all the resources which the French may liAve for obtaining correct models, ours were certainly mere graceful in clinging dra pery as well as mere effective in dramatic expression. According te the knowledge we have in America of Greek history, there were no stockings or sleeves worn, and with us only bare arms, legs and feet were seen upon the stage. But here I saw characters wearing shoes, sandals, even beets, some with long sleeves, and some with stockings, ethers with bare arms and bare feet, just as they seemed te prefer. The costumes wcre of all colors and of many textures, aud the draperies seemed te have been lest sight of en tirely." The acting, however, was fiue. Poisoned by Drinking ueer Drcga. At Shenandoah Austin Jenes, a boy of ten years, was poisoned Wednesday morn ing by drinking the dregs of a beer keg. The keg was lying in a gutter in freut of a saloon and he poured the beer left iu it into a tiu cup aud drank it. Geiug home he was seized with terrible pains. His mother gave him a strong emetic and thus somewhat relieved him. He is still in a critical condition. Seme time age the burgess made a raid en these- barrels in gutters for a similar cause. iMncevering a Fetrilinri Head. Mr. Martin McKay, of Mill Village, ex cavated a petrified head from a stone quarry en VVednesday. It is believed te be the head of a youth. The features are well drfined as though carveu in the block. The savans of the county will make an examination. fffEUIAL NOTICES. " Mether Mraa'i IV or in Syrup."
